I think he mostly gets hate from people who don't understand depression
Not sure about that, depression has been a lifelong struggle for me, but I would never romance Shane. I have had friends who have gotten wrapped up dating alcoholics, I lived with an alcoholic, alcoholism runs in my family…. When I see him passed out I just feel emotionally exhausted lol.
I mean youre presenting valid reasons why you wouldnt romance him, not aggressively hating him. A lot of people do the latter. There's nothing wrong with not wanting to date him or even not particularly liking him, but when going on a hate campaign against him, to the point you're fundamentally misrepresenting his character, I feel like that's different.
I guess what I am saying is even though I don’t really have strong feelings about it, I get how someone can and it has nothing to do with “not understanding depression”— Alcoholics are not just depressed, they have a substance dependency on something that rewires their brain and can bring a lot of grief for those around them. Are they fundamentally misrepresenting his character? I don’t really know what people are saying about him, I haven’t seen anything outlandish about him though I am sure you are right. I also feel like its fiction, so character is up for interpretation? Alcoholics can really impact others up longterm via their emotional instability, rage, and tendency to put their physical safety in the hands of others, so I think people being strongly deterred by him to the point of hate isn’t hard for me to imagine. I had a good friend who was a lot like Shane, but he ended up being very toxic. I mostly feel sad for these guys.

I have and have had a fair share of mental issues (and within my family as well) and don’t really hate Shane for being himself. I hate that overwhelmingly weird and creepy “I can fix him” energy most of the people who love and marry Shane have. It genuinely creeps me out because I can’t understand the appeal at all. Shane is fine but I can’t understand him as a romance option at all

if it can help to know that not everyone has the "i can fix him" thing lol. i honestly think the majority of people who do have that, are probably the same who end up disappointed bc he doesn't magically end up a Flawless Being who is Forever Happy. i believe "real" shane fans mostly like him for other reasons than "fixing" him :D
Yes. I like him because he's refreshingly real in a game that's otherwise blindly optimistic. Once you get him to high hearts, he's actually really charming, witty, self-aware and emotionally honest, and I love that. It's the same reason I love romancing Alex; them gradually opening up to you feels quite fantastic. It's not "I can fix him", it's "I'm glad he feels comfortable enough to share it with me"
Also, I think he's hot. Especially with the cuter aesthetics mod...
In my experience the "I can fix him" people are the ones who actually hate Shane because he realistically depicts depression and therefore doesn't magically get "fixed" by friendship or marriage.
Every Shane lover I know wants to support him, not change him.

Well, for a lot of people (especially men), alcoholism is a way to cope with depression. It's not healthy, it's a very unpleasant kind of depression for most people. Some of us who suffer from depressions that aren't so pleasant in the public eye understand this. It's not about romanticizing addicts, it's about understanding why depression can cause it. Shane overcomes it and tries to get better, and that's what I like about him

In college my roommate/bff's main household was literally just our friend group! If they were playing while we were hanging out it meant we got the most off the walls commentary about what "we" were doing.

The first time I made my whole family in the sims my mom and step father ended up divorcing and then my stepfather and sister kissed and that’s when I shut it down and to only ever make myself and no other family members ever again lmao.
That kinda thing is inevitable when writing a story, every author draws from their own life when creating stuff. Shane's storyline is pretty well handled, I felt a lot of care for this character from the game (if you pick the right dialogue options that is), so it wouldn't surprise me if his friend took it well
As a writer, probably not! I have written romances for characters who are heavily inspired by my friends and it was never awkward. It’s not like playing dolls with your friend, it’s more like creating a new person who has all the traits you love about that friend (and sometimes also their flaws). You don’t think of the character as actually being them. At least, that’s how I feel.

I think Shane being based off a real person has more awkward problems in that he's a suicidal alcoholic for a lot of his friendship events
Imagine seeing those scenes and instead of them being sad or kinda relatable you've gotta sit through them like "this character is BASED OFF OF ME"
I didn't know that! But I always thought CA wrote the characters based on his own idiosyncrasies or the one of people he knows, which is why the game feels "real".

I’m so enchanted by this. Shane is my favourite SDV character and I have only ever romanced him. I have chickens myself so him loving and raising them was always going to get me.
