Hi,
I got two taxidermy bats for Christmas.
They have live mites on them and i would like to know how to get rid of them without damaging the taxidermy.
P.S. i am aware taxidermy bats are unethical but they were a gift and found in a vintage store.
Thank you
Immediately freeze them. Then you can treat them with permethrin or use a product like mothballs to keep them away. Chances are they are not properly preserved.
how do i properly preserve them after? and do i freeze them in the frame or do i have to take them out
You can leave them in the frame. Proper preservation is done when they are prepped and framed, trying to do it now would likely ruin them.
Put into a garbage bag, tie it tight, and into the freezer for a week or two. If you have other pieces of taxidermy they will need to be frozen too.
thank you !
Aren't those spider mites and don't they feed on plant material? What are they eating from the bat?
That bat probably wasn’t well preserved
But what are they eating?
If it wasn’t well preserved there would still be biological matter for them to munch on. I’m under the impression bats are just dried out and aren’t literally taxidermied so that bat still had organs
