• No fucking shit. Gambling destroys societies and the national legalization of it has been a catastrophe

  • Gee, if only there was some way we could have predicted this.

Is there a market for that?

  • There also started taking predictions on changes to the frontline in Ukraine. Since there is a reporting delay, some soldiers already earned good money from that

  • On the other hand, some people hit a 50x on whether the press secretary's speech would go over a minute. If you're a public figure, why even bother trading on historic and high-profile outcomes when you can make yourself an inside bet on whether you'll say "nuclear"?

The amount of money you make depends on how many suckers you can get to bet against you though, so for a really big score it needs to be something high profile.

  • The lengths that major news outlets have to go to both-sides every stupid thing is hilarious. "Critics argue that swallowing sharp shards of glass will damage the esophagus and stomach."

"Online gambling will ruin players, embolden corruption and warp perspective on current events" vs "No it won't"

  • Asteroid. NOW.

  • I hate prediction market people but I gotta be honest this feels like the exact same issue as defense industry stocks so I don't rly think this a new problem

Ehhh I don’t think traditional investments are quite the same as literal casino-style betting, psychologically speaking. And the level of individual policymakers and staff the barrier of entry to corrupt shit is a lot lower than when you had to own large amounts of corporate stock shares
