Hollow Knight: Silksong's Patch 4 (1.0.29242) is now live for all PC players, and coming soon to console!
This one includes another big bug-fix pass, but the biggest update is the introduction of a new Simplified Chinese translation provided by the talented fan group Team Cart Fix!
Team Cart Fix's translation has been available to the Silksong community (in mod form) for a while now, with many thousands of players having already experienced, and praised their work.
Their translation builds from elements of the original Silksong translation, retaining existing names for most characters and places, except in instances where the original translation was incorrect, or inconsistent with Hollow Knight. Most importantly, this is a translation by fans who are well-versed in the (quite dense) narrative and lore of both Hollow Knight games, and understand the subtle links and connections that should be retained in the text.

Additionally, under the hood, we’ve now upgraded to Unity's Input System to provide additional controller support. This one’s been a while coming, as it’s a fairly significant change.
Unity’s Input System is much more fully featured than our previous setup, and is still actively improving. Please note: Though it adds many additional features and controller types, there are still limits, including some quirks around certain bluetooth/wired combinations. If you’re experiencing issues with your controller, please check the support list in the patch notes below.

- Fixed Thread Storm damage tapering (additional hits don't taper down as sharply).
- Fixed rare instances of regaining control when grabbed by a Wraith.
- Fixed couriers incorrectly offering the same delivery immediately after completing it.
- Fixed additional instances of Hornet being able to push some enemy types through the floor.
- Fixed issues when using Harpoon to stun or kill certain bosses.
- Fixed Fractured Mask not protecting against volt hazards.

I remember like a week ago or so there was someone who posted a video of losing their steel soul run to this, so at least they seem to have made a difference for future players.

Multibinder’s initial bind to clear maggots. Wow.
That's a big change, I was wondering why that didn't work before. Does that mean you can clear maggots AND heal two masks just by binding once ? That makes multibinder so much more useful and almost necessary for Bilewater and Putrified Ducts exploration.
Yes, that's exactly what it means.
Might be because internally each 2-mask heal from the Multi-Binder isn’t considered a “heal”, at least in terms of clearing the maggots

Disregarding the effect it has on the game, it just makes sense when you see how multibinder works. I imagine many in the community equipped it, thinking it would work this way.
Yup. When I got Multibinder I thought, "huh, I wonder why it does 2 discrete binds rather than one longer one" and just chalked it up to TC wanting an aesthetic difference from Deep Focus in Hollow Knight. Then, when I first got maggot infested and saw that binding only cured me, but didn't heal, I immediately thought, "OH! THAT'S why Multibinder does 2 discrete binds! It's so that you can cure yourself and heal for 2! That's a brilliant idea!" And then I was baffled that it didn't work.
I guess the intention for the 2+2 is to be less punishing than if it did a 4 heal and just took longer, because if you get hit mid-way, you still get that 2 mask heal.
I feel like the way they wrote the patch notes, you can feel that they still don't super agree that it should remove the maggots, but it is like they are relenting that this is what the people want. But yeah to me, that first ding, that's a heal, and that should get the maggots off.
Yeah, they've already got mechanics that conflict with the lore (Hornet being a literal demigod who takes contact damage from even a fertid, which her own notes say, "It has no means to defend itself. Its only hope for survival is to be mistaken for a plant."). I think they can let us have this one.
I literally JUST beat bilewater last night 😭
Literally finished clearing Bilewater yesterday thinking "Thank god I will never have to come back" (I know, delusion) and I specifically wished for these two changes:

yeah now it makes it a lot more viable for people who want to have the plasmified state with non-architects crest (and don't have shell satchel equipped) to do so without running across the map all the time
You technically could do it before by grabbing the blue masks from cocoons, fast traveling to wherever you need, and then activate the overdose. Still, you had to be extra careful on your way out of Wormways, and you couldn't fast travel to some other place once you're done with your main target. The update makes it so much better.
As I can tell from patchnote, you can't overdose with cocoons anymore, and you need architect crest, or am I getting something wrong?
I think that patch actually means you can; they didn't "fix entering the plasmified state", they "fixed problems with entering the plasmified state".

There used to be a bug that prevented overdosing if you got a last blue mask from something other than a phial. This should be fixed now.

The patchnotes probably refer to getting the overdose itself (i.e. 9th mask) from cocoons; getting your first few extra masks should still work. Though it's something that needs testing.
There was a bug in that if you entered the state via the lifeseed instead of the vial, you'd get all the debuffs but not the Regen.

Witch crest and plasmification are made for each other since witches bind heals you even while overdosing.

Beast is already pretty meh as a crest and if you're not in steel soul, you have to get to plasmified wormways which is only available in act 3 and then run back every time you want to plasmify yourself. I think it's still balanced.
Shell stachel would be so good in normal mode. Imagine if we get in in a hypothetical Godseeker mode

You technically could before... but only with Architect, and only on the absolute first attempt. The very first instance of the cutscene drops you off in the arena with full control and no boss until you walk right. You can engage the Plasmium risk-free after diving, but only that first time.

I really hope we get a post game in the DLC. I want to talk to the NPCs after stopping the Void creep. I want to show Shakra my finished map. I want to drag Lace around like a disappointed parent and make her apologize to everyone.
For sure. I want the chance to go around and speak to everyone after the threat is finally gone. No need for some big extra encounter at the end, just a chance to go around checking on everyone, come back to my bellhome and go to bed

You didn't lose masks before either; only the overdose status. So you could fast travel with masks and then activate the overdose. I myself used it several times on my Steel Heart playthrough, Bilewater and Groal in particular become a joke with it. Still, this change will make it so much more convenient.
I heard you could already carry the Lifeblood mask through fast travels. Now it doesn’t remove the Overdosed state, making it so activating it without Architect Crest or Shell Satchel much easier
The shell satchel already made overdose very easy in steelsoul but this still helps out a lot.

The idea is that you can get stuck in a state where you have the pogo attack hit box active all the time, although you lose the state when it hits something.
Yeah, this fix also kills the Terminus Skip that lets you go straight to GMS after beating Phantom. Pogo Storage could lead to a lot of broken stuff
When taking certain sources of double damage while you were pogoing, you could achieve a state called "pogo storage," where your pogo's hitbox would persist even after you'd completed your pogo, meaning you could use that hitbox to "pogo" without actually performing a pogo.
Thank goodness I went for the speedrun achievement a couple weeks ago. My run would've been a complete failure without Terminus skip, which requires pogo storage.
Wreath of purity duration increased + multi binder first bind clearing maggots. They nerfed the hell out of bilewater.

Legit how beating the game with double environmental damage felt like, but then in my second playthrough I zoomed through Act 1 (5h speedrun) and it felt so easy, so I can't complain.

Some players can get the tool before fighting Groal, just like I did, by using the hidden entrance to Putrified Ducks.
I thought that was the only entrance to the Purified Ducts proper? From what I recall if you go from Bile water to Ducts, you can't get to the rest of the ducts until you break a wall (that you can only break by entering from memorium)

Yeah same, I thought it was pretty natural you get the wreath first since a side quest points you to the Ducts
I mean it depends on how early you go to Bilewater. You can get double jump and clear Bilewater fairly early in Act 2 while that merchant wish can take some time to appear, or you can get double jump super late/decide to stay away from Bilewater as much as possible. Both ways are pretty natural, it depends on the player
I'm pretty sure that quest pops up as soon as you get faydown.
Consider that some people (like myself) went Greymoor -> Sinner's Road -> Citadel, then as soon as I finally explored the left side of the map, went straight back to clear Bilewater before even finding the Memorium.
When I finally made it to Ducts and got the item, I just rolled my eyes and said "gee, thanks for nothing" lol. I would have loved it if the item was placed slightly earlier, like as a reward for Chef Lugoli victory or another gauntlet in Sinner's or Bilewater!
On my first playthrough, I personally entered Bilewater in Act 1, entered the Exhaust Organ from the right (in act 2 because I thought you needed an ability to get through the mist), and throught the left side was a cool shortcut rather than the intended way to get there.

I got it before fighting Groal, but he was one of my last bosses cause I didn’t get double jump until quite late in the game.
I noped out of bilewater early on and ended up doing ducts first through memorium, though ducts themselves have some of the most obnoxious enemies in the game. Neither are easy.
Duct is short but all the difficulty is dumped onto you at once, Bilewater is a long stretch of slow pains
I got to use it before Groal. Heard about the Wreath and went looking for it.
Besides, we're in the "wiki age" of the game now. New players struggling with groal are going to be recommmended to get the item and it'll be easier for them to do so.
Me! I heard so much about Groal that I ended up doing his side of Bilewater way later in the game and steamrolling him first-try because I had waited WAY too long lol
Me, i full cleared bilewater at the end of act 2 after I'd done everything else. It wasn't hard at all at that point. Its reputation comes from people trying it early. I think
I did! I did half of Bilewater in act 1, came back later with the wreath in act 2 to finish it off and beat Groal. Blind playthrough.

I think it means that hitting multiple enemies with one slash will now heal multiple masks. It didn't before, you could only heal once per swing.

I'm not sure if that's something they fixed/changed, probably not considering how Beast's healing works, but it doesn't matter, cause, if I understand this correctly, this is still a huge buff to Beast crest:
What the fix means is that now the attacks of Beast crest bind have the Piercing property applied to them.
In case people don't know about this, certain moves in Silksong have a Piercing property, like Silk Spear, Witch's bind or the Longpin tool, that go through the enemies defensive moves/body parts, like the Judges' shields, Lace's parry, Skull Tyrant and The Unraveled heads, and even regular attacks that can be parried.
With this new change, Beast crest can now be used even more aggressively than before, as all your slashes will go through the enemies defenses, including parries, which means you don't have to dodge as much as before and can just spam the attack button.
A boss like Karmelita, who blocks your attacks if you are out of her punish windows, is going to be destroyed by this change, as now you can wail on her for a short time without her being able to do anything about it.
Bell Beast with Beast Crest will be so much easier now!
Yeah I’m going to abuse this. I already did runs against Karmelita and Seth so I can’t wait to see how much this helps.
The fury slashes now have the same properties as silk skills where they ignore any blocking or parry properties invincibility will still be ignored though

Please, TC, offload float to the quick map button. It doesn't even conflict, since you can't float while on the ground and can't open the map while in the air!

Genius! It even makes sense because it's "open map" or "open dress". Kinda.
Thats actually genius and if they allow you to open and close your cloak rapidly and for the sawtooth circlet to only activate with this cloak, it provides much more control for that tool and makes it better :)

Exactly, there was a way (DOWN + JUMP) but they took it out after the first week because some people complained that it messed their pogos (?)

Down+jump was a terrible choice for a bypass, since you're pressing down so much for pogos and such. up+jump would have been a much better choice.

The input was actually too strict imo, it only worked if you pushed straight down, not down-left/right

If you're on pc you can use a mod that does that. That's what I'm doing until they patch it back in(if ever).

I didn’t realize I was so close to death when having one fractured mask in voltnest on steel soul…… I also had enough silk to heal I just didn’t think it mattered
Does anyone have numbers on the thread storm buff? Also is there any more info on the rune rage change? Is it a buff or a nerf?
I don't have info on the thread storm buff, but according to the wiki, the damage of the first rune in rune rage increased from 37 to 44, which is about an 18% buff across all stages (since the damage of all the runes scales off of the damage of the first rune).
Tbh this is just about the same as/slightly better than its first iteration, even with its better scaling with volt filament and shaman crest.

It wasn’t bad, but it was inconsistent with Hollow Knight or didn’t capture the essence of the source text as faithfully.
Translations can be challenging in storytelling. Subtle changes in word choice or tone can have profound implications. The words some bugs use imply their intentions, characterize their social status in Farloom, and at times convey their relationship to Hornet. If done without a delicate approach, the fabric of the story unwinds (pun intended)
It WAS bad. Not only inconsistent with the first game but also straight up wrong/misinforming and in the second patch it was also spoiling act 3 area literally in the first half an hour of the game, it was outrageous

I just fought Gurr the Outcast today and while it was an enjoyable fight I was a little surprised that he didn’t have more to his moveset beyond a charge and spike throws. Not sure if they actually added anything to him outside of the spikes having an active hitbox within a shorter amount of time though

Yes please, Drifter's Cloak feels so awful to use because it doesn't buffer out of anything except clawline.
there is after binding and clawlining. it just doesnt buffer after using the cloak itself. just like u cant buffer a needle swing while swinging. seems consistent. theres no reason to spam the cloak so dont and u wont have that issue
Yeah, but the lack of buffering tends to cause some pretty silly deaths, since if you mistime it the cloak literally just won't open

The changelog says they switched to Unity gamepad input and if it is the old one it is pretty bad.
This update actually broke the controller support for me :( Is there any way to return to the previous update on Steam?
I'm using 8bitdo Pro 2 (xbox style controller, in the xbox mode) on Steam on my mac over bluetooth. I've been happily playing with it this whole time (more than 70 hours now). But now it doesn't work anymore, controller just doesn't get detected. Same as with the original Hollow Knight, I had to use Lumafly to install mod for better controller support there.
