I want to love that comic, but if the flavor text isn't read so much is missed. The flavor being a wall of text on dome pages can be intimidating. With the update gaps and several author hiatus I have had a hard time getting back into reading it.

yes. there is a little grove since these are meant to be used by Elites, who have three fingers, in the middle of handle is a groove to separate the two front fingers, this groove has to face outwards.
Or to be more descriptive. A type-1 Meluth'qelos pattern energy sword from the game 'Halo: 2' of the 'Halo' franchise. Wielded primarily by the race known to humans as 'the elites' or the 'Sangheili', used by zealot class and above.
In historical religious art, halos were not just round. Their shape often symbolically represented the characteristics of the depicted figure. Different types of halos for Jesus, Angels, Saints, etc. Team Cherry likely chose this style to indicate GMS is a divine being.
I think this is a feature tied to Soul absorption / soul management, since it's similarly shaped to Eva's crest, which gives you the ability to absorb soul rapidly when resting. It's also called Sylphsong, sylph being an air spirit of sorts irl (so we know it's related to soul, a lifeforce that exists not only within bugs and life but also is found just floating in the air). The only other mention of the word sylph is for the slugs that produce the pale oil which seem to polish and reveal the needler's "true" form or realize it's potential.
As others have mentioned, the radiance has a similar spikes in her head, and the pale king had a literal crown of them. It may not be the case for the PK's latter form but both the radiance and gms seem to have a pointy end instead of "legs".
Maybe their design is made to allow them to absorb and pass soul through them or something like that. Other powerful pale beings, like Hornet, and The Hollow Knight also have a "pointy" head that isn't really common amongst most bugs. Thk in particular seems to have been trained or grown to have their "horns" grow a lot more and change the shape of the squarish head they had as a kid.
The tuning fork on top of mount fay is also a tool designed by the weavers to communicate with the mysterious fayforn, and it has a somewhat similar shape to hornet's head and hk's head. Maybe I'm finding connections where there aren't with this though.
There's also the issue that there's the White Lady that although has "horns" they're not pointy whatsoever, they're curled and twisted like a tree. She doesn't seem to share that design at all. So I'm not quite sure.
But I'm fairly certain the halo crown is for something to acquire/absorb/manage soul.

Back in the day it was a lot more common to depict them vertically, idk why it became the somewhat boring golden ring floating horizontally atop the head, since it was more like a ring of light sprouting from the back of the head in other depictions, I think in Buddhism they're always vertical though in Asian art it isn't just light it can also be depicted as flames.
But yeah they basically just signify sanctity/holiness.
I assumed it's a reference to how the Virgin Mary is depicted with a halo that is also a crown, to go with the "evil catholicism" vibe of the citadel & how she's referred to as "Holy Mother"
