Rewatching Ted Lasso now and just started thinking. In season 3 episode 6, what if Ted somehow drank the tea Coach Beard made and that’s how he started to hallucinate and came up with the idea of total football?

  • Coach Beard later tells him the tea was bunk, confirmed by Kenneth the bus driver.

It’s such a wonderful demonstration of the power of ‘BELIEVE’

Ted thinks he’s under the influence of an entheogenic and has an experience while it is all him, sober

My theory is Ted actually felt the full effect of the tea, while Beard and Kenneth have built up a much higher tolerance.

I personally think Beard lied to him to make Ted feel he didn’t miss out. Then when he found out later, it was too late and beard just went with it.

This is not really how mushrooms work, unless Beard had done mushrooms the day before.

  • Watch it again.

  • Is this a joke I’m not getting?

  • Media literacy devil truly is all-powerful

  • You didn't pay a ton of attention, did you?

    Wait, did I miss something?

He did drink the tea. They showed it. He thought that's why he was hallucinating, but it was just a placebo since Beard said the mushrooms were a dud batch.

    It was “BBQ Sauce induced.”

  • I like to think it was a “dud batch” for beard, a seasoned vet of tripping. But even a trace amount left in the tea could have made Ted feeling prettttttyyy weird.

  • The nerd in me loves this because there is something called The Proust Phenomenon named after Marcel Proust's novel In Search of Lost Time where the taste of a madeleine cake dipped in tea suddenly transports the narrator back to his childhood.

We see that Ted actually drinks the tea before he leaves the hotel. He's totally fine and in a good headspace the entire evening until arriving at Yankee Doodle Burger Barn. Sits down in the Chicago section and is watching an old Bulls basketball game that we know he's seen before as he says he remembers watching it with his dad.

We see a little pre-emptive tease that he's tripping when he sees Nate as one of the waiters but I think this is a red herring. Ted is in a compromised mental state lately, Not sure what to do with the team, not sure why he's even there. He's in a low point mentally so seeing that i think had more to do with his mental state than the supposed drug trip.

Now When the waitress brings him the Arthur Bryant Barbecue sauce, That's his favourite as we learned in Season 1 episode 2. He takes a bite then is immediately transported into his own psyche with the Ture Spirit of Adventure that then discusses triangles and the Bull Triangle defense.

The thing is , Ted already knew about this stuff, While he might not know about "soccer" He knows American sports. I think the taste of the barbecue sauce while his in this low point mentally thrust him into one of these Proust Phenomenon's where he was able to connect the dots for a tactic he already knew of but had never considered applying to "soccer" Because then, just after a minute of this "trip" he's back but wanting to write down his inspiration. We also get a hint in the next episode that this was the case when beard points out during the Total Football presentation that coach " dreamed up in a barbecue sauce related hallucination"

Because this is also Ted Lasso we are talking about here, It was never the drugs..

    It was...

    In fact...

    Barbecue Sauce

I beg to differ… I believe the tea affected him to some degree. As much as someone loves BBQ sauce .. it doesn’t cause auditory and visual hallucinations.

  • I think that is what happened, but I’m not sure since it was a ‘dud batch’.

  • I think someone may have gotten into Jane’s tea…

  • I always interpreted the episode as the tea ended up being junk and gave him some placebo effect, but then he had the BBQ sauce at the American restaurant which is what sent him on his vision quest where he reinvents total team football. BBQ sauce > shrooms

  • I spent 2 weeks in Amsterdam and was used to have a space cake almost every day. Mostly From the bulldog , a reputable place The trip on the first day was heavy. But my body got used to it , so by the last day I could barely feel it. Meanwhile my wife who only got courageous in the last couple of days felt the trip heavily. So I assume that’s what happened to Ted.

  • There’s no way that he wasn’t high when hallucinating at the restaurant. No way.

  • That is what happened.

  • “What if” he drank it? He did drink it. You’ve seen it twice and didn’t notice that?
