Additionally where in western counting we use thousand additions (think of milibyte -> byte -> kilobyte -> megabyte -> gigabyte -> terabyte... etc) the Chinese language does this is 10 thousand steps.

It's answered elsewhere in the post as well so I cannot take full credit but apparently it has to do with how the Chinese do their numbers. Where we westerners think in multiplication of 1000, Chinese don't pronounce anything larger than 10,000 and just ends up combining words at that point which is where the weird wording comes from.

they just keep adding a zero instead of switching to m
1, 10, 100, 1k, 10k, 100k, 1000k, 10000k, 100000k
because they're indian and that's a very common way to count in india (using crore)
