To this day, I have no clue how that scene could have actually worked. We learned that the upside down was created on the day Will went missing, so basically these lights couldn't have been positioned that way on the wall a few days after Will went missing. Moreover, that whole scene implies that Will would have had the guts to touch the letters R U N while the demo was just meters away before seconds before the demo created a gate to go after Joyce... If that's the case, then why didn't the demo go after Will instead? Please I need someone explaining me this scene so it could logically work. Also, that was a greaaaatt scene.
We learn that demo's don't blindly attack, they have "missions". Will was needed by Vecna so the demo knows they can't kill Will. We could also assume the demo had already abandoned Will to start the portal opening process while Will was spelling out RUN.
It's also a completely fictional sci-fi with logical holes left right and centre so maybe chill and enjoy rather than considering what makes sense in a world where portals to other dimensions are opened on a whim lmao.
In season 4 when Nancy, Steve, Eddie, and Robin get stuck in the upside down, they communicate with Dustin across dimensions via a Lite Brite. In the upside down, it appears as a swirling mass of red sparkly energy. So on Will's side he would see the red swirling energy, but he would have no idea which lights correspond to which letters. It's like they tried to fix the logic but only did it halfway.

Good points! There are a lot of little plot holes throughout the series especially at they started retconning things.
