I've been trying to train some amiibos so I can play against them (since my friends aren't really into SSBU), but I always end up training them the wrong way. I want them to be good sparring partners for me, not for amiibo tournaments or amiibo vs amiibo fights. Most videos recommend giving spirits to amiibos so they get certain abilities and become harder to beat. Is using spirits actually necessary for making them challenging? Personally it feels a bit like cheating to make them stronger that way, but I'm not sure if that’s just me. What's the best way to train them if what I want is an amiibo that puts up a real fight against a human player?

  • Yeah, a spiritless amiibo will never be good enough to put up a decent match against a person who knows the characters moveset, and has good fundamentals. Sure, they can do unexpected things and pull a fast one on you every once in a while, but it doesn't change anything about the fact that a real person has had the ability to come up with actual strategies for years. Amiibos don't understand advantage, disadvantage, ledge trapping, neutral, etc. That's why spirits are used. Because they make those stray hits the amiibo land that much more punishing. Even some pros have difficulty dealing with well built amiibo. Super armor, auto heal, or just having busted attack and defense stats make it even.

  • There’s a whole Discord server built around training amiibos. It’s far more in depth if you want the amiibo to be a strong fighter instead of just a roided out stat stick.
