“Support” has become a nothing word. All anybody means by that is “I would feel good if that government/people beat the other government/people.” Who cares how people feel if it doesn’t turn into an action.
Its been like that in the US for decades. Lots of opinion-based campism, especially on social media. The US is a really isolated echo chamber politically which is why opinion-based "support" without any meaningful action is considered super important.
It's maybe not uniquely American, but I think it descends from the Protestant idea that you get into heaven based on faith alone and not good works like the Catholics say. If what one believes is the most important measure of one's worth and political action aside from voting is wrong/not possible, then it absolutely makes sense that indoctrinated Americans would carry out judgement against those who do not in their heart of hearts support the causes they do. This also explains why they get so hysterical about it, because you're implying by not supporting a cause they do that they might believe something wrong and thus be less worthy.
This is so insightful to me. Thank you for putting this into words, as I’ve been thinking for so long about the difference in the Anglo/protestant ethos. Why Americans seem to devolve into campism over conflicts that don’t seem to involve them has always intrigued me.
As a person without any real political power, thousands of miles across the world from all of these places, what happens there affects my life here.
Like it or not, what happens in these particular places have a huge impact on what happens in my life. I can explain why what happens across the world changes what happens to me here, but that another long post.
“Support” can seem mild to you, but my personal advocation is all that I actually have & I have a strong interest in what happens in these places.
What I hope for is that thousands of others show their “support” for the same policies that I do & then our collective support can begin to have a real impact on our own governments actions.
•I need the genocide in Gaza to STOP.
•I require Russia to defeat the NATO proxy army, for my own nation’s freedom from subservience to the US.
•I need possible trouble between China & Taiwan, to not send my country into either a hot or cold war with China.
Well for starters that is unlikely the case and even if so you can begin organizing you’re own organization by trying to find the ones and twos and try to build an apparatus from there. You’d be surprised how many people just started their own book club to discuss the ideas which is step 1 to doing something larger.
It should be a crime to disparage the Palestinian cause and its victims by mentioning it anywhere near those other two like there's any comparison to be made.
Read about how the Russian-Ukraine war developed since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Russia wanted to join the US system and was rejected so it became its own imperialist power. The Ukraine war is a result of that rejection and Russia (the government and elite) want Ukraine because it was one of the most resource-rich countries that were balkanized after the cold war, and it stayed neutral until 2014 when there was a civil war that the pro-nato side of Ukraine won, which is ultimately why Russia got involved with Ukraine. The Russian public has interest in Ukraine because the west provinces are mostly ethnically russian and theres this “eurasianism” type of nationalism russia has developed, but what really matters is post-USSR Russia became hyper capitalist and wants to rise as another hegemony to challenge the US. Not through communism, but through excessive market capitalism and imperialism.
Yeah, I would read from better sources.
What you read was basically BS.
This war is about Russian national security & not territorial expansion. Also, the people of the Donbas needed to be saved from a NATO funded, armed & trained Ukrainian army.
Russia does not need more territory or natural resources, but they do need national security.
Exactly, the only people I've seen claiming that "tankies" love Russia are people trying to use it as a dunk (and to be honest I'm not entirely sure the people saying it don't know the USSR isn't around anymore)
I am a Communist & support Russia to defeat the tentacles of NATO in Eastern Europe.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend (not always, but sometimes). Russia must defend themselves & by Russia defeating NATO, they are also weakening an aggressive capitalist military alliance lead by the United States. NATO is the extension of the US Empire.
I live in a subservient US client state. If NATO managed to defeat Russia in Ukraine, then that would have only increased the level of obedience of my nation to the United States.
Also, there is a real remanent of the Socialist & Communist thought & ideology, inside of the Russian Federation. It’s not the same as it was, but it is there.
Yeah extremely critical support for Russia in defeating NATO, but also NATO is just as likely to dissolve under the current US admin. And while there may be remnants of socialist thought there, it's about as influential to policy there as it is in the US, which is to say, not even a little bit
Curious how there’s no option for Ukraine only, it’s almost like they don’t want to talk about what type of person would exclusively voice support for Ukraine
There are a lot of reasons why Taiwanese “independence” is not a real thing.
There is no such this as Taiwanese independence, because China will never allow themselves to ever be balkanised again & either Taiwan remains as a part of China, or becomes a giant military base for the United States, to be used strategically against China.
There is no third option.
Taiwan is too small to have any real independence.
Either Taiwan remains as part of the most wealthy, powerful & populace nation in Asia; or becomes an unsinkable aircraft carrier for a failing & weakening previous sole superpower of the world.
What is “deep capitalism”?
You have invented a new term. Well done.
Russia was subjected to the economic “shock doctrine” in the 90’s by the United States. It was not a domestic Russian policy, but a version of extreme capitalism that was inflicted on Russia. Those oligarchs that you speak of were created by the US policy of mass rushed privatisation & the US puppet Yeltsin. The US wrongly believed that Putin would be a good US puppet as well. They were so very wrong.
The US has way more “oligarchs” than Russia, it’s just that the US calls them the “captains of industry” & “billionaires”. No, the US billionaires are in fact US “oligarchs”. The US oligarchs own the US Congress & Senate.
Russia has actually crawled themselves out of the extreme capitalism of the shock doctrine. More state owned & majority state owned companies that are not run on pure capitalist principles & more welfare to the needy & the return of pension system & universal healthcare that is augmented by private health insurance. Russia has more of a mixed economy than the US has.
What you seem to be complaining about is social conservatism. The Soviet Union was also very culturally conservative, while having a form of socialist of economics. Cultural attitudes towards the LGBT community has more to do with the predominant culture of Russia & has nothing to do with corporations controlling the power of the state, which is what fascism actually is.
Corporations no longer control the Russian government & the Russian oligarchs were famously warned to stay out of politics by Putin. Fascism is when corporations use the power of the state, not when countries have any socially conservative laws.
The United States is owned & operated by large US & multinational corporations & it is just in these companies interest to promote LGBT+ culture. The next push of state & corporate authoritarianism with come with an 🏳️🌈flag waving high.
I do not support the fascist governments of modern Russia and Ukraine lmao. Yeah Ukraine being invaded is bad but they just gave all their Nazis a legal division within the military. Good luck with that!

No you don’t understand, our combined spiritual and metaphysical tankie support for Palestine will help Hamas win 😤
Palestine might lose the “war”, because it’s never been a real war. It’s only ever been a massacre of the civilians population of Palestine.
The Palestinian people have won the battle for hearts & minds across the world. Not won war.
The world stands with the Palestinian people, because we saw the overt barbarity of the State of Israel.
Tankie or not.

Add the burden of actually organizing outside of the internet
you mean that political work can be done outside of twitter? i don't believe you.
How when every group around me is run by feds
Well for starters that is unlikely the case and even if so you can begin organizing you’re own organization by trying to find the ones and twos and try to build an apparatus from there. I don't know a single communist that has a kind word to say about either Ukraine or Russia.
liberal: who do you support russia or ukraine?
any sensible communist: total collapse of the capitalist system would be the preferable outcome
yeah like i am literally unbothered by fascist infighting ESPECIALLY when it's a proxy war.
Modern Russia is not fascist. Western Europe & the United States is.
Modern Russia is indeed fascist. Or is the deep capitalism, legalized repression of LGBTQ+ people, and oligarchy not enough for you?

When the Democrats get back in power, they will attempt to revive the US backing of NATO.
Libs love NATO & actually believe the nonsense of “NATO is a defensive alliance”.
“Tankie” is such a strange way to spell “correct.”
It is certainly something liberals would say.
Pro tip: disregard anybody who genuinely thinks "politics" has parity with the average Buzzfeed personality test. Your sanity will thank you.
Why is Ukraine a thing people care about again? I genuinely didn’t get any information about the topic from people besides “Russia evil”
there is no reason other than russia evil
There is a lot of information out on the net that discusses the Russian point of view.
Like it or not, but Russia attempted every diplomatic avenue to avoid the war & seriously made a good effort to end the war in less than 3 months.
Curious how there’s no option for Ukraine only, it’s almost like they don’t want to talk about what type of person would exclusively voice support for Ukraine
Interesting that there’s no Palestine/Taiwan option. I know a few people like that
There are a lot of reasons why Taiwanese “independence” is not a real thing.

I maintain that nobody knows what a tankie is and it just means "leftist I don't like."
🇹🇼is 🇨🇳 🇷🇺 should stop invading 🇺🇦 And FRRRREEEEEEEEEEE🇵🇸
Pretty interesting they themselves had Ukraine, PRC, and Palestine
Who taught liberals the word "tankie"?
