I find that so many shows are getting lazy with their side characters, or more likely, cheap
A story feels so much more ALIVE when they show us recurring characters, even if they don't do much
Show us the cops that have been in every season, show us Dustin's mom on the phone saying she doesn't know where Dustin is, show us Max's mom in the hospital with Lucas briefly
The scenes don't progress the story but they add depth to the viewing experience
I donāt think they do it as much these days, but in the earlier days of Netflix stepping up as a genuine studio, they would sign actors to multi-project contracts. Actors wouldn't necessarily know at the time what those projects would be, but thats why a lot of actors tend to show up in multiple earlier Netflix projects. Ben Barnes is another one of these actors.
Is he the actor from the babysitter? Cuz that dude blew up on Instagram if I recall correctly and all of a sudden he started showing up in a bunch of comedies.
Idk but he's that dude in Smile that Rose talked to at the prison, he broke the chain by killing someone with a witness to see it and pass the Smile demon to them
Ugh officer callahan is my fav part of the show, i was looking to see him this season
Hope weāll get to see him in the next 3 eps or cameos for the finally
Officer Callahan is played by John Reynolds who has a pretty good selection of work.
If youāre interested in a more adult oriented mystery minus the sci fi elements of Stranger Things check out the series Search Party on HBO. It wrapped up a few years ago so you can binge the full series. A good movie to watch is Save Yourselves which is a sci fi/comedy. I like his work in both of those.
Iāve always found it hilarious that he ended up being one of the Netflix shows most favorite characters when his first appearance is him being a human trafficker
Iām assuming most of the police in Hawkins are handling very minor things, have gotten new jobs/retired or could have been transferred to a nearby town.
That's a spin off that Hoppers' deputies can star in, "Minor Things" where its just them handling shoplifting reports orhandling all the mundane calls while all the major events happen in the background.
Itād be funny if he shows up right before the final battle and is like āyāall.. there was this hole and I went in it and.. guys I think thereās like a whole other town underneath Hawkins, but like an evil town!!ā
Not really, his whole lifeās pretty much in Cali. Heās got shifts at Surfer Boy to take care of lmao. Still odd they hadnāt at least mentioned him.
Yeah, his story has been told. It would be nice if the last episode had a closing song/montage showing what all the characters are doing post-whatever conclusion occurs. Even if itās just him answering the phone at the pizza shop and continuing his life like normal
Yeah I was speculating on this, and I think it would make more sense if he got trapped in Hawkins after the end of season 4 when they went into lockdown. He was still there right? I'm guessing he wasn't available for the 4th season but man I wish they could have paid whatever he was asking
Nah, he was for sure available. I canāt remember but I believe I read somewhere he waited for a call but never got it. Also, yes. He was there in Hawkins in S4 right went things hit the fan but Iām guessing he left right before they initiated a lockdown.
I need Dustin to call Suzie for something and her to mention she's "been busy with her younger siblings a lot since Eden ran away to california with that surfer boy pizza guy" ā”
Full agree but I know there's a lot of ground to cover in only a few episodes so I'll take what I can get. But if they aren't at least mentioned I will be disappointed.
How has he not been quarantined like the rest of the town for being exposed to the dust? I guess he immediately skedaddled. Do you think he ran back to Utah for Suzieās sister?
Argyle was funny but honestly I'm glad he just went home. Stranger Things has been having a "too many characters" problem for a long time now, and trying to shoehorn in a plot for this random dude would have been too much.
At least not with these characters who can be considered side characters. The Duffers have said in the past that S5 will largely focus on the main cast and so far they've pretty much stuck to that (as in, there's no side stories so far. Every episode is about the main group)
And yet we have time for a weird amount of focus on Derek.
I'm being facetious, but I do think it harms the show. I think the best shows succeed by creating a specific sense of place, and a big part of that is recurring side-characters. I think Stranger Things has failed to create that sense with Hawkins because they change it up too much between seasons.
I knew someone was gonna argue Derek as a point. He's not a side character the way that some other characters are, he's a central plot device and everything you see with him still involves the main cast.
I mean heās probably still there, we just havenāt seen what the cops are up to yet. That being said, if he was smart he wouldāve left Hawkins for a new precinct or started retirement early somewhere warm and safe
I think thereās a decent chance that he and Callahan will both show up before the end of the season, although probably not in a very significant role.
Are you kiddinā me? Powell took one look at that gaping hole where Main Street used to be, chucked his hat and said āfuck this shit, Iām movinā to Terre Haute. At least there I know all the monsters are locked up.ā
Well, after setting Jason off to go create a mob, completely losing control over the situation and failing to stop the deaths of Patrick, Jason, and Fred and then having hell tear up the ground all over Hawkins on his watch, maybe he ended it
Reckon youāll see him again. He probably hasnāt seen Hopper since before the Battle of Starcourt so I imagine there will be an interaction between them and that other guy
I was thinking the same thing! Miss him and Callahan. Their scene chasing off Steve and his friends in S1 gets me every time: "Nuh-uh, little guys, come here!"
My guess is because they were small town cops there characters were probably harder to keep around and stay relevant and realistic now that the problem is so much bigger and they were never in on what happened to begin with.
For how long the wait was for season 5, it really does feel like a lot of loose ends are gonna be left unexplained. Maybe they get away with some of these side characters being MIA because they have plans for them in the future spinoff series though
After hopper ādiedā in S4 he got promoted to chief right? Bet you heās still in charge of the local police force but dunno what theyāre all up to with the military on site like that
Maybe he'll show up in the final fight with the other cops who now have nothing to do because of the military and scientist take over. Like, everyone will realize Hawkins in fucked and it'll be a a citizens rise up and help situation.
He couldn't even cut the mic from an eighteen-year-old boy whipping up a mob š I'm confused as to where he is, too, but let's not give him credit where he doesn't deserve it.

I actually miss his, Hopper and Callahan's dynamic back in season 1. Genuinely loved every scene they had together
Season 2 also had great scenes with them together, especially when investigating the pumpkin fields
The dynamic:
"Are you okay chief? You know it's just the Byers' boy"
"Yeah don't worry about it"
They had the library scene. That was good.
Really? The librarian?!
I hate his misogynistic ass
No hopper, but the two of them interrogating Nancy is a good scene.
Him and Callahan interrogating Max (and all the other kids) in season 4 was really funny.
The one with the mustache said something like We should'nt've started with her...she's kind of really mean.
That actor is also really funny in the show Search Party.
Coffee and contemplation šš¼
That's Powell; Callahan was the white guy who got his nose broken by Jonathan in the alley fight w/ Steve in S1
With the military controlling Hawkins, I'm assuming he's just sat at home with his feet up
They need to SHOW us
I find that so many shows are getting lazy with their side characters, or more likely, cheap

Idk but Netflix has this guy on speed dial heās in everything on theres

The hallmark model
More like old hollywood
Was gonna say yeah this practice is ancient
Is he the actor from the babysitter? Cuz that dude blew up on Instagram if I recall correctly and all of a sudden he started showing up in a bunch of comedies.
Idk but he's that dude in Smile that Rose talked to at the prison, he broke the chain by killing someone with a witness to see it and pass the Smile demon to them
Yes! I liked him and officer callahan
āOh little pigs, let officer Callahan innnnā this line was so beyond goofy and it makes me laugh every time lol
My partner found it really unnecessarily creepy! š
As she should
He actually!
āHonestly shouldnāt have gone with her first, sheās like kinda meanā gets me every time
Ugh officer callahan is my fav part of the show, i was looking to see him this season Hope weāll get to see him in the next 3 eps or cameos for the finally

Search Party is so good, I loved its escalating craziness.
I didnāt expect the series to go as long as it did but they did keep finding the craziness to explore lol
We need him and Callahan back for a cameo in S5.
Even if itās only one scene.
If not, thank you both for your performance. You will be missed and are both ST legends.
he went back to Hellās Kitchen where itās safe
Luke Cage gave this man the BLUES... š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
To be fair, that guy deserved to be thrown off the roof
Iāve always found it hilarious that he ended up being one of the Netflix shows most favorite characters when his first appearance is him being a human trafficker

I dunno... i dont think a show centered around cops called "minor things" would do well in this say and age lol
Yea lmao, letās just call it āNormal Things,ā or āMundane Things.ā
āYeah sure you can go!ā
Military
Itād be funny if he shows up right before the final battle and is like āyāall.. there was this hole and I went in it and.. guys I think thereās like a whole other town underneath Hawkins, but like an evil town!!ā
š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
Him and Callahan had better show up at some point this season. Having the final season be the only one they donāt appear in would be silly
I miss Argyle too šš
Oh yeah! I totally forgot about Argyle. They havenāt even mentioned him. I guess he doesnāt really have a reason to show up in Hawkins, huh?
Not really, his whole lifeās pretty much in Cali. Heās got shifts at Surfer Boy to take care of lmao. Still odd they hadnāt at least mentioned him.
Yeah, his story has been told. It would be nice if the last episode had a closing song/montage showing what all the characters are doing post-whatever conclusion occurs. Even if itās just him answering the phone at the pizza shop and continuing his life like normal
If you call the number on the pizza van he drives, it's a recording of him.
I love little marketing things like that.
Yeah I was speculating on this, and I think it would make more sense if he got trapped in Hawkins after the end of season 4 when they went into lockdown. He was still there right? I'm guessing he wasn't available for the 4th season but man I wish they could have paid whatever he was asking

Haha! I love that for Eden. She would make an amazing stoner. It would be even better if both she and Argyle were in season 5
Also, are Suzie and Dustin still dating?
That's what I was wondering. Also now that you mention I want to know what happened to Susie. Hopefully they wrap up all the loose ends
I adore Argyle š
Argyle was funny but honestly I'm glad he just went home. Stranger Things has been having a "too many characters" problem for a long time now, and trying to shoehorn in a plot for this random dude would have been too much.
I'm sure there will be a Stranger Things spin-off miniseries focused on this character.
And all the workers they ask for info from are Steve and Robin job-hopping
First to leave Hawkins at the end of season 4 (im assuming)
I just want Flo back.
Yo
He married the librarian and lived happily ever after.
I dunno, chief.
Idk but I love him
If you havenāt paid attention to the writing on the show closure with every character definitely aināt happening
At least not with these characters who can be considered side characters. The Duffers have said in the past that S5 will largely focus on the main cast and so far they've pretty much stuck to that (as in, there's no side stories so far. Every episode is about the main group)

I knew someone was gonna argue Derek as a point. He's not a side character the way that some other characters are, he's a central plot device and everything you see with him still involves the main cast.
I didn't say he was a side character, just that they spent time on him at the expense of side characters.
Where is the Mind Flayer? Coincidence???
Have we ever seen them in the same room together?
ExactlyĀ
Heās Turk in the MCU
Hence OPās caption
Oh yeah completely forgot about him and the young guy with glasses
I mean heās probably still there, we just havenāt seen what the cops are up to yet. That being said, if he was smart he wouldāve left Hawkins for a new precinct or started retirement early somewhere warm and safe
I think thereās a decent chance that he and Callahan will both show up before the end of the season, although probably not in a very significant role.
He moved to Hellās Kitchen
Man said, "Bitch, I'm out," before the lockdown and I don't blame him lol
More importantly, when is Sean astin coming back?
I like the other guy on the sheriff's force too
He died with Leo and JLaw when an asteroid hit the earth in Donāt Look Up
Wait?!!?!??! He's Turk? How did I not catch this?!? I'm so dumb...
Wait is that Turk and I never realized it?
He moved to Hell's Kitchen and the rest is history
Are you kiddinā me? Powell took one look at that gaping hole where Main Street used to be, chucked his hat and said āfuck this shit, Iām movinā to Terre Haute. At least there I know all the monsters are locked up.ā
thatās where the Trashcan Man was, right?
I don't know, but I always wished that Officer Powell and Callaghan had known all about the Upside Down; maybe they would have helped Hopper a lot.
died from ligma, very sad
ACAB except for him, Hopper, and Callahan.
The C stands for Corporations, right ?
EDIT : why do i get downvoted, ya'll are some sort of corpo gonks ?
Cops protect corporations so, both!
Well, after setting Jason off to go create a mob, completely losing control over the situation and failing to stop the deaths of Patrick, Jason, and Fred and then having hell tear up the ground all over Hawkins on his watch, maybe he ended it
He's fighting aliens in Georgia. ( Teacup)
I need closure, too
I like to imagine he quit being a cop after season 4 he definitely misses his buddy Hopper.
Reckon youāll see him again. He probably hasnāt seen Hopper since before the Battle of Starcourt so I imagine there will be an interaction between them and that other guy
Im pretty sure he died by a comet striking Earth
He got sent back to his home planet
Moved to NYC to sell guns and get beat up routinely by Daredevil and The Punisher duh.
Had to get rid of him to give Holly Wheeler more screen time.
Went cuckoo after seeing poor Vecna-fied Chrissy.
As per season 6 episode 9 he ded
With how long itās been between seasons. I forget most of these characters exist.
He dead
I love the live action gravity falls cops, I hope theyāre happy together
Seince Hawkins are overtaken by military, perhaps he relocated?
I cannot stand skeptic chiefs and detectives in shows
He met the smile demonā¦
Got swallowed up by the quake, same as Eddie.
The new Nancy book, which bridges Season 4 and 5. features him, so he is still around as of ~25% through.
i think most or all of the police would of been taken over by military like mp's or something like that
I was thinking the same thing!
Omg yes I started rewatching it and noticed him again and was just like "aw I wonder whatever happened to him I hope he isn't dead š" š
i believe his partner was last seen with maeby fighting zombies, so who knows where he ended up
Probably got the F out of Hawkins
Powell was actually pretty competent, especially for all the weird shiz going on in Hawkins. I hope we get to see more of him!
For how long the wait was for season 5, it really does feel like a lot of loose ends are gonna be left unexplained. Maybe they get away with some of these side characters being MIA because they have plans for them in the future spinoff series though
I think Daredevil beat the shit out of him!
Isnāt he the military general or something
Thatās Lucasās dad
Fell in rift.
Died in the earthquake. That is just the easy explanation for any side characters weāre not seeing in S5.
After hopper ādiedā in S4 he got promoted to chief right? Bet you heās still in charge of the local police force but dunno what theyāre all up to with the military on site like that
He got infected by the smiley demon and then went to prison for murder
Heās the new chief. They mention him on the news but he hasnāt been shown.
Iām guessing he staying safe at his home since you know miltary especially in the 80s racist
Heās a grunt.
Well it rhymes with grunt
I hope he and the other guy got fired. They were both stupid AF honestly. I didn't even find them funny.
