My father is mixed creole and indonesian surinamese, I’ve been wanting to learn more about that side of my family and culture. I’m not sure how many other Surinamese people there are in Australia, but reconnecting with that part of my heritage feels important to me. Sadly flights are incredibly costly and i dont have any connections with relatives there. Would love to know if there is any sort of diaspora or community in australia?
I am also curious to know about Surinamese Australians kinda😆
Jairzinho Rozenstruik got a crazy reception when he fought Tai Tuivasa, there’s a big community in Perth for sure
yeah i saw haha, i tried to see if i could find a single surinamese resturaunt or some indicator of a community to no avail :( even if so im in melbourne and perth is the complete opposite side of australia
Good luck! No roti is crazy, they’re missing out.
I’m not Australian, but I spent a year there on a working holiday visa many years ago and loved it over there!
People (both fellow backpackers and locals) were often very curious about my background when they saw me with my Indian looks combined with my Dutch accent/passport. And hardly anyone over there ever heard of Suriname except for the 1 or 2 people making the connection to the Dutch national football team and their players with a Surinamese background.
Honestly, I don’t know how many people with a Surinamese background live in Australia. I hope you will find them. This sub may be a good place to start off your search. Best of luck 🇸🇷🫶🏽🇦🇺
Your father is most likely part Javanese, so you could visit Java and learn some. That’s closer and cheaper than Suriname.
yeah! i have been to Ambon, the island where some of his relatives are. was another island occupied by the dutch and portugese. my dad was def more surinamese culturaly than indonesian - apart from his family all being buddhists
I have a cousin and her whole family living there, where are you in Australia? I'll doublecheck where they are at
im in Melbourne, Victoria!
They are in Gladstone, Queensland, is that far from you?
Oef, I just checked, different coasts right?
yeah... like going from paramaribo to caracas
I know of one, but don't know the person personally, a old colleague of mine once told me he had a daughter who lived in Australia.
