I’ve been in MSM 5-10g/day for 6 weeks. Using it to treat gut Dysbiosis/sibo. It’s been really helpful. The last two weeks I’ve been really struggling with fatigue and brain fog. Liver discomfort and urine that smells like ammonia as well. L-ornithine doesn’t do much. I take molybdenum. Just started L-Glutamine. I will start epsom salt foot baths to help process the sulfur “studies indicate that the compound methionine sulfoximine (MSM) causes a sharp increase in blood ammonia concentrations by inhibiting the liver enzyme glutamine synthetase.” Is there anything I can take to help with the increased ammonia?

Be aware that anecdotes, even your own anecdote could be an artifact of your beliefs. The placebo effect is just one way that suggestion affects our experience. Humans are social animals and the beliefs we accept can have a drastic impact on our experience. In many, if not most, cases the impact of our beliefs is greater than the impact of chemicals. This isn’t only true for herbs and supplements. ‘New’ or ‘dangerous’ sounding drugs can bring a rush when you first start taking them because of the fear and excitement. When the excitement wears off you’re back to baseline. Beware of the self-experimentation treadmill. If you aren’t finding sustainable solutions then reconsider your approach.

High dose MSM may be raising ammonia and stressing your liver. Support detox with L-ornithine + aspartate (Aspartate helps the urea cycle push ammonia, L-ornithine alone only partly supports this), NAC (helps detoxify ammonia), hydration, and possibly reduce or pause MSM until symptoms ease and get liver and ammonia labs if it continues.
Thank you. I appreciate the help. I ordered the supplements you suggested. I’ll be Pausing the MSM until symptoms are under control.
I had the same issue, as the other commenter said LOLA helps but I also had to stop taking it for a while.
