I want to make my sling sound like a small firecracker by rolling 8 strands of paracord guts instead of the recommended 2 strands. Question is would it work in achieving what I want? Hopefully someone with more experience making whip crackers and experimented with cracker thickness can give some insight here

  • More thickness doesn't mean more sound.

the thing that makes the crack is the tip of the cracker breaking the sound barrier as it gets accelerated faster than the thicker part of the release cord. There's a whole bunc of physics at work there, so you should probably look up the physics of whips and how they crack (the exact same thing happens with a sling).

  • I kept thinking of the food crackers and had to double-check what sub I'm in

  • The best way to improve the crack is to have an overall heavy sling with a very light cracker and a uniform taper. The taper is what makes whips so effective. F=ma , so for a wave traveling down the whip, less mass will give more acceleration, the accumulating acceleration is what makes them crack so loud.

Interesting! I’ve always been wondering what they meant by tapered sling and how they taper their weave. Do you know any good tutorials on tapering?

Archaic Arms Balearic sling tutorial is a good starting point
