As a bicycle commuter I spend a lot of time in the “door zone” and I know how dangerous it can be. As a driver, you don’t want a cyclist to hit your open car door. They will damn near take your door off.
If more drivers used The Dutch Reach we would all be a lot safer.
Dutchie chiming in; we actually get taught this, but the image is missing a crucial part. With your closest hand you hold the grip in case there’s wind that could blow your door open.
Do other countries not teach you how to safely open a car door?
That’s cool! I’m from the US, grew up in New York State. I wasn’t in the city, but rather Long Island. Basically middle-upper middle class suburbia.
I got a permit to drive with either parent in the car at 16, a restricted license for daytime & work/school driving at 17, and my full license at 18.
Overall the general feeling among most of my peers growing up growing up was that my DMV test was something that would suck, but I only had to “deal with it” once. In school we all made fun of the mandatory drivers safety courses. Yeah yeah everybody knows not to drive drunk & whatnot, but all this other safety stuff? I hated it at the time.
So no, we never bothered to learn the proper way to open a car door. Tbh I would’ve made fun of you 10 years ago when I was a teenager if you tried teaching me this. I’m older & (maybe) wiser now, so I find this cool today. But growing up in my part of the country, nobody gave a shit about safety. (Not defending this, just wanna share my experience)
Kids will be kids! That part is the same here, you do a driving exam and a lot of things you just remember for the test. But I do think they’re a lot stricter here, with a theoretical part (that you really have to study for) and 2 practical exams. You have to know so much, about tires, correct baby seat placement, max length and air pressure in trailers, etc. It’s impossible to remember all of it after, but stuff like opening doors you have to do correctly during your lessons so that becomes muscle memory.
I saw a kid walking on the side of the street on tiktok the other day and while staring at their phone almost walked straight into traffic in a dead spot that the incoming cars couldn't see. Their friend stopped them and the kid on tiktok turned around and started yelling at their friend for annoying her.
We live in a world where attention spans are cooked.
I don’t do this, but when i open my car door i always only open it by an inch and look in behind/in the mirror for 2-3 seconds. After that if it’s clear both ways i fling the door open without a care.
What an asshole, i was hit by a door while cycling when I was a kid. It’s now one of the thing that anger me the most. And here, it almost killed somebody

I see a two way road and a motorcycle driving outside of it, am I wrong? There's a white band indicating the end, yellow is the center line I guess (different in my country). In this case the person opening the door is absolutely not in the wrong as there's no way something fast comes there if they respect the law.
Small bikes often think they can do whatever they want because they can do it.
I have come across so many morons opening their car doors whilst parked on a busy road with moving traffic. They don’t bother checking their mirrors and open the door fully. Bunch of inconsiderate fuckwits.
There's a video of this happening where the guy wasn't so lucky... Head crushed flat with brain squirted all over the road.
I would not recommend looking it up.

Car driver looks at the bike on the ground as if, "weird, someone left their bike here".
Average motorist awareness...

You're not irrational at all in this case. I don't drive, but I'm always extra careful opening a door beside the traffic.
There is a safer way to open the car door when parked on the street.
It’s called The Dutch Reach and it should be included in drivers education classes everywhere.

Or just look at your side-view mirror
This just seems like common sense to me. Why would anyone open that door in any other way? Good that it’s being taught I suppose
Because people are morons who only think about themselves. As a cyclist, I've avoided MANY doors opening right in front of me.
Safety regulations are written in blood 🤷.
While it seems like common sense to us I think you are greatly underestimating the average person's IQ or their attention spans.
To quote George Carlin: "Think about how stupid the average person is, then remember that half of people are stupider than that."

Quite right

Wait, this is a named technique? I’ve just been doing this ever since I’ve started driving
Here in PH where every street is dense I employ what's called "looking at my side mirror"
What an asshole, i was hit by a door while cycling when I was a kid. It’s now one of the thing that anger me the most. And here, it almost killed somebody
She Could have at least looked first ..
You should punch your screen about it.
Seems rational to me.

Lucky it wasn’t a long nose truck or buddy might have not even seen him
"lucky" this type of very dangerous truck is only use in very few places
Definitaly needs a bike sticker on the road to make it safe again.
I've seen 'definitely' misspelled often, but this is the first time I've seen someone fit 'Italy' into it.
😅
Zero situational fucking awareness. Check mirrors before opening the door, how fucking hard is that?
Someone: “Hey, Death!”
Death: “What! I’m busy. Don’t distract me. AW COME ON. SEE?! SEE WHAT YOU DID? DAMMIT!”
There's a video of this happening where the guy wasn't so lucky... Head crushed flat with brain squirted all over the road.

I've probably already seen it. It doesn't bother me.
BUT DID YOU DIE?
Sadly yes…but I LIVED!
If only there was some sort of device that would let you look to look to if there was anything coming
Reminder to ALWAYS just glance for a second to check for cyclists. I always check, I’ve been the one on a bike hit before.
One of a million reasons you'll never catch me riding a bike in a city.
Dude just camping underneath the rig. Do you live under there now? MOVE!
Probably taking a second to figure out if he still has legs.
I like how she’s throws her phone back into her car before going to check on him
It's like she's trying to get behind cover to avoid whatever hit that random dude on the bike lmao. She looks lost.
😂😂 seriously the head duck and body language
Priorities...
Even if he ran over him that truck only weighs a few thousands pounds.
And that is why lane splitting should be forbidden.
Yeah on account of fuckwit car drivers who couldn’t be bothered to look before opening their door.
I mean this could just have easily been a cyclist
Don't split lanes
I would like to know, from your perspective, why you think that.
I really wish they would answer this. But they won't.
A warped sense of “fairness”
