Welcome to the Monthly Game & Hardware Suggestions Thread!

Do you not know what to play? Want a Steam Deck but unsure which model is best for you? Did you find a niche game that everyone should try? Do you want to share your unique experiences and learning curves with a piece of hardware in relation to Steam? Can't find the perfect survival sim or unsure which 1 RPG out of the thousands available you should buy? Well this is the thread for you. This monthly mega-thread is meant to contain questions about what to play or buy in terms of games on Steam & Hardware related to Steam and suggestions to others.

Now to make this work best and not just be spammed with generic & useless questions such as "What should I play?" or "What should I buy?", please be in-depth in what types of games/hardware you are looking for and why, and when giving advice it would be appreciated if you're more detailed than "I think X is good".

There are too many games to be able to properly suggest something with no background information, also simply commenting a game title and saying you like the game offers no actual value. The same goes for hardware: Saying you're thinking about buying X or you think Y is good with no other information, context as to why, your unique experiences, etc. offers no actual value or information to base a reply on.

The main purpose of this thread is to contain questions on what to play/buy and advice to others on what to play/buy, but feel free to ask and discuss freely in the comments regarding games and hardware, whether you want advice on what to play, want to give advice to others on what to play, share a hidden gem you found, experiences you have with Steam hardware, or your review of a piece of Steam hardware, and generic discussions & questions about discounts, sales, events, specs, or just general discussion in the realm of games and hardware.

  • Steam Deck or Machine?

We're a couple who sometimes play co-op games like Borderlands or Fallout 76, but we like our single player campaigns as well as cozy games. We're mostly couch gamers but sometimes my partner plays the Switch if I fall asleep on the couch or if she takes a break from work.

Should we wait for the Steam Machine (which recently had a placeholder price of $1070 USD?) or will the 'Deck be good enough for the next several years for TV gaming?

  • I want to play games with a controller in my laptop. I have never try a controller on pc. I read that an xbox controller have the best compatibility, is that so? and is there any difference between a wireless controller and one with cable?

  • Can the controllers be available again?

  • My friend gifted me a 100aed (or 27 USD) steam gift card but idk what games to get. any recommendations?

  • I really want to start playing games on my laptop. So, I need help to choose between two games to buy; either Disco Elysium or Undertale. Right now, Disco Elysium is on sale on my account, the price in my currency is around 3.50 USD (75% off) till 01/20 . Meanwhile, Undertale is around 5 usd (no discount).

I am honestly leaning more towards Disco Elysium but I honestly I don't know what to expect. For context, I just want to play games as a breather during my free time ( I am trying to avoid any spoilers so I don't want to search it up)

    Discord elysium 100%

  • I am looking for what to play with my brothers and friends, thought helldivers 2 is cool af for a long time but now i am getting recommended ARC raiders and idk what to buy. Thoughts? Help?

  • Ordered my OLED deck so am now looking at games. Having binge-watched The Jackal, can anyone recommend a sniper game that's not set in WW2 ?

    The sniper ghost warrior franchise.

  • Does anyone have any recommendations for cheap/discounted janky FPS games in the Winter Sale? For some reason I quite enjoy slightly janky / weird FPS games (or first person simulators) at the moment. Thanks for any recommendations.

  • My mom is having a surgery and will be unable to move around much for a couple months. We play VRFishing on the oculus every week but I would like to expand our gaming a bit. I have a computer and a steam deck. I was thinking I would make her an account and set up the steam deck on her tv. Looking for some relaxing games on steam we could play together.

  • I’m looking for games on the Apple App Store that i can play on the train (so they should be playable offline). I‘m posting this here because ive had the best experience with steam games that are ported over, since most app store games are absolute trash. I‘ve had the best experience with Slay the Spire and Balatro. Not necessarily because they are card games but because i can close them for a minute if i need to and play again later, as well as loving roguelites (although games like vampire survivors and dead cells require too much attention for me to play on the go). I‘ve had little luck looking through the app store so i‘d love some suggestions!

have you seen there is RDR1 available on mobile now? I believe it requires a Netflix subscription but its definitely one of the top options for what you mention

  • considering getting assassins Creed Odyssey by also want hydroneer but im not sure which to get

  • Hello everyone. I grew up playing video games. Full disclosure, I’m middle aged. My first system was an Atari 2600 and my last was an XBox one. I haven’t been able to play games for several years. I recently purchased a Legion Go S, and I’m looking for some recommendations on games. I definitely feel out of the loop with what’s been happening in gaming. With the winter sale going on, it seems like a great time to get my feet wet again. What are some games you might recommend for someone like me? I tend to gravitate to games with great stories, and I’m not much for online FPS.

Not sure if this helps but in a similar situation.

If you remember the old Red Baron game from Micropose and enjoyed it you can get the bundle off steam for $9.99.

I’m not sure about any multiplayer but after a little help from my teenager the game does function on the region go s with steam OS

  • Hey I have been considering getting a Steam Deck system as I don’t know which one is the best for strong battery life for tactical RPGs.

Have you looked into the Lenovo Legion Go S? From what I understand it’s like a Steam Deck with better hardware.

I actually haven’t as I would like to get one. (But I want to know where to order one, and the battery duration.

I got mine from Best Buy (not sure what’s available where you live). Battery life seems to be dependent on what you’re playing. The more graphically demanding games yield about 1.5-2 hours of gameplay on the unit in my experience. Less demanding games last longer.

I am from the East Coast actually as I could see if my local Best Buy has one. (Though I don’t know about where to get a discounted model)

I got mine during the Black Friday sale. It was $650 for the 1 TB model.
