The right way is grab a Bug Net and wait for the Fairies rarely spawn at nighttime at the Fairy Log. And you can craft Fairy in a Bottle.

I might be wrong, but if a fairy follows you, that means that fairy is trying to lead you to a nearby treasure chest. In hard mode, you can also find some fairies in hallow biome, but those would always fly far away from you, you can use the bug net to catch them and craft a fairy in a bottle by hand, if you have a bottle in your inventory. Hope it help! ♡

I believe pixies are the enemies that fly around with yellow glowing appearance in the hallow biome. Faries, on the other hand, are the npc that have pink, blue, green color appearance and can lead you to treasure chests or those that spawn from a fallen log. Sorry for my bad English!
