Girlfriend’s family built a new house and her step dad decided to hang the TV like this. I mean come on; THAT THING IS TOUCHIN THE DAMN CEILING. I can’t go over to their house without this ruining my day. Brought it up at thanksgiving before the football game and ruined the evening because it started an argument between everyone. It’s gotten to a point where I’m about to break in one night and move it down while they sleep. Need some advice.

We bought a newly built house a few months ago. It's literally impossible to find a home without a spot for the TV above the fireplace, so idiotic. The house we bought actually has two fireplaces, and both have plug-ins for TV. I told my wife that she'll need to find art work for that area, the 85" went on the wall at an appropriate height.
That’s exactly what I did. I covered up the power sockets and just to make double sure put artwork over the fireplace

I hate fireplaces. My home has two and my parents insisted on putting a TV as high as possible over one because my mum thought it looked better. It ended up being super impractical. Said TV has since been moved. Still very high up though, annoyingly. The other fireplace also has the TV above it, but it’s thankfully not as high and is much more comfortable (still wayyyyyy too high though)

You'd have to find another placement for it. You can't drop it down to the mantle, too hot. The only spot that's workable is putting the base on the top of the mantle but then all those bitchin decorations go away. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

If you mount your TV above the mantel, mount the soundbar above the TV.
The bottom of the TV should be only a few inches above the mantel. The little nativity figurine set can go somewhere else.
