Redemption for whom? Charlie is dead and the narrator helped him get there. They give the ring back to ease their conscience. Granted Charlie would have ended up there regardless.
This song is a great song, that is lost in their myriad of great songs by the boys.
The lyrics are sublime
Merry Christmas to all the Charlie Freaks and humbug to all the scrooges.
Its the Die Hard of Dan songs for sure.

I always assumed that the narrator was talking to a second homeless person. He tells the story of how he let Charlie die, and then helps the new guy.
"Now come my friend I'll take your hand and lead you home"
Who is he talking to, if not someone that he's currently helping?
Everybody makes mistakes (especially if you're a character in a Steely Dan song). But this guy is now trying to be better.
The homeless guys new “home” is a coffin.
Yeah, not sure about the redemption part...

This video even shows Santa. By the way, does anyone know what the scene is with the guy cooking and seizing from?

Ty for sharing!
Have to push this when Charlie Freak shows up...
I love Charlie Parker. 34yrs old when he left. Aren't sleigh bells and smack part of everyone's Christmas?
Hell, jack of speed is a christmas song too. Those jingle bells go hard.
