I’m new to the area and have been suffering from hip and lower back pain. I’ve done PT for a year and seen chiropractors but nothing helps. I also went to a pain management doctor where I used to live and I was rushed and given a shot in my hip that did nothing. Any recommendations? Thanks new neighbors!

  • We've been going to Reconstructive Orthopedics at Virtua, specifically with Dr. Hodde, and can't say enough good things about him. That said he is a non-op doctor focused more on conservative treatment. They do have other doctors there who focuses more on surgery but we haven't reach that point yet to need one.

Thank you. I’m trying to avoid surgery as much as I can

Yup I can't say enough good things about the two of them. They took a lot of time teaching my mom what's going on (which is FAR easier said than done given her history hah) and giving all the possible solutions. Our bench is Hodde for Spine and Holmes for Knee (I don't know if he's hip... I know he does Knee) and both are more conservative with their treatments. I never felt like either one pushed for the 'high margin' or surgery options when speaking about it -- it was always more about like "Hey here are your options"

Hi there. I’m in a similar boat needing a back/hip ortho. I personally have urinary problems that are not resolving as expected and my PT is concerned bc I have an old back injury I never got treated. My dr and PT want to rule out nerve damage. Do you think he would be able to help? If I ultimately needed a surgery I do want to be told that

The back/hip thing is throwing me off a bit. I know in our case we have someone seeing Dr. Hodde for Back and in my case, Dr. Whal for Hip. I don't know if you can have one doctor to see both but maybe! I know Jill Marple is a general all around physical medicine doctor (that means conservative first).

That said, everyone at Reconstructive Orthopedic/Virtua Orthopedic has been great. It's hard for me to think of a bad experience we had.

If it truly is a nerve damage suspicion, they'll likely send you to Neurology to get an EMG to get shocked. I just got one with Dr Robert Sammartino in Sewell who's been very nice, with the referral from Reconstructive Orthopedic. That said, Dr. Sammartino is moving to Jefferson in Jan 2026. Reconstructive is able to do EEGs too (specifically, Dr. Marple) but they're backed up.

You know I’ve been really hoping that it wouldn’t actually be damage bc it was from an assault that I hadn’t even considered what would come next if my tests did come back with problems. Guess I got calls to make tomorrow

I’m sorry. I hope you get to the bottom of it. But, and I’m sure you know this, you can’t ever out hide your pains, you have to face it head on. So go make those calls and you got this 🙂

Oh I definitely learned that this year. If you don’t give yourself a break, your body forces you to take one. Thank you!

Reconstructive Orthopedics is a great practice. I've seen doctors for three different body parts there.

  • Docs at Rothman took great care of my knee. Great place, and they are the docs for Philly sports teams.

  • If you’re a woman over 40 it’s probably perimenopause or menopause and you need supplements and estrogen.

I’ve been in surgical menopause for 12 years and am on HRT. Not sure if that could be related?

  • James Purtill. Rothman institute. Greentree rd Marlton. Very conservative. Won't operate unless he has to. Did both of mine 15 years ago.
