I’m entirely in the crew of “would be fun to play in smash” although I sometimes am in the crew of “this series represented should at least have its villain playable too” but all the time I am both.
Yeah, throw in more villains. Ridley and K. Rool are good, but megman(either Dr. Wiley or Sigma from X) and sonic(I guess either Shadow, or Eggman) needs their villains playable.
That's perfectly fine, but I still can't deny that even if Sonic had a more representative moveset that's fun to play, two characters would be too limiting to represent that franchise.
Give Zelda Pig Ganon (and also give Ganondorf more sword moves but keep him "big chunky melee fighter"), give the Mario sub-franchises King Boo and Kamek, and give Star Fox Leon.
I personally wish Ganondorf would go the opposite direction. My favorite Ganondorf move of all time was the boot up smash from Brawl and Smash 4, and him using the sword for his smash attacks in Ultimate felt like he just moved a bit away from the Falcon part of him and more toward a new Ike part of him.
What I’d ultimately like to see is him just be a slow, brawly mage that hits like a truck. Give him a float like Peach. Give him a new neutral special that’s an energy ball that can be hit back and forth like a tennis ball. There are plenty of things that could work for a down special. I kind of like his side special as it is.
him using the sword for his smash attacks in Ultimate felt like he just moved a bit away from the Falcon part of him and more toward a new Ike part of him.
If CDi counts, why not Morshu? Popular among meme lovers, opens up interesting gimmick ideas, could genuinely be fun to play, and imagine getting hit with "Come back when you're a little, MMMMM, richer!" after you get combo'd by the guy
I want characters in Smash because I personally like them or their franchise
Relevance in their franchise only matters to me when I'm talking about what is most likely to happen
Like, my most wanted Mario character in Smash is probably Vivian but I also recognize how unlikely that is, so I say that out of the Mario characters that can reasonably expected to be in a Smash game the character I want in the most is probably Waluigi
On the other hand I would like Octoling in the game, not because I like the particular character, but because Splatoon is cool and I'd like to see more of it represented in Smash
That's kinda why I'm more involved in mods and fangames for my platform fighter fix (personal favorites being Smash Crusade and its forks). They're unbound by the corporate politics that limits "what's likely".
The reason for that is because Link in Smash isn't supposed to be BotW Link, he's supposed to represent Link as a whole, just with a new design and a couple of updated moves to match the latest 3D game.
Obviously he's still gonna feel "half-trapped in OoT/TP", because the moves from those games are consistent with most versions of Link, including BotW.
True, but I still feel like Wild Link is an entity that SHOULDN'T be conflated with the old Link moveset the way they did. Just going by BotW at the time, the Remote Bomb feels like an arbitrary change, and his Hookshot/Clawshot is gone. Then prominent fixtures of BotW like the game's weapon variety and the Champion abilities (at least just Urbosa on grounded charged Up-B, Revali on aerial Up-B, and Daruk on shield) are ignored. Even Stasis would be a good "unique" grab.
They attempted to make up with Young Link and Toon Link, but that feels like if Ganondorf was changed to something more "canon", and Blood Falcon was brought in who's a straight echo of Falcon with darkness replacing all fire effects.
Octoling could easily be using the weapon types from Splatoon that Inkling already doesn’t use. The only thing that would likely be the same would be the up+b.
Kinda like how Isabelle isn’t an echo of Villager even though she could have been.
It seems Smash fans who don't play Fire Emblem would think she's an "anime swordie".
But Smash fans who DO have at least cursory knowledge of Fire Emblem would love to see her as Smash's "vanishing samurai" (or at least would consider her a different take on Mythra's niche).
(If you want Vergil to fill the spot instead, he's not getting in the same installment as Dante, lbr)
I mean, did you see the reaction to Byleth? they're arguably the most unique FE protag in the game right now alongside robin, and people still wrote them of as a "braindead swordie"
the Hoes mad meme was based on something, after all...
As much as I would like to see a Whomp/Thwomp combination or even a Coin Coffer, I think it would be fair if they instead added generic enemies from other franchises
I don't think it would work as well for anything other than Mario characters though. Aside from maybe Slime in Dragon Quest.
Though purely from a gameplay perspective, generic Kirby enrmies would be a better way of representing different ability movesets than dumping more on Kirby himself.
64-Brawl at least felt like they were cool games that just happened to have IP strength. Now it feels like "IP rep" is overriding everything from good moveset design to stage selection.
Nintendo doesn’t fully own the Hyrule Warriors variants, so Skyward Sword is the next best option (unless Nintendo is already working with Koei Tecmo to add Ryu Hayabusa).
Nintendo absolutely owns everything other companies put in Zelda since at least the GameCube era. Capcom was given no credit for Vaati in FSA or Smog in EoW.
The spirit for AoC Impa specifically lists Koei Tecmo in the copyrights alongside Nintendo, implying partial ownership. This isn’t the case for the Fire Emblem Warriors OCs in FE Heroes, which only list Nintendo & Intelligent Systems. For further context, SEGA/Atlus partially own the OCs in TMS:FE.
There's no way to tell if a character would be fun in Smash or not. Because fun is subjective, and every character can be fun (no character would be locked into an unfun playstyle, that doesn't make sense).
So yeah, I want to see characters that I like more than characters that I think "would be fun", because I'm not the one designing the character for the game. I'm not the one that has to worry about gameplay
Yeah, plus no character is designed to be "un-fun." It's not like any designer would go "well its accurate to the character that they'd be boring and uninteresting to play," everyone was made with SOME kind of draw in mind. Even if you don't think a character is fun to play, they're made so SOMEONE will find them fun.
On top of that, I feel the character themselves doesn't determine the kit as much as people think. I definitely think Corrin, Byleth, and even the Dragon Quest Hero were built around differentiating them from the other FE's for example, and even in other Fighting games, I've seen the same thing happen when alot of characters cover the same real estate.
I firmly believe that people only use the "ad campaign" argument because they think it's the easiest way to convince people the character they want have a chance.
Yeah that definitely makes sense. Any reason to make THEIR character seem more likely and any reason to discount someone they aren't personally interested in.
I want Impa because we need more Zelda reps that aren't just Link. Outside of the hero and his two alts, we've got Zelda, Sheik, and Ganondorf. Kinda weak considering the Zelda franchise is one of Nintendo's big 3.
That's just a pain with Zelda not being a character-heavy franchise. Even Zelda and Ganon suffer from being impossible to represent fully because each incarnation is so different.
Everyone wants anyone for the latter reason. Talking about how prominent they are is just how you sell it to other Smash fans. No one has ever reacted to a Smash trailer like “Yes! His game sold SO many copies!”
Smash would be really boring if they just put the latest characters in the game rather than focusing on fan favorites. It’s a big reason why FE’s last lineup feels so boring to me
It's fine then. Maybe a bit boring to some who want older characters, but newer characters who are indeed popular isn't exactly a bad thing either.
The problem really lies with newer characters and games that usually don't leave the biggest impact on the playerbase. That's why Corrin's inclusion still isn't favored that much by the fanbase, and why Alear is getting a lot more flak compared to other FE suggestions.
ATP, I'm questioning why the fandom even wants another "wielder of the Xenoblade" and Pokémon starter.
There's a big double standard on Fire Emblem... which is sad because I WANT the other rotating cast franchises to be treated like Fire Emblem in the fan sense.
Smash has always been doing this and it makes perfect sense for doing so, but the Fire Emblem reps, particularly the more recent ones, really suffer from this.
Both Corrin and Byleth come from games that require a choice from the player to choose a side, but because these games were less than a year old when their respective protagonists were added to Smash, it has to be played incredibly safe, both for ad and spoiler reasons. Even then the latter isn't consistent.
I guess they don't want to advertise favoritism in a game where choices matter way more than in Pokemon, where differences in starters only affect a few battles.
And because Fire Emblem has so many games, one title might get eclipsed by another if more recent. Lyn probably would've gotten in if Brawl either released earlier or had more development time.
There should be a new rule where a newcomer's debut has to be a year old MINIMUM.
Pokémon has suffered from it too. We went from a nice variety of different Pokémon to "just starters". Even Brawl marked a transition point where most of the new Pokémon reps were starters.
I'd say Xenoblade is teetering on the edge, but can be easily reversed by focusing away from the protags.
At the same time, I do want some more risky newcomers over the most likely ones, such as Eunie or Excadrill.
I prefer Eunie over Noah or Mio for having a way more interesting personality and gameplan, with Noah having plenty of overlap with Shulk.
Excadrill is great for more close-quarters combat and for adding short, stockier fighters. There's also the new spotlight from frequent usage in Legends Z-A, plus that stupid looking Mega Evolution.
Overall I think priority/importance is something that affects newcomer choices, like how there's no world where Balrog gets in over Chun-Li.
But it's very case by case and wish it was a little looser.
the thing is if you don't add the newest FE you end up missing on a lot of eras of FE that just wouldn't be there anymore, like Black knight and Lyn would be fun but fans of their eras already have Roy and Ike, FE is just harder to add the 'fan favorites" due to how large the series is and what you need to cover it, same with Pokémon
You can absolutely have the fan favorites while representing different eras though.
Ike is the biggest fan favorite of his era and it's not even remotely close, so while Black Knight would be cool, there's not much of a need to add him.
Roy is a fan favorite amongst Smash fans, but not to actual Fire Emblem fans. Lyn is the clear GBA favorite to them, so swapping out Roy for Lyn would be much better representation in the eyes of many (except for Roy fans, of course).
I mean nowadays I see more love for ephriam than lyn as far as GBA lords, but half of that is partially because he and hector are the only GBA lords that frankly don't end up falling off in mid game.
Black knight and Lyn would be fun but fans of their eras already have Roy and Ike
Thats an interesting argument actually. You sometimes see a similar issue with fan rosters where they like to add Pokemon from older generations because that's usually the uploader's favorite, There are gens that have been missed but you do get the occasional person adding Gen 1 pokemon even though there's already 4-6
That's a fair counterpoint. I just don't see what Waluigi could bring to the table that couldn't be done by literally any other Mario character (outside of just having really long limbs).
He's a "dumping ground" for spin-off stuff that the existing Mario characters no longer have room for in Smash.
Not too different from how most want Octoling to be a "dumping ground" for weapons Inkling isn't using in Smash currently, and how Isabelle is a "dumping ground" for AC stuff that Villager has no room for too.
I do think it's a good thing for Smash to focus on recent titles as it's partly what gives each title its own identity.
That being said this approach does have a lot of issues, with safe picks often outprioritizing more interesting characters, particularly hurting series with more reps.
Even if the chances of older characters aren't zero, they're usually a minority if they do get in and have to compete for a lot of other characters.
That's why a shift away from protagonists to more secondary characters would preserve "identity" without the "safety chains" that come with recent representation.
Absolutely no way you think that Octoling would be even remotely different to play compared to Inkling. It would at maximum be an Echo Fighter with maybe a different Final Smash.
Can I not want them for both reasons, though?
You can. In all honesty though, (EDIT: big-name) video game protagonists feel like they're the same few characters just in different IPs these days.
I’m entirely in the crew of “would be fun to play in smash” although I sometimes am in the crew of “this series represented should at least have its villain playable too” but all the time I am both.
I'm starting to shift towards "this series needs more villains than just its main one" atp.
Yeah, throw in more villains. Ridley and K. Rool are good, but megman(either Dr. Wiley or Sigma from X) and sonic(I guess either Shadow, or Eggman) needs their villains playable.
I would argue that no 3rd-party character truly needs more than one character.
Not that I'd complain with those guys though. Eggman would be really fun.
I'd bump the "limit" to two. Maybe three in the case of big Nintendo-associated franchises like Mega Man, Final Fantasy, and Sonic.
(I'd just hope that the next Mega Man character isn't from Classic, and the next FF character isn't from 7)
My personal stance:
One character is all that a 3rd-party franchise needs
Two characters is totally fine, but should be the absolute maximum
Three characters is too much unless the roster gets unrealistically enormous
That's perfectly fine, but I still can't deny that even if Sonic had a more representative moveset that's fun to play, two characters would be too limiting to represent that franchise.
At the end of a day, it's still a guest franchise. It shouldn't be treated as if it were a Nintendo series when it comes to the number of fighters.
Other 3rd-parties that still don't have a playable fighter at all should be higher-priority than a third Sonic character.
Eggman def, Shadow is not a villain
Give Zelda Pig Ganon (and also give Ganondorf more sword moves but keep him "big chunky melee fighter"), give the Mario sub-franchises King Boo and Kamek, and give Star Fox Leon.
I personally wish Ganondorf would go the opposite direction. My favorite Ganondorf move of all time was the boot up smash from Brawl and Smash 4, and him using the sword for his smash attacks in Ultimate felt like he just moved a bit away from the Falcon part of him and more toward a new Ike part of him.

Give him a new neutral special that’s an energy ball that can be hit back and forth like a tennis ball. There are plenty of things that could work for a down special. I kind of like his side special as it is.
IKR!!?? The worst part is that they ignore that Ganondorf DID use several brawling moves in canon, even canonizing ones from Smash, and yet those are dismissed as not being "enough". The whole campaign is hypocrisy.

If CDi counts, why not Morshu? Popular among meme lovers, opens up interesting gimmick ideas, could genuinely be fun to play, and imagine getting hit with "Come back when you're a little, MMMMM, richer!" after you get combo'd by the guy
I have too much love for Morshu to want to see him in pain
You are getting downvoted for the greatest suggestion I've seen in a while.
These haters just don't want to deal with his broken lamp oil combos.
i think it might be because they kinda type like the guy from the Top 10 Hottest Sonic Females video speaks
I want characters in Smash because I personally like them or their franchise

That's absolutely a positive for fangames since Smash games are typically designed to sell.
Ever wondered why a good 75% of all representation in Brawl (newcomers, trophies, stages) are from games that released during Melee and Brawl's gap?
Yet oddly Bowser Jr. was delayed 'til 4.
IDK, I found that baffling at the time...
I want them for both reasons.
Both are valid reasons to want them imo.
Impa would be, yes and waluigi could be....
but to the fandom, Lyn would just be another "anime swordie" and octoling would just be an inkling echo at best.
a lot of recent Lyn portrayals have made her into an archer so who knows
Then she's just another version of Link lol.
Byleth is my favorite version of Link.
Helps make up for BotW Link feeling half-trapped in OoT/TP though...
The reason for that is because Link in Smash isn't supposed to be BotW Link, he's supposed to represent Link as a whole, just with a new design and a couple of updated moves to match the latest 3D game.

Kinda like how Isabelle isn’t an echo of Villager even though she could have been.
I call Isabelle a "dumping ground character", even though it's rather bad wording lol.
As someone who never played a Fire Emblem game, but played a Rivals of Aether mod for Lyn, i would gladly take her as an addition to the roaster.
I don't really care myself. i'm just saying what the wider fandom would think.
The "wider fandom" isn't as united as anyone thinks.
I mean, did you see the reaction to Byleth? they're arguably the most unique FE protag in the game right now alongside robin, and people still wrote them of as a "braindead swordie"
the Hoes mad meme was based on something, after all...
The "wider fandom" is both disunified and collectively full of shit.
I never denied that they're full of shit, but i know the reaction.
they could make Lyn a bow user and people would still call her a braindead swordie.
Yes, and my point is that I don't care what "they" think.
nor do i, ultimately.
the only character i don't want in smash are the meme requests (the likes of the shreks and gokus in the ballot days)
any game character can fit as long as they're fun enough
Vergil would have to be in a special edition rerelease as per DMC tradition
I'd want Hector to be in if Lyndis is to be in. You can probably guess why.
Because they were both Emblems in Engage and that game shafted Eliwood? /j
Look at my flair.
Look at what I put at the end of my previous response.
You address your wife by her full first name?
"Waluigi is a prominent character in his franchise" Yeah, so are Cheep Cheep and Whomps
Literal generic Mario enemies are more popular than 90% of the gaming industry
A Goomba or Koopa would be a good addition to Smash though. Piranha Plant was made as a joke, so let's keep the ball rolling as a legitimate trend.
As much as I would like to see a Whomp/Thwomp combination or even a Coin Coffer, I think it would be fair if they instead added generic enemies from other franchises
Bandana dee fans:
I don't think it would work as well for anything other than Mario characters though. Aside from maybe Slime in Dragon Quest.
Though purely from a gameplay perspective, generic Kirby enrmies would be a better way of representing different ability movesets than dumping more on Kirby himself.
This reminds me of when someone said while Sakurai loves us at the end of the day Smash bros is still a marketing tool
64-Brawl at least felt like they were cool games that just happened to have IP strength. Now it feels like "IP rep" is overriding everything from good moveset design to stage selection.
One of the few people to use my favorite design of Impa, cheers!
It was used in SS, HW, and Cadence of Hyrule, after all.
Sounds more like partial ownership of the game rather than the character (which is a modified Paya model).
In reference to the game, sure. But why list the copyright for specifically the spirit?
Also, Persona 5 Strikers seems to have the same situation (OCs & unique designs are shared between SEGA/Atlus & KT).

You want Waluigi because he's important to Mario
I want Waluigi because it'd be funny
I want Impa because we need more Zelda reps that aren't just Link. Outside of the hero and his two alts, we've got Zelda, Sheik, and Ganondorf. Kinda weak considering the Zelda franchise is one of Nintendo's big 3.
That's just a pain with Zelda not being a character-heavy franchise. Even Zelda and Ganon suffer from being impossible to represent fully because each incarnation is so different.

Smash would be really boring if they just put the latest characters in the game rather than focusing on fan favorites. It’s a big reason why FE’s last lineup feels so boring to me
What if the characters of the latest installment ARE fan-favorites? See: Noah, Mio, Pokémon starters as usual.
(Lowkey agree though; I'd rather have other Xenoblade characters and non-starters)
It doesn't help that Corrin was announced for Smash only six months after Fates released, and that's back when it was Japan-exclusive.
ATP, I'm questioning why the fandom even wants another "wielder of the Xenoblade" and Pokémon starter.
There's a big double standard on Fire Emblem... which is sad because I WANT the other rotating cast franchises to be treated like Fire Emblem in the fan sense.

I'd say Xenoblade is teetering on the edge, but can be easily reversed by focusing away from the protags.
With Lucario, he was pushed hard back then.
Sometimes I eish Smash could stay small like in 64-Melee where they were more confident in making things up and not as bound by corporate interests.
the thing is if you don't add the newest FE you end up missing on a lot of eras of FE that just wouldn't be there anymore, like Black knight and Lyn would be fun but fans of their eras already have Roy and Ike, FE is just harder to add the 'fan favorites" due to how large the series is and what you need to cover it, same with Pokémon

I just want best waifu Lyn playable.
We need to stop pretending Waluigi is a prominent character in his series. He's iconic/memorable, but he's always been filler.
We need to stop pretending the main series is the only part of Mario that matters.
He's literally the perfect rep for Mario party/sports. There are lots you can do with it
He was the main villain in mario party 3 and mario tennis 1, so it fits
He is 100% a prominent character in his series. He has more than 50 appearances by now, most of which are playable roles.
"But none of those were mainline ga-" stop. Just stop.
Anyone one of you Toad fans? Both him and Waluigi are good.
Preach. I would love for both of them to get in.
I mean Smash technically is a fancy ad campaign and always has been.
The Pokémon are too these days. Licensed games were too back in the PS2 era and on smartphones today.
But its purpose being a "fancy ad" doesn't excuse if a game or at least parts of it don't feel great to play.
I do think it's a good thing for Smash to focus on recent titles as it's partly what gives each title its own identity.
That being said this approach does have a lot of issues, with safe picks often outprioritizing more interesting characters, particularly hurting series with more reps.

octoling sounds boring af
They'd be more of a "dumping ground" for stuff Inkling can use canonically but has no room for in Smash tbf.
Mostly the form of whatever weapons Inkling doesn’t have, a majority of which are result of Inkling’s kit being locked to Splatoon 1.
I've never seen anyone want Impa as anything other than a Sheik Echo, so I don't buy this at all.
Sheik was made up; she still doesn't even have a harp taunt. Why can't Impa be made up?
Because every time I suggest that, I get told to fucking kill myself for not wanting an Echo.
tbh it would be hard to find waluigi unique moves
It would be hard to find Octoling unique moves too yet everyone's fine with them getting weapons Inkling has no room for.
Octoling and waluigi would be fun to play? How come?
Tbh I’d only take Lyn, the rest I don’t really care much for.
What if I want Waluigi for both reasons?
I want Waluigi in smash because we need a Mario Party/Sports rep.
Absolutely no way you think that Octoling would be even remotely different to play compared to Inkling. It would at maximum be an Echo Fighter with maybe a different Final Smash.
This is why Marx is my most wanted in Smash:
I feel he'd be a blast to play AND he'd be perfect as both a new Kirby rep and a new villain rep
