Feeling like pure death - terrible body aches, congestion, lethargic. Anyone else?

  • Flu season is setting records already. Hit our household. Some of the worst chills and aches I’ve ever had. No fun at all. Good luck.

I woke up feeling sick on Monday, November 3rd (just a few weeks after I got my flu shot), had a positive flu-A test, then the flu turned into a sinus infection. While the cough is finally gone, my sinuses are still stuffy, and it's been two months!! I am beyond ready to feel normal again. Ugh.

Annnnnndd this is exactly why I don't get the flu shot anymore. Some of the worst flus I have had came immediately after a flu shot, just like what happened to you.

Honestly, the people I know who didn't get the shot had a much worse go with the flu; in my case, it's the effects of the sinus infection that are hanging on. Interestingly, the same damn thing happened to me last year, and began at the beginning of November, too. 🤷

    Save it for Next Door

lol not really a deep thinker here, folks

I’ve been dispensing Tamiflu and Paxlovid daily and my pharmacy is low volume

  • Flu A and COVID are everywhere right now.

  • We’ve had Flu A and Covid hit the house this week. The 3-1 tests are great.

where do you buy the 3-1 tests?

The st louis county library system is distributing them for free.

We got ours at CVS and Walgreens.

I got mine at Sam’s Club if you are a member

  • For those who don’t know - if someone is flu positive in your household you can get prescribed Tamiflu or Xofluza proactively to take to prevent you from getting the flu. Xofluza is the superior drug if you can get it, I’ve taken it twice and flu was gone within 48 hours fully, no joke. No weird side effects like Tamiflu either.

Xofluza is the SHIT. My son had it first. I woke up with symptoms, took it at 4pm, and within 24 hours I felt totally normal.

do you know what is the effectiveness of severe disease with those anti-virals?

I don’t know that right off, all I have is my personal experience. Tamiflu gave me such severe side effects I had to stop it and suffer for weeks, but Xofluza no joke I’ve been 100% symptom free within 48 hours each time I’ve taken it for flu. I’ve been hospitalized before for the flu FWIW. I do know for a fact Xofluza is much more effective than Tamiflu I just don’t know those numbers.

Holy shit you may have just saved my partners life. I’m having him call tomorrow asap for a prescription, thank you!!! And I hadn’t ever heard of Xofluza but now I’m kicking myself for not asking about because fuck man this flue is brutal.

  • Yuuuup. I wanna see if it’s flu but I don’t wanna go out anywhere because I feel so awful.

Edit- influenza a confirmed and yak this thing doesn’t not. Fuck. Around. It’s horrible and miserable. Please mask up, please wash your hands, PLEASE be safe!

don’t even bother, it’s much easier to doordash it and throw in some gatorade and soup with it

  • Yes - but have been dealing with it for 2+ weeks. Covid for me. People need to stop going out or mask if they’re sick - it’s so selfish.

  • i got it before xmas- only lasted 3 days for me but it was a DOOZY

i tried all the cold meds and mucinex liquid was most effective

did you get the flu shot? or was it covid

i’ve got 30 years of flu shots in me now

    What does this mean?

i’ve been getting a flu shot every year for 30yrs

Ohhhh got it, it really was that straightforward lol

  • Post holiday? This plague started after Thanksgiving. I work in a school and the amount of kids out sick for a week is wild.

  • I flew half way across the country to see family and friends and have been in bed the last 48 hours.

We did this too. Wore masks on the flights the way out there and back and since it’s been about 3 days since we got back praying we’re in the clear now and it worked.

  • Am in healthcare. So much tamiflu, paxlovid and antibiotics going out right now

  • Everyone in St. Louis right now! My wife is a telemed nurse and they have been slammed with calls everyday since Christmas. I'll tell you what she is telling everyone, Zyrtec, Sudafed and Flonase. Get well soon

  • Dealing with pre christmas stroke actually lol it sucks, but ive been in the hospital, so I've avoided the flu.

Woah that’s awful!! I hope you are doing okay now

Thank you. Went to hospital on the morning of 12/8. Misdiagnosed as a pinched nerve. Went to another that evening and found out I had a stroke.

Wishing you a speedy and full recovery. The brain is pretty amazing, the way it can rewire synapses around a brain injury.

Thank you! Thank you! Got another week to go and then I can go home!

Good to hear! So glad you went somewhere else to get a second opinion that night.

No kidding! Lucky to be alive! Barely alive now on hospital food but thats another story lol

Also I sent you a message, if thats okay?

    I hope you recover quickly!

Thank you so much! I appreciate you!

  • No just post holiday Sunday scary depression

  • mine was pre-holiday but yes--it's going around

  • At this point can we get a mega thread of this shit? I feel like these posts are constantly happening

  • Nope, I mask so I’m fine! But almost everyone I know who doesn’t has been sick at some point between Thanksgiving and now

People hate this one trick but those of us who do it know how well it works.

Same. I wear an N95 (3M Aura) at all times when I leave the house and I haven't been sick with an acute illness for years

The problem is when there's people in your household/family who don't. I wear N95s to work, shopping, any time I'm around people indoors. Both times I've gotten COVID it's been due to a small family gathering, the others were either asymptomatic or had mild sniffles. Me? Knocked on my ass for weeks, that's...that's why I mask, I have other health issues which mean I get hit way harder with this shit. And now my ex sent my kids over for Christmas with the sniffles, teenager swears it's allergies, I'm fairly certain it's not, given that the only environmental allergen that bugs me is mold, it's not really mold season, and now I have the sniffles, a sore throat, and a headache. Guess I'm DoorDashing a 3 in 1 test tomorrow... ugh. At least I got my flu shot early this year.

Ugh I’m sorry this is so difficult and frustrating! I hope you feel better soon. Yeah, most people are so reckless with this stuff. It’s awful.

Just think if people who were actually sick wore a mask if/when they went out.

Same here. They refuse to accept that masking is the appropriate thing to do and that it works.

    Inconvenient truth is inconvenient.

especially with the flu. It's exceptionally well in filtering it out, way better than with COVID.

I’m sure it depends on the particulars of the mask in question, but the most effective masks (respirators) are just as effective at blocking flu as they are at blocking COVID. A well-fitted n95, for instance, protects the wearer from at least 95% of airborne particles, regardless of what virus they’re carrying.

This is my favorite resource re: this topic! It is comprehensive and very well written/not too scientific/generally accessible: https://journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/cmr.00124-23

I mask and got sick after Thanksgiving and on xmas morning. It's hard working with a little kid that slobbers everywhere.

Yes absolutely, with kids in the mix it’s so hard. Keeping them safe effectively really has to be a whole community effort.

  • Congestion and body aches sounds like the flu.

  • Yep…whole family was sick all week. I think after one more good nights sleep, I’ll be good. Haven’t been sick in like 3 years, this one bout did me in.

  • Started a new job recently. First time in a while working full-time in-office and people just don't mind their manners and violate your personal space. Needless to say I picked up a nasty bug. Initially was Influenza A and it took me out for over a week and now I have COVID.

I found myself working with people that more or less believe COVID never happened or is some wild conspiracy to get the global population's DNA on a registry. I can't afford to be sick and bring it home to my family, but at the same time I can't afford to just not work and have no medical benefits. I guess I'll just have to "suck it up, buttercup" and continue going into work sick until I have benefits. Oh wait, I can't even take a day off. So how is that supposed to work?

The people here who are capable of rational thought, I applaud you. The mouth-breathers who refuse to take precautions and make like miserable for everyone else, I hope you have the day you deserve.

I wear a mask to work and have avoided getting sick, it’s well worth it. Maybe something to pick up during sick season ❤️ I find it worth the trouble

You say that as if I am not already wearing a mask.

Sorry I missed that part! That sucks that you still got sick despite masking damn…not fair at all

Idk what you wear so sorry if this is redundant but there is a great deal on 3M Auras on Amazon rn, everything checks out so they’re not counterfeit so if they seal on you well it’s worth the $35 https://a.co/d/hDpLtfC

Know anything similar with ear loops? I've been wearing vogmasks and they've been great but they recently went out of business.

Ear loop masks are not going to be as protective for the majority of people as n95s due to them not sealing as effectively for a lot of face shapes and the likelihood of gapping with certain movements (also because there are a LOT of counterfeits) but when I’m outdoors in light crowds like farmers markets I use WellBefore boat style earloops because they come in a variety of sizes and the pros have nose foam which helps. Just be aware that when people get sick while masking it is generally going to be in an ear loop so if you want to improve your seal try using them with ear savers or mask tape!

N95 is not exclusive of ear loop. Ear loop masks can be n95.

I’ve never seen a legitimate, Niosh approved N95 with ear loops.

    From the CDC website:

Signs that an N95 may be counterfeit: • Does not include all the required label markings on the FFR, as described above • NIOSH is spelled incorrectly • Has decorative fabric or other decorative add-ons (e.g., sequins) • Claims to be approved for children (NIOSH does not approve any type of respiratory protection for children) • The use of ear loops that do not use a fastener to connect them behind the head. A NIOSH-approved respirator would have a much more common set of two head bands (one of which goes over the crown of the head, and the other that sits at the base of the neck) or ear loops that are approved to use with a connecting fastener

    https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/2021-124/pdfs/2021-124.pdf

Q: Do N95 masks have ear loops or elastic headbands?

A: NIOSH-certified N95 masks have elastic headbands. This is important because the elastic headbands ensure a tighter fit and seal, creating a barrier between the mask and face. If your N95 has ear loops, it is not an N95!

    https://www.benco.com/benco-dental-u/faq/everything-you-want-to-know-about-n95-and-kn95-masks-but-were-afraid-to-ask/

Most N95s don’t have ear loops, but instead, they use two large elastic bands that wrap around your head (called “headbands”).

I’m not saying it’s impossible but I’m saying I’ve never seen a real one that was actually N95.

  • So far so good in our house. Get togethers with family the 24th- 26th.

  • Nah just seasonal depression

  • I figured it was the copious amounts of rum that I’ve been consuming. Shitballs!

  • Partner has the pukey-shits.

    Norovirus?

Who knows. We've all been eating the same things so I suspect noro or similar and not food poisoning but no one else feels bad so??? And I have no immune system because of autoimmune meds so by rights if it's noro I should be sick also. So confused.

We finally figured out that the pukey one here ate “the same soup” we all did, but…hours later…from the pot that was still sitting on the stove. Eeew.

Some people are delicate too. My partner has some kind of digestive issue that's undiagnosed but I could eat taco bell that's been left in a hot car for a day and not suffer any issues.

Ugh. That’s my dad. My mom always says he has an iron stomach. I’ve never even heard of him throwing up. And because he is never sick, he doesn’t believe in food safety. 🙄

  • Covid is making the rounds. Again.

  • Nah. This year I made the proper precautions.

Exercise, fresh air, and booze to kill the bacteria.

  • Y'all are sick because you don't care and spread it around like it's your job. JFC, have you all learned nothing?

Agreed, folks walk around my work hacking without even covering their mouth. Bruh, we learned this in kindergarten. And the ones who know they’re sick are like hey I’m sick! And I’m like why aren’t you even wearing a mask if you’re gonna come in??? Shrug. Every time I’ve gotten sick recently, I’m like 99% positive it’s my fellow coworkers and not customers.

You sound like you don't have a job or one that lets you take off sick.

For others, it literally is their job to spread it around. The problem is employers that insist on sick employees coming in or risking losing their jobs.

We have people that go to urgent care and get diagnosed with flu or Covid and then come to the pharmacy to pick up their meds hacking and sneezing all over the store and employees. Thanks my front end and the customers touching the shelves you sneezed on 60 seconds ago really want your germs

This is why we still have our plexiglass barriers up in the pharmacy and we sanitize after every Tamiflu and Paxlovid patient

i wonder if thats why people say they get the flu after getting vaccinated. Where people get the vaccinate is the single most congested point of infection that there is - pharmacy & doctors office.

No they haven’t. And the performative head scratching will continue as they all get heart attacks and strokes at 35 unfortunately

Is it unfortunate though? It seems hard earned as being that willfully ignorant takes some hard work and dedication, and is exactly what they were after.

Unfortunate in that they’ll be taking up a hospital bed and resources someone else needs but you’re not wrong!!

you are sick because you don’t care? that doesn’t even make sense.

Exactly. When they are sick they still go to work, the mall, out to dinner, etc. They don't care if others get sick.

They care that they're getting sick. They don't care that they're getting other people sick. There is no understanding that they may have gotten someone sick who is then going to get them sick later.

Nor care that they may be killing others. My dad got infected from meeting someone here in town who claimed they had “just a cold” when they showed up to the meeting. That “just a cold” gave him asthma, my mom was very close to being admitted, and my grandma was hospitalized here for almost 3 weeks and almost died. “Just a cold” to many is deadly. It infuriates me people who go in public and go on vacation while knowingly sick.

were your parents vaccinated for the flu? just curious.

It wasn’t the flu. It was human metapneumovirus which most people just think is a really bad “cold”. Doctors offices usually don’t test for it but they’ll test you if you get hospitalized.

I've got a cold rn (pcr Covid test was negative). The one reason I will go out [masked up] in public for the duration is that I have to get my blood cleaned out three days a week and can't miss those appointments without risking hospitalization.

there are so many variables not being considered here, but sure bud

edit: guess this guy called me a “plague rat” but i just got sick because i wait tables. i didnt get sick because i “dont care”. i’ve been home every day since i got sick, and ive lost about 500 bucks in wages because of it. and i got a flu shot!

    Yall who?

    Yalln's that are sick.

    You keeping tabs on us?

  • We haven’t even “done” Christmas yet and spent yesterday in the ER

  • Swept through my house and (not exaggerating) everyone we know, about 2-3 weeks ago. After a course of steroids and antibiotics there’s still lingering effects a week later. Those that got it early seemed to take 3+ weeks to be back to 100%.

The internet is saying it’s adenovirus. Flu and Covid tests were negative for everyone I know.

  • Super sore throat, weak. No fever though and no congestion. I'm wondering if its covid.

Sounds like it. Last time I had it it also gave me insane sneezing fits. It’s an incredibly agile and smart adaptable virus so it can be almost any of the symptoms at this point. Much much smarter than we are, that’s for sure.

  • I had the pre holiday plague and had to skip out on family Christmas 😭

  • Bloat. I can't do it anymore. 52 year old

  • I got it before Christmas… body aches, chills, fever, fatigue, congestion, headache. It was terrible and I’m still getting over it

  • Mine started today, not sure if it’s flu or Covid yet 🤧🤒 achey, chills, feels like I swallowed glass, coughing…

  • I had something a few weeks ago. I felt horrible, but feel much better now. But the the cough will not go away. Frustrating.

  • I just got over covid. Took me about 10 days to get back to feeling "normal ."

  • Already ran through the family before holidays. Sorry for you it was a bitch.

  • Had some serious congestion and body aches last week. NyQuil for a couple days. Thought the flu had landed but seems it was just a cold.

  • Christmas just starts on the 25th. There are 12 days of it. Why are people done with Christmas already? It just started

  • It’s probably Covid, aka the ongoing pandemic that surges after every major holiday. Wear a mask and go get PCR tested at urgent care.

I'm going to be that guy...COVID is real, it's an ongoing infectious disease concern, however it most certainly is NOT a pandemic at this point.

Flu, RSV, Entro/Rhino, these all likely to have a greater impact.

If you look at data from BJC: https://diorama.wustl.edu/weekly-report ... you'll see that, if you're feeling like poop, it's likely something else rather than COVID at the moment.

It's not a pandemic because ....checks notes..... No one is testing for it on a large scale. It's still pervasive, but people attribute it to many other things and never test.

Wait until you hear how many people don't test for Entro/Rhino, Flu, RSV, etc....

% positivity is sufficient for understanding trends.

Why would it not be considered a pandemic when levels haven’t significantly dipped since 2021? Just because the emergency phase was declared over and people don’t test or try to prevent getting it doesn’t make the pandemic over or infection any less. Trump was the one who put forth the “if you don’t test it goes away!” idea and unfortunately Biden ran with it. Not testing and not tracking does not make a pandemic not a thing. It is a disease that is circulating globally on a large scale level. That’s a pandemic. https://www.pmc19.com/data/index.php

A pandemic is defined as explosive or exponential growth. Endemic is a disease that persists in the population. COVID isn't pandemic because it transitioned to endemic a long time ago.

The distinction is important because pandemic implies a massive surge in healthcare demand, while endemic does not.

Yes, exactly, it's exhausting trying to explain epidemiology. Ever since COVID there are all these self proclaimed armchair infectious disease specialists spouting completely bogus info.

You don't see me showing up at a high-rise office tower project telling the engineer how he calculated all the building loads incorrectly because I Googled some shit on the Internet.

Whatever dude, call it what you want. It’s still persisting at high levels year round with massive spikes and waves several times a year. But this pedantic bs about semantics is just another way people like you dismiss any sense of responsibility regarding being aware of the reality of the disease, it’s after effects, and the consequences of being an active part of the chain of transmission. If people calling it endemic still gave a shit about actually preventing people from getting the disease that would be something but none of y’all ever do. Just another way to erase reality and go “back to normal” like good little capitalist cogs.

OK bro. I didn't say COVID wasn't a problem, I gave the definition of endemic vs. pandemic. Disease can be endemic and still be a problem without being a pandemic. MOST disease we care about is endemic.

Show me on the doll where COVID touched you.

Have fun with your endless repeat infections that slowly but surely silently destroy your immune system, increase your risk of dementia, stroke and heart attack, sweaty 💅🏻

All infectious diseases (including endemic ones) come with risks, you can't prevent getting infected eventually. Get vaccinated, cover your mouth when sneezing, and wash your hands regularly...the very same shit you'd do to help avoid getting/spreading Flu or RSV or Entro/Rhino. There isn't a conspiracy. Far more people will die from Flu this year than COVID.

I tested positive for Covid Christmas Day. It was so mild I didn’t need to get help for it, nor did my kids or spouse. It could easily be underreported right now.

Yeah the stats are all way lower than reality because no one gets tested, reports positives, etc. wastewater is the most accurate measurement but they stopped widely collecting and publishing that too because of lack of funding and desire to make the numbers look better.

Yes, of course, this is why percent of test positivity is used.

its not, its predominantly Flu A

i tested and it was actually influenza a. so, not exactly

mine supposedly wasn’t- i took 2 covid tests and both neg, neither expired- but i couldn’t smell or taste anything so….

Unfortunately rapid tests are only about 40% accurate and even with serial testing (testing at different times of day over two to three days at certain times) only marginally raises that. Best practice is to get a PCR from urgent care so that you can get paxlovid and hopefully avoid long covid/get through it quicker if you do have it.

well i’m all better now so i think ill live

the smell thing i didn’t even realize until my sniffer started working again yesterday. i need to take the trash out omg my house stinksssss

  • Ya, unfortunately all of the Metro East Hospitals are full with people who gathered during Flu/Covid season. Yesterday Memorial West ER was backed up 100 patients and Memorial east was almost as bad. People with unrelated health emergencies died yesterday do to all the Covid/Flu cases taking up ER beds. So sad.

Another died this morning too. 😢 Memorial East is better but they are currently out of beds with Covid/Flu patients backed up into the waiting room.

  • No I don't leave the house from November to April too cold 😂

  • Started this morning. Just coughing and feeling yucky so far.

  • Flu is going around, seemingly the entire country

  • Wife is laid up.... typical flu stuff... nose... throat... chest...

Knock on wood im good so far.

She volunteered at an event Sunday last week giving out toys and there were 100s there.

She went down Christmas eve late. 72 hour incubation.

    I'm clear so far...

Flu has hit the Chicago Besrs hard. 6 guys out of game with flu.

  • Yep. That's me. Just got back from urgent care, and everything came back negative so far...waiting for further tests. This was around the time I got covid in '19 before we all knew what it was, so that's always encouraging

  • Got my flu gifted to me on Christmas Day. Santa can bite me.

  • Around thanksgiving I thought I had the flu but turned out to be covid. Rocked me good for a week and took another 2 to feel totally better.

  • Yep. Yesterdays started feeling shitty. Congestion, lethargic, headache from Hell. No fevers thankfully but slept a lot today. Christmas was questionable since my sister in law and nephew had the flu previously. I’ve probably gotten something from them, but I know it’s been going around like wildfire around here. It suck but tis the season! Hope everyone starts feeling better soon! Back to work tomorrow for 2.5 days.

    “They had the flu”

“I’ve probably gotten something from them”

    “Back to work tomorrow”

    GROSS

As I stated I’m the only one in office on my team so no one else here to “pass it to” and I’m also WEARING A MASK so gross? Doubtful. Im being considerate of others while I’m dealing with a cold.

Your original comment didn’t say you were the only one in the office

And thank you for wearing a mask because most people can’t be bothered, but the thought of anyone being in public with the flu is gross to me sorry

Nope it didn’t, but I clarified that above

You’re still feeling crappy but headed back to work tomorrow? So now we know why this keeps going around and around and around.

You realize that people just can't not work when they want to? Like at Walmart, you can only miss 4 days in 183 days before getting fired. Sick? Too bad. Car trouble? Bad weather? Injured? Too bad.

And if you don't work, you can't pay bills? Can't pay your electric bill? Too bad, we're cutting off the power.

Yes, obviously I realize that. She says above she’s in an office. Don’t act like millions of people (not saying her but millions) just keep going back into the office when they can work from home or use a sick day too. You’re missing the point.

Ok whatever but then why do we have to keep having these stupid posts IS ANYONE ELSE SICK??

Don’t be that person. I didn’t include im the only one on my team in office next week so I’m not around anyone else, but gotta do what’s gotta be done. Soo yeah.

Well, forgive me for being “that person,” but you also said “Tis the season” in regards to it as if passing around sicknesses is inevitable, so one might see how that sounded.

Well yea, everyone passes it on. I’m sure I’m passing it on to my son and husband being in the same house. I mean sickness can’t really be not passed on. I chose to stay in the house the past couple of days to not pass on to randoms but again, can’t control other people and what they do but me personally, I’d prefer to not pass it on to others

Sorry for being an asshole here but please tell me you are wearing a mask at least? or is that too inconvenient.

  • Nothing yet... so now I've jinxed it and everyone's gonna celebrate New Years with the flu :p

  • Get ready for it to last a minimum of two weeks, mostly likely three.

  • [deleted]

That’s not a thing. Old wive’s tale, like “don’t go out in that, you’ll catch a cold!”

  • Mine was Thanksgiving, but yes it's going around. Hearing Minn, Wisconsin, Illinois are dealing hard with it that their limiting hospital visitors

  • Yes. I and another family member have it.

  • We got lucky, everyone got sick first couple weeks of December….probably got it from us indirectly, these things get around this time of year.

  • Was dealing with it before, a cold, ear infection (third one this year), and sinus infection.

  • i tested positive for the flu the day after xmas - grab a covid test with other flus on it, it’s going around!!! i’ve been dead since the 26

  • This was me a couple weeks ago. It sucked.

  • Flu A at our house. One person gets over it and someone else gets it. We've been dealing with this for 3 weeks. And we're all vaccinated...

  • Wife and 2 of 3 kids got it. Sucks for sure. Just awaiting it to hit me next.

  • Yes, just tested positive with Flu A yesterday. Humidifier, inhaler, and prescription cough syrup for me. Hope everyone feels better soon.

    Where did you test?

    SSM urgent care.

  • Flu and strep in our house

  • The flu going around is fucking miserable. Was no longer contagious in time for Christmas. I’ve still not recovered though. I’ve got maybe 40% of the energy I had before.

  • Don’t tell me this shit! I just had one of my children come in and say “Daddy I sick”

  • I caught the flu around Thanksgiving. I didn't bother with the tamiflu since I didn't think it would be very severe since I had the flu shot. It lingered so long and then I caught a cold. I was sick for about a month! It was horrible.

  • Been sick af the last 48hrs and it hit out of nowhere. Starting to ease up this evening it seems but haven’t been this ill in awhile.

  • Had covid the week before christmas…it’s going around!

  • I'm on day 15 and still not back to normal. I need a holiday redo.

  • Yup. Minor stuff day after, full blown yesterday and today

  • They are in LACounty. Viruses go around everywhere

  • Too much holiday dip

  • Yup, add extremely sure throat to it as well. 3rd year in a row being sick on Christmas.

I did get a flu shot this year, good not opt for the COVID vac.

  • Passing around colds but nothing too bad really

  • We are dealing with 1 suspected case of food poisoning in the house (thankful for activated charcoal!). Nobody else is sick, and everyone else ate the food in question HOURS earlier than the sick one did.

  • Flu B, all 6 of us. Early in the season for flu B so it’s gonna be a bad season.
