Just had the idea, you could make a staff sling be smaller, like half of it's size. Has anyone tried that? It would basically slight the same type of ammo as a regular sling, so I guess the question is would it do better or worse than a regular sling?
Oooh I want to see the recommendations for this!
I use a cane for balance and I have been theorizing hard if I can modify the end to throw a sling on to turn it into what I guess would be a cane-sling or baton-sling?
The length just seems like it would be satisfying to throw like a dog ball atlatl.
You could drill a lanyard hole a few inches from the tip, and attach one end of the sling to that. A bit closer to the tip file a notch which will hold the release end of the sling (with a loop instead if a cracker).
I'm waiting on my latest batch of blackthorn staves to dry/season. I'm definitely making a staff sling/fighting stick/spear combo out of one.
I was just thinking about this listing to some old “catch this” podcasts. We could always just, you know, try it!
In John Hurleys book on the Shillelagh (irish fighting stick) its proposed that it may have originally also been used as a crann-tabaill (staff sling). A Shillelagh is rarely longer than 4ft so your small staff sling idea is most likely viable.
From my experience Staff slings are harder to aim than regular slings. Maybe a shorter staff would close that gap.
Do you mean something like this? Channel has a few interesting projects: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZnFEQJfml8
No, I know about the stick sling, I've actually made a topic about it on this sub at some point lol. I mean a staff sling, just smaller, such that it can be used with single hand.
