I’m taking my daughter on a Bali trip for a week. It’s been a tough year. I had two heart attacks and she has been studying and working her arse off and we are both exhausted, broke and desperate for a break.

We are staying in Kuta and looking for a couple of cheap/nice things to do while we are there.

Any recommendations would be very much appreciated! Cheers :)

  • Broke and going to Bali for a week? I don’t think “broke” means what you think it means

Everything is relative. This is ‘shoestring’ after all.

it's entirely possible that they've been scrimping and saving for this and just getting there + accommodations is most of their budget

  • There is a ton to do around Kuta. There is a big shopping mall by the beach, there are a ton of bars around. There is an excellent used bookstore that carries books in multiple languages. I'm not sure what "broke" means here, but you could do a surfing lesson. Just walk the beach and find someone offering lessons and then bargain.

That being said, Kuta is just a tiny part of Bali. There are lots of amazing places.

I'm not sure how walking is for you, but you can walk quite a ways up the beach from Kuta, easily up to Seminyak beach.

Check out Klook.com for daylong 'car rental with driver' to go around and see if you can find a car rental for a day. It's usually around $30USD a day. They will take you to some of the cool sights. You can get in 2 or 3 neat temples and waterfalls in a day pretty easily. You can look up the sites you want to go to and make a plan with the driver.

Also download Gojek. It's a good way to do a scooter rental. You can get around cheaply.

You could do a day trip up to Ubud, visit the Sacred Monkey Forest. It's cool, pretty cheap. Walking around Ubud is a nice way to spend a day.

See if you can find free walking tours on Guruwalk.

    Have fun!

    Awesome. Thanks!

  • Rent a motorbike and head into the interior. It's a long ride, but you can explore around the volcano. Taking a public bus might also be an option (do not take a tour bus).

One of my favorite activities was to find a village and explore their shrine area. Inevitably, you'll meet some of the locals and can have a lovely chat with them. I was once invited to watch them make crafts in their little family workshop.

Agree but only if comfortable riding a scooter. It’s def not the place to learn but the centre of the island is just amazing, away from all the touristy areas like Kuta and Legian. So much to see around the volcano.

This is true. After scootering around for 3 weeks on a very quiet Island I thought I was ready for Bali.

    I was not.

Cheers. Thanks! I’m very interested in temples :)

You know that one Temple, it's like Sky Temple or some such (Pura Lempuyang Luhur). And it's always people standing in the gate, with the sky and Mt. Agung in the background and the water below them reflecting the sky?

It's a pit. Give it a miss. The "water" is a mirror the photographer holds over a concrete slab. There are so many more beautiful places. It's an instragram stopover, not a pretty place.

  • Given your year of health problems, I hope you've sought out a health insurance plan tailored to your specific status and have gone over the fine print really carefully. ,
