LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: ~$1500-3000, U.S.
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? - No, looking for new
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? -
  1. Performance
  2. Quality
  3. Battery life
  4. Form Factor
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? - Preferably not heavier than my current laptop which weighs 2.10 Kg (4.63 lbs). Could consider heavier if the performance is fantastic on the recommendation but I will be traveling with the laptop a few times in the year.
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. - Around 15.6" can be a bit bigger
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. - I will be using Unreal Engine 5, Adobe Suite, Spine, Rive on the laptop. I also plan on playing games like VALORANT, FFXIV, Baldur's Gate 3, Last of Us II.
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? - I will be playing games like VALORANT, FFXIV, Baldur's Gate 3, Last of Us II. Ideally want 144Hz+ refresh rate
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? - Reliable build quality, no need for webcam or touch screen / finger-print. My previous laptop is the ASUS G513 5900HX (15.6"), I'm looking for something better.
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
    • Hoping I can get a recommendation for a laptop that is fairly easy to maintain (cleaning dust, upgrading RAM, etc.)
    • My current laptop is the ASUS G513 5900HX (15.6"), but I have been having very little luck in fixing it and I've had it for 4 years+
  • I'm super open to hearing people's thoughts and recommendations. I don't think I can work with a PC tower at the moment since I will be visiting family often throughout the year and I will need to fly to do that. I work in game dev and am hoping to get a laptop that can make me feel ok about moving on from my ASUS G513 which I felt very attached to. Thank you in advance!
  • Would you ever for a smaller display?
How much heavier would you consider if you will get a great performing laptop with excellent heat management, built quality etc ?

I am open to a smaller display!
Anything above 5.5–6 lb might be too heavy, but send me any of your recommendations even if they are heavier/smaller, I'd love to know what you'd recommend!

I was thinking the Asus G14 and Lenovo Legion 7i.

Thank you! Another person in this subreddit, Subhash94, also recommended Lenovo Legion 7i as well, their comment doesn't show on here for some reason though.

I'll definitely look into the Lenovo laptop you mentioned!

Yeh, the Legion 7i is an excellent pick.. I would be sure to go for one of the current configs with a 5070 Ti or 5080 graphics card. The one that user recommended has a 4080 card,,,

  • It's my first time hearing of GIGABYTE AERO, thanks for bringing it up! I'll take a look at it

  • Hello,

Check out this model. It has some great specs.

    RTX 5080 + AMD Ryzen R9-9955HX.

A fantastic 300Hz screen with QHD+ resolution and 100% color coverage. What sets it apart is that it also has a liquid cooling system, which can be detached, allowing you to use the laptop without it.

  • Since you are going to need powerful CPU and GPU for game development, And you are going to run kinda heavy games, I would recommend this Lenovo Legion Pro 7i because of the following:

    Specs:

    • Screen: 16" 2.5K WQXGA
    • CPU: Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX
    • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080
    • Ram: 64GB RAM
    • Storage: 2TB SSD.

    Why I am recommending it:

    • Great heat management which is the main concern to have with most high end gaming laptops.
    • Premium build quality : Aluminum chassis provides a solid, premium feel and added durability.
    • Up to 5 hours of battery life, which is decent for a high-performance gaming laptop, allowing for moderate usage away from a power source.

    • Powerful GPU and CPU for Unreal Engine 5, Adobe Suite and can run your games on medium to high settings.

    • Has multiple ports .

    • High quality screen which is very good for editing.
