The literal sun goddess and a magic rune master

ama dashes, swings her sword, shoots a blast out a mirror (I know the mirror is in her lore and should be incorporated), has some aura circle under her feet wow so amazing

No sun no flames, no fire barely any light

Odin leaps, throws a spear with a bland effect and animation, gets a little shield. and his 1 decent looking ability is his ult.

all of his abilities should be showcasing his magic prowess. Doesnt even have raven abilities or shapeshifting

  • Odin's always felt like one of the biggest wastes of potential in the entirety of Smite alongside Hades. It took his rework to give him the spear throw, which is the only thing tying him to his mythological counterpart.

He could have summoned the various animals associated with him like his ravens, wolves, or his horse. He could have been a stance switcher switching between a magical ranged stance and a melee stance. He could have applied various debuffs onto his enemies with spells and incantations. But nope, they give him a really uninspired leap, an uninspired shield, and an ult that feels like it should belong to some other mythological figure.

didn't his rework also remove the vision that was supposed to be him using Hugin and Munin? So we traded one accuracy for another, then dropped the pulse that mimics Gungnir's inability to miss.

I love playing Odin and I enjoy his kit. But I do agree it's such a shame we don't have more of his lore involved and it's all just focused on the part of him that's a fierce warrior with some flavor text + minor effects and vfx for magic. I hope he's one of the few gods that gets an Artio-level aspect and he gets to be a midlaner for it. So you can chose between angry war god and trickster wise mage.

I can barely remember what Odin was even like before his rework because he was that forgettable. I think I played him pre-rework once, unintentionally, in an Assault game and I found him so incredibly boring that I just never considered using him ever again.

It's a real shame that Odin ended up the way he is, especially when you have some really creative Warriors like Wukong whose kit is honestly a great translation of Myth Wukong into 4 simplified abilities and Cu Chulainn whose stance switch and rage mechanics make him quite fun to play and also reflect his myths rather nicely.

Don't even get me started on Smite's version of Hades, though. I could go on and on about how much of a waste Hades is.

This been a while but afai remember on release. 1 was the same, 2 wasn't a shield but an att speed buff, 3 was a spear swipe around him and his ult was just a cage, that's it.

    Birds of Wisdom - Passive

Odin's ravens scout an increased radius around himself, doubling his minimap vision radius and giving visibility to enemies within that radius

    Odin's Shout

    Gungnir's Might

This power, while used passively, provides 20/30/40/50/60 protection from physical attacks and 5/10/15/20/25 HP5. Upon activation of this power, he does a speeding melee attack that does 70/115/160/205/250 (+100% of your physical power) physical damage and slows all enemies around him by 30% for 2 seconds, but he loses the passive bonus while on cooldown. Source

Jesus this must have been ages ago. I started playing in 2018 and back then he already had his shield, jump and gungnirs might as a spin attack around him kit.

I was there, Gandalf. I was there 3,000 years ago with this kit.

The wall would trap everyone inside, including teammates.

and his passive gave him vision nearby through walls if I remember it correctly. Which represented his knowledge /vision given from hugin and munin.

Early Odin and loki were kidna similar in a sense b4 reworks. Both would just stop low elo games and then disappeared in the higher games.

Loki's rework did him some justice I'll give him that. What I kinda don't like is in Smite 2, they gave his second ability the old decoy animation, and while it's a nice throwback to an OG ability, it gets rid of the connection to Loki's myth that Smite 1's rework animation gave it with Loki in chains having poison dripped into his face.

Yea I loved that myth callback in that animation when I first noticed it. It's a display of his suffering that he's probably fueled by for these fights, with the small amount of storytelling Smite does have.

He was the same except his 3 was just him spinning his spear around doing a low to decent amount of damage and slow.

Odin is an old design and while Lol and Dota have so much more flavorable designs, I think that early smite was much more limited in design due to its gameplay nature.

Odin's old passive was actually totally busted. Double vision range meant he never needed wards and could not be ganked, but was also very useless late game.

Technically the unmissable spear still exists when you escape his ult

SMH why couldn’t they just give him sick abilities like everyone else, he deserves better fr

intresting idea I have for odin. I think you give his ult the Hades treatment and give him a single use enhanced ability while within the ult.

His leap when landing within ring of spears will a small amount of damage all within the zone and Maybe trembling them for a second.

His shield will be consumed to repair the health of walls/add more defense to them, but he will not get the shield.

And using his 3 and fully changing it and hitting a target with the projectile will mark them and his ring of spears will fall and turn into the projectile spears and fly at the target dealing high damage.

  • ama dashes

Her dash is not a simple dash. Before that she throws a silencing beam of light infront of her. She silences with that light beam then dashes.

    swings her sword

It's a Katana... And it's the Kusanagi... The sword gifted to her by Susano'o, one of the 3 imperial regalia...

has some aura circle under her feet wow so amazing

Her Aura is both to show her divine authority of leadership, as well as the way the devs used her Jewel.

No sun no flames, no fire barely any light

Amaterasu is not the flame Goddess. She is the Sun but in a more "light/radiance" way. That is why she's not shooting people with a Sun like Hou Yi.

Every single attack of hers IS based on her light. Her passive, her aura, her mirror, her dash, AND her ultimate ALL weaponize her light.

Also worth noting Amaterasu was the first of her pantheon and was very noticeably crafted with a lot of love, detail, and care for that time in the game

  • First time I ever imagined Odin with Wukongs 3 bird lol

  • Lowk i feel like alot of warriors are unispired, maybe out of the mere existence of them being warriors, like it makes sense if u are creating a mage with grandiose abilities.

yeah warriors are my most disliked role purely because they are all so generic. I do miss old vamana, an ugly baby in the middle of buff men in armor

  • I totally agree with you on Odin. He's one of my favorite mythological characters and one of my most played gods across both games. I think they leaned too heavily into the stereotypical viking warrior king aesthetic for him which is pretty well covered by Thor already, and forgotten about his obsession with magic, runes, fate etc. I really hope they bring back his Raven Warlock skin-- If you ask me that should be his default look, or at least some of those elements should be incorporated into his base skin.

raven warlock gives me an internal power boost whenever I use it. It's such a good skin and I truly hope that becomes his classic skin.

  • I disagree on Ama. There are already quite a few sun gods in Smite. There's only so much of a gods identity they can cramp into a kit, and I'm glad instead of generic "sun" themes they chose to focus on her three sacred treasures instead.

Odin I can't really argue with. He's always been the go to of "doesn't really reflect their lore" kits.

I'd argue Hades is the at the top of the "Not representative of their myth counterpart" of Smite Gods. At least Odin's rework gave him the Gungnir throw. Hades is literally just random World of Warcraft dark mage #14, you could change Hades' name to some other random ass God of Evil or Fear or whatever and it wouldn't make a difference because his kit is just some purple vfx.

The only thing tying him to myth Hades is the fact that they redesigned his scepter so it looks like a Bident. They didn't actually give him any abilities about his Bident, nor did they give him his Helmet of Darkness/Invisibility, they turned that into an item. He has no abilities involving souls or commanding the dead even though he is literally the ruler of the entire Greek afterlife.

Wait until you hear about Susano'o not being a storm deity.

  • Bro I actually adore when someone says things like "you know. Ama? The literal sun goddess?"

Homie do YOU realize there's a sun god in every mythology? Apollo is a sun god. Ra is a sun god. Sol is a sun goddess. Hou yi, khepri, olorun are all arguably sun gods/sun god adjacent.

I totally get the idea of Character X is actually not very thematic to their respective god and isn't represented well. For example Thanatos being the god of PEACEFUL death would never be seen on a battlefield. He doesn't have a scythe. Doesn't look like a grim reaper figure. Doesn't wear a mask. Thanatos in smite is not representative of Thanatos the Greek Diety.

But just saying "X god is literally the god of X!" Is shallow when we're talking about a game featuring many mythologies all of whom probably have different gods/esses in the exact same position as another pantheon.

Reminds of a post I saw when ama first came out (funny enough it was about ama) talking about how Ama should actually be the strongest character in the game because in mythology she's one of that pantheons like top leaders or whatever. That's just not how games work.

Yeah and all of their kits were well done. In my opinion ama's was not.

Yes I know ive played this game long enough to know what all those gods are

  • You do know that kits have to be condensed and made with varying levels of depth so they can have characters in the roster that are both complex and simple right?

If every sun god was calling down beams of light from the sky it would be repetative and boring.

  • This is my issue with most warriors honestly. They feel so bland, but with the two example you mentioned here I think leaning to much into that would make the god feel magical/int based instead of phys/str

That’s likely why they’re designed that way?

  • Amaturasu is one of my all-time favorite gods. I routinely slap with her in Assault mode and would be devastated if she changes.

  • I think Amaterasu is pretty cool and the aura is a very unique ability. I wouldn't be opposed to some flashier light/sun themed effects on her abilities to drive home that she is a sun goddess though.

Odin I fully agree on; I think if there is any god left in Smite/Smite 2 that deserves the Wukong or Ao Kuang treatment (where they put the current kit on a different god and rework the original entirely), it's Odin.

  • Making amaterasu directly linked to fire would be too expected. Too uninspired

Her focus was on the mirror

    What focus?

She has one ability focused on the mirror. Nothing else. To say her stance is mirror focused is inaccurate.

That'd be like saying Odin's raven shield showcases his iconography with ravens. It doesn't. A purple bubble put around you with a raven sound isn't a good focus of it.

  • odins shield is ravens, no?

It's just a basic shield with some raven sound effects and the name of the ability having the word "raven" in it. Nothing else about the ability involves ravens.

well yeah but its just a shield that explodes with a little raven animation attached

  • I LOVE ODIN PLEASE DONT TOUCH

  • It felt like for a while in Smite 1's god design they designed kits and themes before picking what God it would go to. Ama being the first Shinto release felt like they just wanted a Samurai.

Odin has long been one of the most boring gods in the game, I don't care that there's been times where he's been very good but just purely design wise he's boring both from the perspective of being Odin and just from a gameplay standpoint he's got one combo and nothing else to tie his gameplay

Warriors/Bruisers have always been my favorites in all MOBAs, I like dealing okay damage while staying alive and being annoying, it's why I like Position 3/4 in Dota and why Solo is my go to in Smite.

Odin has long been one of the most boring gods in the game, I don't care that there's been times where he's been very good but just purely design wise he's boring both from the perspective of being Odin and just from a gameplay standpoint he's got one combo and nothing else to tie his gameplay

As a fellow Arachne main this is funny to me

  • Odins 3 is kinda mid. It would be cool if it was a damage ability instead of a stun. Maybe like a quick circle ability focused around Odin, so he could jump in then do a little circle for extra damage after the bird bomb.

  • Amaterasu is one of the designs that most take inspiration from mythology. She was the first Japanese god and Ajax constantly geeked out about her. There was a reason he was known for wearing the an Ama hoodie. Her kit is full of references and details, you don't necessarily need to be shooting out fire and burning things to be a sun god. Matter of fact there are already gods like that in the game, if anything it would make her less unique and less accurate to her mythology.

  • Eh, I think Odin was alright. Norse mythology is somewhat more grounded in just about every interpretation. I think of games like God of War Ragnarok and AC Valhalla and Odin is just kind of a powerful dude with a spear. I think Odin was fine.

Amaterasu, I guess but she plays super fun and actually looks and sounds great so I genuinely don't care.

  • I have been playing a bit of LoL lately and I have to admit most of their kits are amazing and full of mechanics, going back to smite feels sad because imho the way smite plays is way more fun and immersive

  • Wait until you try Izanami, a goddess of death that throws sickles, gets invisible and throws more sickles.

Yeah I think Hirez had to use less thought on a lot of kits due to their lack of funding and dev team compared to a game like league that has a ton of resources

I mean obviously some characters need to be boring and id rather it be someone like Izanami than more known names.

Hopefully they do her some justice with the aspect though

  • I'm still mad that they made Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi a katana instead of a, you know, tsurugi.

That, and Amaterasu's yellow samurai cosplay looks so bad. If only there were better colours she is strongly associated with in lore...

  • Could be worse, could be AMC or Bakasura levels of boring.

  • This is the reason i liked Odin from GoW Ragnarok. He's supposed to be an old man, fighter and warrior, yes but a know it all. His main thing is sacrifice for knowledge, an eye for Mimir's water, stabbed and hanged himself to the world tree to see the runes. His Ravens are called Thought and Memory. He's supposed to know the past through Mimir's, the present through his ravens and anticipate the future through runes.

He's a mischieavous wizard with a spear that doesn't miss.

  • That’s what I was hoping with Smite 2. Not just reskin, but a ground up substantial re-work of the game and the gods. Imagine having more than 4 abilities as a default or being able to choose what abilities you can use in game. Aspects were a step in the right direction. But still not bold enough.

  • I've been saying for years Ama needs a sword beam like Link in LoZ with the Master Sword full power/health

  • Don’t care about Odin because I think his kit is solid outside of being a little boring

Ama though, I thought she could’ve really waited until they could rework more of her kit. She was my first mastery 10 in S1 and I don’t think I really played her much for the next seven years. I tried to revisit her a handful of times but she just doesn’t have the juice unless her items are busted

I think her and Medusa are two gods I think suffer too heavily from body blocks. On top of that, she has so many conditions for her damage it’s much easier to just play someone else. Even among AA gods, Ama never was my go to

  • I agree Amaterasu has a great fun kit but it doesn't fit her. I wish they incorporated more fiery things than just a girl with a sword.

  • This applies to the entire roster lol. Smite has terribly basic and insipid kits.

  • SMITE does that with a lot of gods I feel. Look how boring and uninspired Loki is.

  • Ive been playing Smite since 1 was in beta. Odin was always just "okay". Odins combo is very easy to avoid/dodge. Oh no his 3 slows then stun. The jump takes 2 buisness days to get off the map then come down. His shield? Yeah it's great I wont lie. But you never get the damage from it since as I just said his jump is easy and you almost always use the shield instead of just using the 2 alone. Ama? I honestly dont play her. Never forget Pearl Harbor
