• Setting aside all the perfectly valid criticisms of Tom Cruise as a person, I think it’s kinda cool how much the guy really loves making movies and has a genuine interest in every part of the process. The only reason Mission Impossible movies are still being made is because he enjoys the process of planning and executing these big stunts. And I love the idea that if he’s on set just to hang out and you joke about him taking the camera for an afternoon, he’s gonna do it.

How many people would do that while on a break from their job? Like, how many chefs would be on vacation and decide to jump on the line for the dinner rush just because?

Bro imagine if he never became a high standing member of a cult. He has so many things that make me wanna like him. The sheer amount of quality films he's in. Doing his own stunts. Continuing to make some of the only good new action movies. But like... scientology...

Yeah, it’s wild how his talent and dedication clash with his cult involvement.

He's 100% trapped in Scientology. Every single audit is recorded and stored by the church. They have enough dirt at this point to end him for a thousand lifetimes. Most people don't even know he left Scientology for a few years in the mid '90s, yet somehow, they got him back. Gee, I wonder how that happened? I'm not excusing his continued involvement by any means, but this is just the way cults work.

Apparently he seperated him self a few years ago but that could’ve heresay

Scientology in general is a complete shadow of it's former self. They have stopped suing ex memebers (or hounding them) for instance.

Reason is that some ex members, HIGH ranking ones, came out into the open about "the hole", a prison/dungeon to "discipline" the ones "not loyal enough". Now these claims didn't happen in a court of law, however the MOMENT Scientology EVER sues someone again... they can get all the info they need about the hole via discovery which would throw a lot of people into prison for life.

And that has basically "scared them straight" for the last few years. Scientology is on super thin ice now. They have lost like 90% of their members since and are unable to recruit any new ones.

    Finally some good fucking news.

the MOMENT Scientology EVER sues someone again... they can get all the info they need about the hole via discovery

This is incredibly optimistic on your part. Sure, they can, but Scientology is gonna do everything in their power to ensure that they don't. Most cults are at their most dangerous when they are about to be exposed.

Look I watched Louis Theroux's scientology documentary, and while the part about "the hole" is true, it also painted a pretty damning picture of Tom Cruise basically being Miscavige's right-hand man and not just someone who is "trapped in Scientology" as the other commenter said.

i’m not saying he’s a good person, and i haven't seen this particular documentary, but this is how cults work. they push you into doing things you’d never normally do, and even if you start to realise it’s wrong, it often turns into “remember all the awful things you’ve already done? now do this next awful thing, or else”.

He has been pretty quiet about it for a while now, now that I think about it. Hopefully he realises.

    I don't believe it.

I also disagree with the statement that he was "trapped". Maybe he kind of would be, but he's there willingly and supports LRon's vision, or at least what Scientology is. He's basically up at the head of the organisation.

Contrast that with Will Smith, who's only there because his wife is a member. She basically has him wrapped around her finger. She literally had a relationship with their son's rapper best friend - she pretty much groomed him after his mom died - and Will was supposedly okay with this. There's a video of the two of them chatting on her Red Table video podcast, and you can see the dead behind his eyes when he agrees with her over their open relationship. Frankly, I think she threatens to take the kids and hide them away in the church if he doesn't toe her line, and that may be an explanation for his strange behaviour eg punching Chris Rock.

Tom Cruise doesn't have any of that, because he's all in. He only "separated" as it's better PR for him, so he can make even more money which he shares with the church.

I wasn't aware that he had "separated" and I'm still kind of doubtful as to whether or not that is true, but he's "trapped" in the sense that he can never leave because they control every aspect of his life and know all of his dirty secrets.

He's also good to the crew. I've only heard him being a joy to work with. Shame he's not just a member, he's the leader of Scientology.

I remember during lockdowns there was leaked audio of him just absolutely reaming someone for not wearing their mask. He was really serious about doing everything right because everyone was watching them and he wanted to make sure everyone was still getting paychecks. Definitely seems like generally just a pretty legit dude by most accounts.

I remember that story, and I think I heard a blurb maybe from the guy who got yelled at, that after all that happened I think he said Tom came and even apologized for the rant.

David Miscaviage is the leader of Scientology. Cruise is just their most famous member. While I'm sure he gets treated better than most other Scientologists, and is likely quite close to Miscaviage, the cult keeps people in its sphere (including its celebrities) through incredible amounts of blackmail, including blackmail concerning things they coerce the members to do.

No one there aside from Miscavage gets treated better than he does. He’s not just close with Miscavage, he’s the reason the cult still exists. He’s been the key to recruitment for decades

He's absolutely not the leader of Scientology.

He probably would’ve been among my favorites if he wasn’t a Scientology asshole.

It's why I wont listen to any of the new Linkin Park music. I like her voice, not as good as Chester, but Emily Armstrong is a scientologist. So I just won't listen to anything of the new Linkin Park music.

    It sucks

She has the sort of excuse of being born into it, not freely joining as an adult

I know she was, and I understand how hard time leave a religion that you're born into.

If she's still a Scientologist I try to not support anything they're part of.

Holy shit, people are really still going on with this narrative about her? She hasn't been seen at a Scientology event since 2013 and she was born into it.

If she's not part of it anymore? I would be glad to be wrong.

If you know more about her than me then maybe you can clear up another confusion I've heard about her. I heard she doesn't believe in depression, which I found insulting knowing what Chester had. Is that true or not and can you provide a link that I can read up on it?

Edit: Down votes fit asking a honest question and perfectly happy to admit if I'm wrong.

It's very hard to publicly leave and denounce Scientology. The church has done all sorts of fucked up stuff to people who do so, character assassination and discreditation being the two most common, but they do plenty worse. The fact that she is openly gay directly contradicts Scientology believes. She has many lyrics in her Dead Sara songs that also openly go against popular church beliefs. She was born into it and indoctrinated as a child, so it's not like she ever had a choice.

Regarding the mental health stuff, that's the first I've heard that she doesn't believe in depression, haven't seen that anywhere. In the video in the link below, she's openly talking about the importance of mental health, so the whole "not believing in depression" thing just seems like a bunch of nonsense.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/LinkinPark/comments/1gkz6qo/the_sickening_lie_of_emily_not_believing_in/

Thank you for the clarification! I'm glad and hope I'm wrong!

That toxic and dangerous nature of Scientology is why I had such a problem with them picking her in the first place. Maybe I will do more research and see if I can find anything more recent.

I think it's important to remember that he is a victim of a cult.

I hope I can find a job that I enjoy that much

I would enjoy any job that results in me getting several hundred million dollars.

That energy is wild—he treats filmmaking like a playground, not just a job.

And we need more filmmakers with that energy, if we're going to be completely honest. I understand that there are very serious aspects to the job and at the end of the day, these are serious artists who want to make their visions come to life. That aside, we wouldn't be anywhere near where we are today film-wise if it weren't for the risk-taking innovations of ILM, Spielberg, Hitchcock, Kubrick, or any of the other greats who had to come up with ways of making sure their artistic visions were done in a way they didn't have access to before. Post-processing with CGI or even AI has made it far too easy to get "close enough" that it seems truly innovating on a set seems to be going the way of the dodo. The last time I remember hearing about a crazy new innovation or technique was Taika Waititi coming up with the halo lighting rig for Ragnarok's flashback sequence (Sure we can bring up the Volume as an amazing invention, but the overuse of it in recent media has made scenes feel cookie-cutter with respect to camera angles or how many characters you can have in a shot at one time)

Yeah, the guy is just a ball of energy.

Family Guy has Tiny Tom Cruise and his vibe is 100% spot on 😂

He may be a weirdo, but he LOVES making movies, and apparently, it is great to work with him. Kevin Pollak had a podcast episode about how hard Tom worked on "A Few Good Men", and how nice he was to Kevin. (He borrowed Tom's pen, and it led to a whole story.)

I miss Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show so, so very much. I think I need to re-listen, if it’s still available.

Yeah... I was sad when I had to replace my phone and the icon for his show just... wasn't on my player app any more. It was REALLY good.

(I got to talk to LeVar Burton about being the first guest on KPCS. He laughed about having to crawl under the table so he wouldn't walk in front of the camera.)

Not to mention on set he's always respectful and a decent person to work with. Like him yelling at the people breaking Covid distancing wasn't him being a prima Donna, it was him getting angry and exaperated at people risking the entire production and everyone jobs being shut down.

I've legit done that last thing before.

To be clear, I didn't do it at some random restaurant, I knew the Owner and the Sous Chef working that night, and the family went out to eat there because I knew them. They were in the weeds because someone called in.

Old friends of mine that I grew up with and worked with before I moved. Not at that restaurant though. Ran a range and a char grill.

Got through the shift, got free food, went out to a bar after, had a great time.

Tom is a capable (not great imo) actor, but he's clearly passionate about movie making in all forms.

Too bad about the cult tho

I will not be setting that aside.

  • We’re getting Henry Cavill reloading his biceps 💪

Now I’m imagining Cavill as Revan reloading his fists holding the two lightsabers

Why is this non-existent gif looping perfectly in my mind?

  • Tom Cruise was up to his ankles in mud and pond water. He wore a look of great concentration as he stooped over a digital camera, trying to frame the perfect shot.

Shawn Levy glanced around in slight disbelief. Partly it was that he was on the set of his very own “Star Wars” movie, “Star Wars: Starfighter,” with Ryan Gosling. And partly it was the steady stream of A-list visitors. “Last week Steven Spielberg was here. And now Tom Cruise is wielding a camera, ruining his very nice shoes.”

It was a brisk morning in November and Cruise had dropped by from nearby London, landing his helicopter on set as the crew piped in the “Mission: Impossible” theme over the loudspeakers. Cruise just wanted to watch, he told them, but Levy, setting up a scene involving a lightsaber duel in the water, suggested the star jump on one of the cameras. He’d meant it as a joke. But there was Cruise, wading into the muddy pond, holding the camera like a pro.

Up to his ankles?? My god that must have been at least what, a full centimeter of mud?

  • I'm just glad they're actually filming a new movie.

Completely filmed actually, now they’re in post production and I’m glad they’ll have almost a year and a half to work on it!

  • That sounds like…..Risky Business.

    Some said, it was Impossible.

    More or les... Grossman.

  • Tom Cruise doesn't understand what it means to joke about something. If you make a suggestion to him and he approves of it, he will do the thing that you suggested at 120% effort. Say what you want about him as a person: He is the most insanely dedicated individual in Hollywood.

That's the real reason he's still a global star in spite of being in the upper echelons of a dangerous cult.

Guarantee if Marvel gave him complete control of a movie, he’d give us the greatest single entry in the entire franchise.

Whole movie shot with practical effects with an amazing story and characters. Doesn’t even matter what franchise either.

"Ant-Man goes to the Quantum Realm, no CGI!"

"Why don't you go jump off a fucking bridge, Tom?"

    "Hold on, be right back..."

Present it to him as a thrilling new stunt for the next Mission Impossible movie.

Yeah absolutely. He learned German to play a Nazi in Valkyrie. Even though like 90% of the film is in English.

Guy is a literal machine of work.

  • That actually sounds awesome

This is like a tidbit you'd hear about years after the movie released, as part of a movie trivia. But I'm glad we're hearing stuff like this already cus it only increases my excitement

Feels like old-school behind-the-scenes chaos—in a good way. Makes the production feel confident already.

Yeah, it's great PR and hits hard because we all want Hollywood to be a little more authentic. People having fun makes a big difference.

I like how the two main top comments couldn't be more different from one another on the lightsabers inclusion lol.

  • This is how I learned that this movie will have lightsabers lol. Figured it was going to be more grounded away from the force but I guess Disney needs their Jedi/Sith.

    Disney needs their Jedi/Sith.

The last TV show, game, and animated show were all stories without them

Andor, Skeleton Crew, and Bad Batch were all incredibly light or had no lightsabers too. I think I'm intrigued who's going to be using it since it's post sequel trilogy here.

Didn’t Skeleton Crew have multiple scenes/some pretty important story stuff involving a lightsaber? Or am I going crazy lol

It did. I’m pretty sure the Force user was even in the marketing leading up to the show.

It had a lightsaber, but it wasn't about Jedi/Sith, really. I don't think it even really gets used other than as a threat; overall it's treated like it would be in-universe, a neat old weapon they find.

One of the kids finds it in the goonies style treasure room about halfway through the series....he ignites it briefly, the former jedi character then ignites it but you don't see it, you only hear it then the finale has him ignite it in a threatening manner a couple of times but never actually using it to harm anyone. Oh and the kid has some kind of hand held device with an image of a jedi holding a lightsaber that we see a few times throughout the series.

Wasn’t a Force user with a lightsaber one of the main characters in Skeleton Crew? Not an official “Jedi” but still…

Bro was barely half trained, turned from the path and was using his force powers for piracy. The lightsaber is only used significantly in the final episode where he uses it as credibility that hes a true jedi to the people of At Atin who are none the wiser. Later on he uses it to terrorize and in an attempt to murder the children.

he never really intends to harm the children let alone murder them...that was part of his character, all bluff and bluster

I mean Skeleton Crew had a Jedi

... kinda. A little bit. But not really.

Most episodes of Mando/ TBOBF as well. And me too! Although it could also be a flashback and not necessarily a fight that takes place post-TROS.

Andor had basically a singular scene that barely involved the Force and the rest of the show was normal people dealing with oppression and authoritarianism. It was so nice to see more stories can be done within the universe.

And the scene with the Force is kind of vague as to whether it's real or just someone getting some weird vibes.

Did you even watch Skelton crew?

i believe Gosling will be our Jedi, i wonder who he's fighting. fallen jedi maybe? all we know is it cannot be a sith at this point in the timeline

Most people probably want to see lightsabers in Star Wars, if I had to guess.

As much as I love lightsaber fights, Andor was a breath of fresh air.

I'd love more grounded war stories.

Pretty disappointed to learn this, tbh. Was really excited to get to see more Star Wars without being force fed more of the same old stuff that fans are growing tired of.

Unless its some i jedi, corran horn/rogue squadron stuff!!!

That'd be fun, I suppose! I figured we'd never get Rogue Squadron level content from Disney though, given they have the entire storyline ready for them but we haven't seen it haha.

I see what you did there

Promise you fans are not growing tired of lightsaber fights, lol. Bad ones, maybe

Yeah, I was really hoping for something focused on starship piloting. I always felt like pilots in Star Wars were of the coolest folk, but everything has to be focused on force users for some reason.

With Filoni taking a co-chair role as lead of Lucasarts, it’s only going to get worse.

I love his work for the most part, but over the years it has become far too self-referential for me.

I don't mind it being self referential. That was always Star Wars. Read the Old EU and the number of books that don't center around the same dozen characters can be counted on two hands.

But there are non Jedi stories to be told. I enjoyed Solo just for that reason. Give me smugglers, give me fighter pilots, give me soldiers. Jedi feel less and less mythical when every story revolves around them.

Assume Ahsoka is appearing in every show

Everything will link back around to Ahsoka or Filoni's pet clones until they're the main characters of Star Wars. Hell, we're already kinda there with Ahsoka.

Your mistake is thinking fans are tired of lightsaber fights. Reddit is not real life.

Heck, even Reddit, which mostly hated The Acolyte, had nothing but breathless praise for its lightsaber fights. Even the most jaded fans still aren't tired of lightsaber fights.

Thats helped by the martial arts and lightsabre fighting being pretty elite

Skeleton Crew was more grounded than the movies & it still had lightsabers. Disney can have its cake & eat it too

I find it funny how people dislike Star Wars for being Star Wars.

Go watch the Expanse for hard sci-fi.

Can’t even have Star Wars with some Jedi now without people complaining holy shit

Star wars contains lightsabers and jedi, star wars is not lightsabers and jedi. God forbid fans want the ip to expand their scopes instead of always using the exact same things.

10+ movies involving the same family in a massive storytelling universe.

Mando was great for a season and a half. I'd even enjoy the Skywalker cameo if it wasn't almost immediately reversed. But then they had to use the show as a pilot testbeds for other projects and then use it to try and force parts of the sequels to make sense.

Or maybe because Jedi aren't everything Star Wars is about? Its huge universe and this point there's so much more to it. Jedi and Sith were supposed to be almost like demigods that were in very low numbers and something most living beings had never even seen(including lightsabers). Nowadays based on shows feels like every 5th person is a Jedi or Sith(or ex one). It goes against the lore and just makes the whole universe feel extremely small. It has also become very lazy plot point. Obviously we don't know the context of this fight, but 2 very rare lightsabers somehow facing each other in this universe already hints at some sort of Jedi vs Sith style confrontation and that just sounds very disappointing. Big reason why Andor was so great, because it focused on "normal" people behind Rebellion and Empire.

No I like SW being SW I just thought that movie called starfighter would focus less on lightsabers and jedi and more on pilots and flying starfighters. Since it's something we've never gotten as a stand alone concept outside of games and books. That's all.

It's a little disappointing for me, personally. For me the highlight of Star Wars when I was a kid watching the OT - the thing that got me hooked - was the trench run in ANH. It was so cool. It was so tense. It was more tense action than the lightsaber content in that movie. When I was a kid I never wanted to have a lightsaber battle (until the "new" prequel trilogy came out, I guess?). I wanted to be an X-Wing pilot, or be manning the turrets on the Falcon.

I know a lot of people love Jedi, Sith, and more laser sword battles. We just have a lot of it in the last few decades to the point that the content without all that feels new and fresh.

I miss the snubfighters weaving around capital ships and dogfighting and the large scale space battles. Rogue One delivered on that. I appreciated that they tried in TLJ.

Me too, this was my thought process all the time as a kid. And not even Red-Five, I'd be idolizing even 5 second screentime pilots. They've always been the true heroes of Star Wars to me.

We have a lot of it because it’s Star Wars.

Believe it or not, there has always been an audience in Star Wars for gritty, grounded stories where Jedi/Sith/Force-sensitive characters either play a bit part or don't show up at all. Eg, the X-Wing series, the Republic Commando series, and the bounty hunter focused series.

It's a big setting with a lot of room for more stories and different stories. Disney just seems to be a little allergic to plots that don't showcase force users. Hopefully the fact that Andor did so incredibly well will mean that they'll be more willing to expand the setting beyond Jedi vs Sith.

That doesn't mean that you don't get your Jedi or Sith content you love. It just means that there's more content for everyone to enjoy, and more new settings and characters to play with. It is a big galaxy, or at least, it should be.

Star Wars without lightsabers like any medieval movie without swords.

Disney has learned the hard truth: lightsabers get you to $1 B.

    No Lightsabers means Solo BO.

Regular people who aren’t hardcore SW “fans” want to see Lightsabers in a SW movie because that is what makes it different from say, any other science fiction thing.

Andor would’ve done 8X better at least if Gilroy would’ve succumbed to the pressure to include like, Inquisitors or Vader or something. Glad he didn’t, but that would’ve pushed the show so much easier to people.

Whoever gave this an award clearly forgot The Acolyte exists. It had all the lightsabers you could ask for & was cancelled immediately.

Also pretty sure we haven’t seen a single saber in The Mando & Gogru marketing nor do I really expect one.

Yes, people like lightsabers. No, they are not make or break inclusions.

Edit: Reddit won’t let me reply to any other comments in this thread but all I’ll say in response to the people still replying to me: the fact that they have a movie coming out in 5 months that features zero sabers in its marketing (maybe there ends up being some in the film itself) counters everything the comment I replied to said (which I guess is now deleted but basically said Disney thinks it’s impossible for a SW movie to succeed without a lightsaber in it)

Acolyte failing had zero to do with lightsabers and I’m sure they didn’t hurt it.

I agree. The general consensus (maybe unanimously) is the lightsaber fights are the best part of the show, and may have the best lightsaber fights of all Disney Star Wars movies and shows.

More evidence to your point - Season 1 of the Mandolorian features all of, what, 45 seconds of "lightsaber" - singular. And maybe 3-5 minutes of the Force total.

It was cancelled because it cost 250M-270M+ to produce.

    Yes viewership was down.

But think about the fucking scale. A movie that costs 250M+ to make needs to make $1B at the box office to get a sequel.

You think a Television show doesn’t have to be the most watched show in history to justify that kindof expense?

We only got two seasons of Andor because Gilroy locked that in. Disney basically begrudgingly made Andor S2.

Amazon at least can say a fuck ton of people check out Rings of Power (and equally insanely expensive TV show)

Like, I get that today most of you guys on Reddit don’t have a scale for reference anymore, but TV shows do not cost this much.

Hannibal was cancelled after 3 seasons and it barely cost something like $2-3M an episode for that show.

This. The lightsaber is one of the most iconic weapons in fiction, its synonymous with Star Wars, and most people LOVE great lightsaber duels.

The Jedi and Sith, and the Force is what Star Wars is all about, thats at the heart of the entire thing.

Jedi and Sith are what makes Star Wars unique and appealing. Just look how few turned up for Star Wars Outlaws. It may have been Ubisoft slop, but a lot of people also weren't interested in blaster weapons either.

Andor won critical acclaim but it wasn't exactly a breaking ratings.

People can go and watch Star Trek if they don't want lightsabers 👌

I don’t understand why people get so angry seeing lightsabers and Jedi in a Star Wars movie. That is the main thing that differentiates Star Wars from other sci fi, why shouldn’t it be included?

Speaking personally, it's because it's a show called 'Starfighter'. So, I assumed it would be focusing on fighter pilots doing starfighter things, and now they are talking about a lightsaber duel. I'm fine with lightsabers and the Force in a show where that fits, but it doesn't need to be in everything.

Both Luke Skywalker and Anakin Skywalker are great pilots and have extended sequences of piloting starfighters. Actually, all of the Jedi and Sith have starfighters. Starfighters have always been something used by anyone, not just Rebel soldiers and Stormtroopers.

But this film isnt supposed to be set at a time where there are Jedi and Sith.

If this film was set in the Old or High Republic then you could have that, but this film is supposed to be set around the sequel era, so people were rightly assuming it would be about normal starfighters, not force sensitives

Redditors want 'grounded sci-fi' not the space fantasy that Star Wars is

Probably for the Marketing and general audiences also need some lightsaber action. But your right it is a shame this is retreading similar material already. However look at the other people's comments it's just cool and people wanna have fun watching the movie and If Star Wars can deliver that again it's all good.

Yeah you'd think the movie called "Starfighter" would have been less about the force and more about Pilots but here we are. Disappointed again.

  • lol. Some of you are actually bitching because a STAR WARS movie... would include light sabers?!?

What's next, getting pissed because a Rocky movie has boxing in it?!?

It's wild seeing what people think would be a good movie

They want to see a movie indistinguishable from any generic sci-fi movie of the last decade. There should be no fantasy elements, just a bunch of grounded, gritty realism by characters who are only morally grey, and all the themes of Star Wars should be ignored

Like, go watch District 9 and Elysium.

Modern media has done irreversible damage to people. Everything has to resemble the real world now. God forbid we have some escapism sometimes.

Star Wars fans don't know what they want. Disney was the best thing to happen to Star Wars and I will continue to support them if they continue to pump out Star Wars content.

Yes, some bad things come out but for every bad thing there are equally great things like Darth Vader killing a bunch of Rebels in a hallway, Andor, the video games, Darth Bortles, etc.

They psyched themselves up to think what Reddit wants is what we were going to get lol.

Yeah, after the ST, hopefully that never happens again.

I stg.. bc who doesn’t want to see lightsaber battles and the force in literal Star Wars??? Like what are we talking about

ah yes, Rocky VII, Adrians Revenge.

I think it's more after the sequels some people are expecting a different to take the franchise forward. And this film being titled STARFIGHTER you'd expect it to be about non force users at least and focus on the pilots.

Star Wars is driven by the Jedi, the Sith, and The Force, that other stuff should be side content and tv shows and the occasional movie.

Taking away the magic of lightsaber fights and cool Star Wars from kids to appease the, "I want different," fans is not the direction the franchise should ever go. Want that kind of different? They're already making it. Go watch Mando or Andor.

This property is about kids and giving them what most of us got when we were younger. I think people lose sight of how great it was to experience Luke, or Anakin, or Obi Wan do cool stuff. Rey and whatever this will be is for the kids to get to feel that too.

I don't disagree and agree with you Star Wars is magical in that way. Moreso I was explaining why some people would have those thoughts.

How do you know it’s not focused on pilots?

Focusing on pilots and focusing on lightsabers are not mutually exclusive

  • I hope his framing is better than that thumbnail.

  • Tom just wanted a cool story to match Daniel Craig's Stormtrooper story.

  • Personality aside, Tom Cruise knows his actions scenes, so this should be pretty cool. I am a little disappointed that Disney couldn't just leave Jedi/Sith out of this project but we will see how it goes I guess

  • I thought they were moving away from lightsabers. When does this movie take place?

5 years after Rise of Skywalker according to Wookiepedia

Might not be Rey, could either be someone new or even Shin Hati, Ezra or Sabine, considering they’d be young enough to be around after the Sequels? How old would Ahsoka be at that point? Would Baylan Skoll be an option too?

IMO, if it’s not Rey, it is quite likely a new character.

My guess would be either Rey or an unexpected/new character. I just assume everyone Ahsoka adjacent isn’t showing up outside of Ahsoka S2 & whatever Filoni’s New Republic movie ends up being.

We're not going to see any of the Ahsoka characters without seeing (at a minimum) Ahsoka season 2. They aren't going to jump to a different point in their timeline before we even know if/how they escape their present circumstances at the end of Ahsoka S1.

Ahsoka would be oldish, but don't Togrutas live like 200 years or something. Idk who Shin Hati is. My guess is probably someone new since the inclusion of lightsabers was so casually announced.

Shin Hati is Baylan Skoll’s apprentice from the Ashoka series, the dark side suers who aren’t Sith.

She's one of the main antagonists in Ahsoka. Apprentice of a Dark Jedi (not sith) named Baylan Skoll

Isn’t Ahsoka dead during TROS? We hear her voice speaking to Rey

Who said they were moving away from lightsabers?

Why tf would they "move away from lightsabers" its STAR WARS lmao

Weird thing to think when no one said that outside redditors hoping for some gritty, non-star wars movie

    So…making Star Wars generic Sci-Fi?

    Google ‘Corran Horn’

  • Star Wars isn't Star Wars without the Jedi/Sith, in my opinion so I think it is cool to have Lightsabers

  • I mean, honestly why wouldn’t you? I would do it if someone let me.

  • Whyyyy do we need a light sabre duel in a Starfighter movie??? 😭

  • Why does the movie called “Starfighter” has lightsaber duel in in?) ahha they check all boxes to be sure I guess

  • I knew there was a reason I got a great sleep last night. It’s because Tom “cult leader” Cruise waved a camera around two cosplay stuntmen holding swords. What a newsworthy story.

  • I don't lightsabers in my Starfighter Pilot movie.

    /end rant

  • why is there a lightsaber duel in a movie about fighter pilots?

because it's star wars is not an answer.

    Because it’s Star Wars.

  • Fuck Tom Cruise on a personal level. But, as a professional in the film industry, he does seem pretty fucking cool.

  • I'm just glad we're gonna get a lightsaber duel. It feels like we've waited 21 years since the last great one.

The Stranger vs the Jedi in Acolyte was pretty great. Folks can say what they will about the show, but that sequence was brilliant.

All lightsaber fights in that were amazing and it was nice to see live action can still pull off how amazing it can be. We havent had good live action lightsaber action like that since the prequels.

Yeah the show itself was hot trash but please keep the choreography person for the saber fights because they were on point! It was nice to see a clever move like that quick stab from the little dagger saber.

I remember being so excited watching Force Awakens when Kylo caught and held that blaster shot! It was like “whoa, this is new!” A bit downhill after that but man that idea was superb!

Say what you will about the Acolyte, but it had peak lightsaber duels

Seriously, Acolyte and Ahsoka both had great duels.

    acolyte yes, ahsoka meh

I enjoyed the rewatch recently with my son more than my original viewing. Once all the noise settled and you filter out the whining from chuds online it’s actually a pretty cool show and story. I’m pretty upset it’s not getting more episodes. I feel Iike it was really getting good at the end. Great villain and the tease of Darth Plagueis. Plenty of story left

Not the same as a getting a second season, but there are two Acolyte novels, The Crystal Crown & Wayseeker.

Personally love the one at the end of TFA.

The snowy setting was really unique and made the sabers really pop. They felt weighty for the first time in decades.

And there were plenty of cool details, like how Kylo Ren toys with Finn until he gets overconfident and concedes a hit, at which point he immediately shuts the fight down.

(But no, I don’t think Rey should have won.)

I thought the ones in The Acolyte were pretty great.

  • Damn I would rather them tell a story without Jedi or Sith.

    Maybe it isn't either but...

  • This is peak Reddit. Only in a Reddit subreddit dedicated to SW would you see a bunch of people losing their minds that the most notable feature of SW is going to be in a SW movie. Everything today is just “How can I find a way to be unhappy about this?”

We just learned that one of the last great action stars who is tirelessly devoted to making cool shit helped out with lightsaber action... and people are treating that like a bad thing.

    Make it make sense.

  • Star Wars has literally always been about the power struggle between the Jedi and the Sith and whose faction controls the galaxy. Complaining about a movie containing space wizards in a franchise about space wizards is like bitching about their being wizards in a Harry Potter movie.

I was just thinking this, it would be like complaining that the Death Eaters use magic at the Battle of Hogwarts instead of cannons and traditional warfare. People complaining about lightsabers and force users in Star Wars is peak internet clown behavior lmao

  • YOU KNOW WHAT WILL SAVE AND REBOOT THE FRANCHISE!???…… good god LFL is clueless.

  • What the hell is that title?

  • This sounds like such a strangely thought out film.

So its called starfighter but it just seems to be another escort mission film to drop off a force sensitive kid with some unknown Jedi who will appear at the end whilst trying to keep said force sensitive kid from bad guys probably wielding some form of lightsaber.

Didnt we get that in the Mandalorian?

I was hoping to get a proper star fighter / rogue squadron type film, but I guess not.

Also i wonder if it will have good looking lightsabers or the chunky, poorly coloured, glow stick lightsabers Disney seem desperate to use instead of the classic, good looking effects.

  • i bet the fight will happen with the duelists hanging outside a moving plane, er starfighter...

    -G.

  • This sounds like it will be a very memorable scene, and should probably be pretty visually striking too! I’m hyped! Also, sounds like Steven Spielberg visited—that would be a childhood dream fulfilled for anyone in the movie business.

  • I like that they aren’t overselling it. One good duel is better than a bunch of flashy fights that don’t matter. Curious how it’ll look compared to the sequels.

  • I'm in

Never saw SW in thearter but this is ginna be my first SW in thearter because of Cruise

  • Was hoping for some SW content without lightsabers for once (not that they’re not awesome but for some different). Cautiously optimistic with this

  • Tom Cruise demanded they fight using actual lightsabers

Then paid for the technology to be built himself.

  • Great....so that's at least one action sequence in the "Starfighter" movie that probably won't involve starfighters.

Star Wars can be more than just the same stuff over and over. I was really hoping this would be a movie that didn't have Jedi/Sith stuff.

  • Do you mean to tell me Ethan Hunt is directing a fight scene? I can’t wait for this!

  • Mission Impossible 8.5

  • I was kind of hoping for a movie just about normal starfighter pilots. There's a lot of potential for something like a Rogue Squadron story. Why are there Jedi? When does this movie take place?

My thought exactly. This absolutely kills any interest I had in the movie if it is Jedi centric.

  • I genuinely thought this was a satire post reading it.

Wait, why do they even have a Jedi lightsaber duels in a "starfighter" movie?! Did they learn nothing from Andor's success? And why people say Mandalorian got worse as it went along?

  • Why is there a light saber duel in this movie?

  • I was kinda hoping this movie would be about... Starfighters, rather than lightsaber fights
