So I’m brand new to super smash bros. This is my first smash game ever so all tips are welcome. Even super simple stuff like controls. I’m not very good at fighting games so please keep it simple.

  • Don't sleep on shields and grabs. Don't overuse either, but don't sleep on them.

  • Learning smash is difficult. One of the most important mental aspects is focusing on improvement instead of winning.

There's alot you will need to learn eventually that won't come intuitively this video explains alot of the core gameplay of smash. It helped me improve massively (you can skip to min 13) https://youtu.be/ED-h2j_vDl0?si=_gmzR6n0CbP4r1xL

His beginner series is also very important. https://youtu.be/ta3L35wsE6o?si=RGhWFSWqtXPx_aYG

Finally I would highly recomend joining the smash ultimate discord. Playing friendlies with people online who can help you is a much more enjoyable experience than quick play.

  • Try not to get tilted or feel bad if you get destroyed on quickplay, esp in the 2-3mil gsp there are hoards of sweats and smurfs that have thousands of hours in the game and have been playing since release 7 years ago.

  • First thing's first, turn off Stick Jump or Tap to Jump or whatever the game calls it in controls (click where it says More Controls), and set jump as whatever button you feel is most comfortable. I play with Switch 1 Pro Controller; I have mine on LT and X. Stick Jump is the mechanic in Smash where you tap upward on the L Stick to jump, and it will do nothing but limit you and teach you bad habits. Once that's out of the way, take a moment to take note of what each button does. It can be useful to take a picture of your control setup screen at first for quick reference.

World of Light (the single player mode) is a fun way to ease yourself into the game and will unlock most of the roster. Alternatively you could just start by messing around in the various different modes. Avoid online play unless you prefer trial by fire.

As for getting into competitive play, I'd start by learning to avoid hits. Don't worry too much about combos until you have a good feel for the physics engine and can mix up all your movement options, while not over-relying on any one of them:

    -Full hop (normal jump)

-short hop (tapping the jump button quickly makes you jump a shorter height, this is another big reason you don't want to be using stick jump)

-double jumping (unless you're playing Kirby, Jigglypuff, or a few other characters, you only get two jumps before you have to land, learn to use them sparingly and tactically!)

-shielding (shields shrink as you hold them and as they take hits. different moves damage the shield differently. you want to learn not to over rely on shielding, because if your shield gets too small it will break, leaving you unable to move for a bit and will give your opponent a free kill!)

    -sidestepping (pressing shield+down)

    -dodge rolling (shield+left/right)

-fast falling (pressing down while in the air makes you drop faster)

-air dodging (pressing shield+any direction while in the air)

-Up+B (Upward Special, this will double as a recovery move for getting back on stage for a good majority of characters, but not all of them. Many characters consider the Up-B to be similar to a "3rd jump")

Smash feels weird at first because it doesn't control like any other fighter. These are going to be the core movement fundamentals that every character has that you'll want to learn for competitive play, if you ever decide you want to join us sweaties.

OH AND PLAY EVERY CHARACTER!! SEE WHO FEELS BEST TO YOU!! I cannot stress this enough. Don't listen to people who tell you to find your main quickly and start looking up their combos. You will not have fun. The only thing you need to focus on right now is not getting hit so easily, because as a new player you're a sitting duck. Other than that, just enjoy the game and have fun!

  • Be careful in the online, there are very toxic players that only want to ruin your day

Luckily, there's always newbie friendly arenas here and there

  • Dude, its a game! Have fun, people here are waay too focused on combos, online and what not. Smash is a freaking awesome game from n64 to switch, of course u can tryhard it, but is that really the way u wanna play it for the first time? I insist, just have fun!

  • Do the World of Light to unlock characters (Adventure Mode). We had the game for a while and my son did a nuzlock during break. We're actually finishing it today

  • Pick a character, go to YouTube and look up every way to land a killing blow, like 3 basic combos,

For example zeldas back throw kills around 130% and up throw around 150%

Really just get comfortable with the movement of your character np need to go into in depth analysis and watch like 4 hour tutorials.

  • Quickly choose a character you like and only play that character

    An anti tip right here

It's actually a good tip. At the begining I think taking the time to find a characters that feels right and sticking to him for 100ish is pretty optimal. However if after some time the character doesn't inspire him anymore, the best is to switch and keep going with the new one until he reach at least mid elite smash imo.

The idea is to do less switches so he can focus on actually learning the fundamentals and develop game sense.

That’s not a good idea. You want to try a lot of characters, and start weeding out the stinkers, and a fully narrowed down roster you probably have 2-5 “Mains”, as you never know what you’re feeling or who you’re going against.

Listen to this person OP. Try every character; they're all so different! (not counting "echo fighters" like Peach/Daisy or Simon/Richter or whatever)

Although echo fighters like Marth or Lucina, or Roy and Chrom, you can try, because they are different. Lucina is easier to play than Marth, because she doesn’t have the tipper vs sourspot mechanic on the sword.

yes that is why I didn't mention them. and Roy/Chrom aren't really echo fighters as Chrom has Ike's up special; he's idk what you'd call it... a fusion fighter lol.

edit: also he's really bad. I actually can't believe they DIDN'T give him Ike's side special too. It renders him pretty fucking useless. If you like Chrom you will like Roy or Ike better because they decided to make him the worst of both worlds. And we absolutely didn't need FOUR fighters with god damn dancing blade that's insane. absolutely baffling decision

I like Chrom’s Up Special more, so I run with him over Roy, but I think they could have made him more interesting with Ike’s Side Special, although I do still like Dancing Blade, it can be boring, I agree.

Fair enough, sometimes I run Chrom over Roy for that reason too. His up special might be worthless for recovering but it's fun to abuse on-stage lol.

Also at the risk of sounding pedantic, I feel like it's worth pointing out that Marth and Lucina are not echo fighters either. The only true echo fighter pairs in the game are Peach/Daisy, Simon/Richter, Pit/Dark Pit, and Samus/Dark Samus because they play exactly the same way as each other. Tipper makes Marth and Lucina too wildly different to play for them to be technically considered echoes.
