Depending on the laws, you'd still have to convince the court the panicked reaction was reasonable in the circumstances. It can't be "I saw them posing with a gun on their Facebook and assumed they had it on them when they got mad at me".

Plenty of US states have laws that say lethal violence is an acceptable reaction to being scared your life may be in danger 

And some have a very lenient interpretation of when it's reasonable to fear for your life.

I think people sometimes forget that there actually a lot of young people who are not all that online, and if you tried to explain a lot of these internet things to them they'd look at you like you're a freak. Exactly. We have the right to bear arms and we're presumed innocent until proven guilty, but also cops can shoot you for no reason (after breaking into your house) and justify it afterwards by saying you had a gun. 

I don't think cops almost ever deal with stalkers well, and they don't investigate pretty much any thefts from normal people either, whether it's a car or a phone or whatever, doesn't matter if you've got a LoJack or anything either, still not their problem.

As a non american: when someone is harassing you and possesses a weapon that can instantly end your life in one use, are you really expected to gamble that you'll survive the first shot before taking action?

Something very similar just happened in Metro Detroit.

There was a "road rage" incident where a car despite refusing to let an SUV merge into their lane, eventually got in front of them. They both wound up stuck as traffic at a stop light with the SUV directly in front of the car in the same right-most lane (incident happened here). The driver of the SUV gets out and approaches the car. The driver of the car maces the SUV driver. The passenger of the SUV gets out and brandishes a pistol while the driver that had gotten maced attempts to step in front of the car that was slowly angling toward the driver-side of the SUV. At that point the driver takes off once they have enough room and the passenger with a gun aims downrange and fires at the vehicle. Did I mention that same person with a gun was well into his 60s and proclaimed, "I can't see" at some point before drawing and discharging his firearm?

It's pretty clear to most people that while the car were being the typical jerks that didn't allow someone to merge, the people in the SUV were the aggressors, escalated the situation, and initiated physical intimidation. Not just that, but they recklessly discharged a firearm that could have easily killed innocent bystanders, all because his driver made themselves the aggressor twice.

Answer ultimately is, "It depends." The right to retreat in defense, or the duty to retreat, is given at a wider range than, "You can shoot a gun at someone after they have committed any violent act just because."

They'd need to be brandishing the weapon for a self defense claim to be viable.
