I just went down a rabbit hole and this is actually called needle play. It seems to be more about this temporary display/experience while the needles are in (for various different reasons) than scarification, though it can also leave scars.
No its not, this is just piercing play, the needles are put in for a photo and then taken out again. There may be some scars left over depending on the skill of the piercer and how long they were left in but its not meant to be permanent whereas scarification is
Is this really how it’s done? I can’t imagine those little needles making much of a scar. I thought scarification literally involved deep cuts on the skin.
Generally- it involves more direct branding or carving flesh out to make the designs,
though I could see repeatedly doing it this way resulting in precise lines of dots, or if done poorly, causing the pierced sections to get infected and fall off- either way the design is thus outlined with scars of one size or another.
This is called needle play, not scarification like people are saying. While it can leave scars, it’s more about the experience/display/photographing it while the needles are in. Can be for art, kinks, stress relief, all kinds of reasons.
not really my bag cause i'm a keloid-y mofo and have a history of SH, but i gotta say scarification is fascinating to me and it's nothing new, humans have been decorating their bodies by doing weird shit FOREVER.
This is fascinating! I don’t have skin that scars in this particular way except for one self harm scar on my arm from when I was a teenager that’s still very dimensional even like twenty five years later 🤔. I wonder if it’s because that one was caused by repeated abrasion with something not particularly sharp rather than just a regular cut…
yanno, i have some SH scars from my teenage years made the same way and can confirm they are my most 3-D ones. It was so long ago and so many years of therapy ago that it's nothing to me, but i forget about them and when i drink alcohol they glow BRIGHT RED so everyone around me becomes uncomfortable lmao
I hate this more than anything else I’ve seen in this sub
Another "3D tattoo", it's even worse
3D tattoo? It's just a super infected tattoo
You got it Holmes
Hence the quotation marks
That is so gross.
Acupuncture has gotten crazy! 😉
Yeah, but she's gonna make some therapist rich.
What’s this called and what’s it look like after

this is even more mindboggling to me but i guess it's like those temporary corset piercings
Yeah those corset pierces are a form of piercing play. I dont get it myself either but to each their own
It’s more for just style then anything like hey look at this then take it out
It's needle-play.

I hate looking at it, bit i kinda wanna touch it...
I wanna strum the needles and see if it sounds like a mini harpsichord
Death Magnetic fan I guess
Wow, it's been ages since I've seen something actually cool and original here. Def not my thing, but I love the technique.
It’s gruesome and gross but def impressive
It’s very r/atbge
This reminds of when I put safety pins underneath the first layer of skin on my finger as a kid, but obviously so much worse.
Method def fits the art
What the actual fuck
For someone who's gotten used to body horror, this still somehow makes my skin crawl.
Jesus CHRIST. It’s awesome but also eugh
That looks like that would itch for DAYS 😭
I wanna tear my skin off
I don’t like this at all
This is pinhead's version of p***
WTF
What a terrible day to have eyes
Looks a little crooked
But why would anyone do that ?
same reason people do tattoos

EDIT: noticed others in the comments clarifying this isn't scarification so i stand corrected!
“Keloid-y mofo” is amazing 😂! No wonder I can never get off of Reddit and go do all my stupid adult responsibilities!
haha being prone to keloid scars makes getting piercings and tattoos a bit dicey but so far none of the scars have gotten too outrageous
a few of my more packed-in tats (black or full areas of color) got a bit lumpy/ridgey but settled down over the years, thankfully

Oh my god, human bodies are so weird and fascinating! And they do not give a single shit about who might be embarrassed by what they’re gonna do 😂!
Dedication to the church! She's so dedicated she can look down at her arm and see the symbol of our Lord And Saviour whenever she wants. Praise be 🙏🙏🙏
I mean I think it’s kinda cool
I do too. It might not be something I would do but I can see the appeal as making art or expression
It's so weird that people react so strongly to this, but are perfectly okay with tattoos.

As much fun as sticking needles in my body sounds, I think I'll leave this one off the bucket list.
This is really beautiful, but I would’ve passed out. I’m not scared of needles, but yeah, this would’ve put me out.
I genuinely almost threw up
驷马难追 BING CHILLING.
How about fuck no!

So wild! Imagine how careful you need to be to keep from snagging it.
Good reminder i need to climb into a coffin in where winds meet
Why is it upside down?
“Could it be…. satan?”
-church lady
This comment has given me the energy and hope to move on with my day - thanks! 🤣
OG’s remember.
Make sure she’s upside down all yhe time
Because sticking multiple needles in your arm isn't edgy enough, and most people under 60 can't pull off a fedora.
So this is scarification, it produces some of the most pretty skin artworks but I exponentially get more nauseous the more I think about ut.
