Stargate was an awesome Roland Emmerich 90's film. SG-1 opening episode (Children of the Gods) sets up the series, but it also serves as a sequel to the movie. I love this transition!

Fast forward 7 years later: the S7 finale (Lost City) leads into the S8 premiere (New Order) and finally leads into the Atlantis premiere (Rising). This was THE EVENT to watch!

Universe followed up Atlantis and gave us a different transition. We have Icarus Base, similar to the SGC and the Alpha Site, but focused exclusively on the 9th Chevron. It was reminiscent of the Atlantis premiere (1-way), but it also felt transitionary (familiar SG base going where no man has gone before).

How about you guys?

  • The best part I love about them, and also what gives me hope our guys can do it again, was how each one continued the series in a way that newcomers could jump in without having the need to watch everything beforehand. SGA did that with John Sheppard as the newcomer insert, getting enough information without making already established fans feel like they are watching needless scenes. SGU did that with Eli watching Jackson's Stargate 101 videos.

I was noting more about how the shows branch off rather than be newbie friendly.
    #1 SG-1's premiere doubles as Stargate 2.
    #2 SG-1's S7 finale & S8 premiere lead into SGA's premiere, it's a 6-episode arc.
#3 SGU is less connected, branching off from the broader world of SG-1. Instead of the Atlantis Expedition leaving Earth, it's the Icarus Base personnel leaving an SGC / Alpha Site kind of base complete with a Milky Way stargate. O'Neill and Carter even pop up for the opening episodes.

You do make good points that Atlantis, as connected to SG-1, is also newbie friendly.

  • 100 p brotherino, I made a recent post about my love of universe, as I only caught up on it recently, I love darker themes and serialized stories, which I feel Atlantis and sgu did better than sg1, I hope the new series is able to replicate that kind of energy. Don't get me wrong I love sg1, but I want to feel honest despair and concern from the next series. In regards to the abandoned sgu, I guess I'll just assume that Eli failed and the Destiny crew is stuck floating in cryogenic suspension for the next 100 to 1000 years

When SGU came out in 2011, I didn't like the opening "Air" trilogy and passed. I found it a few years later on Netflix and gave the "Air" trilogy a 2nd go. I still didn't like it. I watched the next two episodes, the Dark-Light 2-parter, I forget the episode names, but once I finished that 5th episode, I was sold on the series. I like to call SGU Stargate EMO, but in a good way. LOL

SGU feels a little more grounded if that makes sense. Like small stuff like scenes at the SGC offices feels more “real”, and busy than what we’d see in SG-1.

Maybe, but most of the people I know who didn't like it said it felt like a soap opera in space, that everyone cried too much and was too emotional, and that this is what killed the show. How do you feel about the heavy EMO elements? Personally, I didn't mind, but I do think it contributed to the show's cancellation.

It was more a survival / adventure show than action / comedy, about people not equipped for the situation. The human drama was needed.

That's not what my friends objected to. They were fine with the hard survival and adventure tone of the show. They just found all of the characters to be a complete mess of emotions. Keep in mind, I've never seen anyone be as EMO in real life as they are on SGU. (shrug)

I mean people aren’t billions light years away from earth on a dilapidated space ship with minimal supplies.

I remember COVID. I remember people throwing shitfits at the minor inconvenience of wearing a mask.

The Destiny crew were people in a harrowing situation, their emotional distress felt appropriate.

I'm in my 40's and just never seen anyone "break down" like in the show with the exception of people who've been abused, or an abuser having an angry meltdown. Outside of that, I've only known people to be relatively calm. (shrug) This is why my local friends found SGU unrelatable. Personally, I get it's a TV show, drama dialed up to 11, I loved the whole SGU = EMO's in space. haha
