There were people who objected to the rule itself. I’m one of those who objected, and I think leaving oreganos as an option rather than a requirement is the most objectively fair option.
Adding a restriction on everybody merely to satisfy the preferences of a portion would feel wrong.
Having it as a requirement would literally be saying a lobster is only valid with oregano— in effect that’s telling the whole sub that their contributions are worth literally less than nothing if they don’t cite their sources.
I do not envy the mods the task of making these decisions, because they’ll literally never please everybody.
No matter what they decide people will complain, and ultimately they just have to do the best they can to maintain the community.
This decision seems entirely fair and sensible to me.
My philosophy is always: minimum restriction is the best way to mod— only hard necessities should be enforced as rules (Reddit tos, and keeping the sub on topic)
But to summarize from my perspective as someone who actually wants to post oregano-less lobsters: if I’m donating my time to make a lobster it’s really discouraging if I’m then told “hey you didn’t post the original, so we don’t even want to see your joke. In fact we’re gonna delete it because we don’t think anyone should have to see a joke without sources”
Yeah, you’re donating your time to make a joke. So take the extra 2 seconds to post the damn original.
The only people they aren’t pleasing is you because you’re too lazy to spend a couple seconds to prevent someone else having to waste their time later finding it.

I personally think an appropriate compromise is to require them for any artist work (like comics) and leave them optional for random text (like Twitter posts). It just doesn't seem right to leave artists uncredited.

There are a few good reasons to include oreganos.
Seeing oregano helps eliminate the possibility of people scamming with added letters rather than true lobsters. It’s extremely rare for people to scam that way here, not common enough of a problem to necessitate a supplemental rule applying to all posts.
Requiring an oregano would help cut back on repost bot traffic, because bots can reply to the picture prompt. You can get the same effect with simple text prompts asking if the content is OC, r/prequelmemes uses a bot this way and it was well received.
People like seeing oregano. Cool! But that’s just a subjective thing, and some people’s preferences should factor in to community etiquette but they definitely shouldn’t override broader community freedoms.
The fact is the majority of the crowd hoping to see this oregano law are leaning on point three, which is ably far the least compelling of the reasons I’ve heard.
Wanting to restrict other peoples memeing because you “like it better when there’s an orange” is not actually fair in a broader sense and you know that it’s not.
Ultimately, the benefits of not requiring oregano are obvious and I find them a lot more compelling than the reasons for the rule.
Less work for the mods, in terms of enforcement. Fewer rules generally means less busy work.
Greater freedom for the whole community, to post how they like.
Readers are still totally free to downvote or ignore lobsters they don’t like for whatever reason, including a failure to etiquette. Wanting to exert further pressure or control over how people meme is extremely busy and odd behavior.

so we add the rule, apply it retroactively, and instead of just not applying it retroactively, we just remove the rule?

That actually makes a lot of sense for most people. I think feeling strongly one way or the other is probably an outlier kind of feeling.
Majority of the sub almost certainly doesn’t care. A large minority wants it to be a rule and a smaller minority is begging it not to be rule.
