I don't think it's this deep. The average American voter doesn't compare the USA and Europe. Nor do they care what we do. But corporations and rich people care about the EU. Because it costs them money and power, so they want to dismantle it since individual countries cave easier to pressure than the combination. They want to get rid of the EU, so they don't have to follow regulations. They don't give a rats ass who is in power, musk doesn't support the AFD in Germany because he thinks they are good, he simply supports them because they want to dismantle the EU, that's all that matters.
It has little to do with ideology and more with being able to project economic power.
It's all in Trump's "Art of the Deal" and goes back already to Woodrow Wilson: The US does not like big blocks they have to negotiate with as those have bargaining power.
