I’ve travelled to the US many times, and I often find that I’m taller than most of the Americans I come across, and I’m not even super tall (1.83m.) Here in Ireland, I feel just slightly above average in height for a guy, and compared to some people on the continent (Dutch folks in particular), I’m barely scraping average 💀
It is absolutely wild how much average Dutch height has increased. My grandfather felt like a giant when he was there in 1945 at 183 cm. When he travelled back in the late 90s with a friend visiting inlaws (Dutch war bride), he was shocked at how many men were taller than him.
In the early 1950s, tall men were still very unusual in the Netherlands. No more than 3 percent of the generation from 1930–1934 reached a height of at least 190 cm. In 2020, more than 1 in 5 young men were at least 190 cm tall, 7 percent were at least 195 cm tall. A height of less than 175 cm was quite normal for a man in the 1950s: 42 percent of young men were shorter than 175 cm. This height is less common in today’s society: 12 percent of young men are shorter than 175 cm.
EDIT: we were raised on loads of dairy products (milk, cheese sandwiches, quark, yoghurt with fruits)....they contained natural growth hormones but might also have contained some artificial growth hormones.
The jump in average height inside 2 generations can't be explained by genetic and selective mating alone. Nutrition is a large factor in this!
It's probably mostly because now is one of the first times, everyone has enough acsess to food in the youth... especial the two world wars were leading to malnoutritment of young people and so to less growth in hight yhan what would be possible from a genitical standpoint
Very much a below average Dutch man here. I used to go to concerts and festivals everywhere in Europe. I had to stand up front or couldn’t see shit but the screens on the side.
Went to several festivals and concerts in the US and could stand comfortably in the back and literally look over people and see the stage and everything. It was glorious.
What they lack in height they make up in width tho.
I lived in North America for nearly 2 years and I'm a 5'8" (173cm) woman. I felt like a giant while living there, towering over some men and even more women, when I feel only slightly taller than average at home in Belgium.
Now imagine what it’s like for me, an American woman over 6 feet tall. I’ll be traveling to Europe next month and have been told that I may need to duck in doorways in older buildings. I already do that!
If you happen to go the Netherlands, be sure to visit a castle.
Those were build back then with a LOT smaller people in mind, so you get this nice contrast of modern dutch length people navigating spiral stairs designed for hobbits, and medievil armour and weapons designed for 160cm tall knights.
Muiderslot castle for best effect.
Oh and if you happen to go to Sardinia. Go look at some Nurage's (castles/fortified towns from 1000BC).
The hallways and doors in those things were small for the people from 1000BC already. Absolutely feels like halflings lived there.
I'm 173cm, too, from Spain (or rather 1,73m, as we say here, bless the easy metric conversions!) and I'm shorter than most men and taller than most women here.
A sort of happy middle, which works very well for me.
I had to Google it and you're right about certain ethnic groups however, apparently high ethnic diversity brings the national average down. I suspect there's a lot of guess work when it comes to South Sudan and the estimates are conservative.
I went to Disney World years ago and the amount of morbidly obese people on scooters was truly horrifying. It was during the period where they were pushing healthy eating in kids so there were some healthy food carts around. I was so excited to be able to eat carrot and celery sticks. I ended up having such a messed up stomach from their food.
What you do with your own time is your business.
No judgement here.
But I don't really believe any numbers except the malnutrition rates (which are verifiable), and the US's are simply too high for them to be in the top 27 heights.
It's the lying though. He has all these checks and not a single doctor says, "Mr President you're not actually 6'2", you're about 5'11", and you weigh 'whatever''.
There's no disgrace in becoming shorter as we become older. I was measured at the doctor's last week and I am 2.5cm shorter than in my youth. It happens to us all, like needing reading glasses. Something else the Tangerine Toddler refuses to do.
I'm not going to be visiting the USA while he's in charge am I?
Fun fact: King Willem-Alexander is pretty much exactly the average male height in the Netherlands, we actually decide how tall everybody gets to be based on the height of the monarch
I'm 6'2 and when I was in my late teens/early 20's, I could stand in the back at a concert and see everything. Now all I see is the heads of the crowd.
I’m the same and I used to be the tallest in the room or at least among the tallest people in the room, almost always, back in the 90s. Nowadays.. less often!
I'm a 186cm man and recently took a trip to Efteling in, not far from Rotterdam (which is awesome btw).
It was a really odd feeling being "average height" when I'm used to being the tallest guy in the room. I'd say a good 20% of the women were a similar height as me.
Yes. My five foot tall sister met and married an ”average” height Dutchman. The Dutch height genes must be dominant as my niece and nephew overtook my sister in height at age ten. Though apparently now as adults they are both below average Dutch height.
jesus, what makes them say shit like this unironically? Do they really believe that? Could it be that they don't know their own heights?
Maybe because Daddy Trump has been height-frauding for decades and routinely claims 5-10cm more than he actually is they have a distorted perception of height? Like, they see trump who claims to be around 190cm but in reality is like 180cm they go and think "wow, I'm almost as tall as him. We are truly a nation of 6.5 feet giants. MURRICA!!!"
Yeah, but those measurements were done by people willing to lie on his behalf. The measurements done at his processing, probably weren't. Providing the leak is genuine.
Trump has always lied himself taller and slimmer than he was, and given his diet and aversion to any sort of exercise, it's really hard to believe he is under 100kg.
Bostonian subrace has a -1 in Strength and a +2 in Intelligence from their proximity to Harvard. And of course they have waterwalking as well as an inherent trait.
in all the studies linked above related to height the yanks were the only one i saw who submitted their data for each "race" separately. they're so fucking weird about 'race'
Does he not realise that Scotland has even more people who are descended from those “highlanders”? Or does he think all the tall ones emigrated to the US leaving the short ones behind?
I am more in awe that a lot of people (not just USians, but especially USians) claim to be 6' and 200lbs pure muscle mass as if these specs changes anything about them.
I have a friend who stated to be 6'3 and 220lbs just like Chris Hemsworth! Even if this was true, the only thing he would have shared with Chris Hemsworth was that they are both 6'3 and 220lbs. He still would lack the handsomeness, success and charisma of Chris Hemsworth in any capacity.
The shoulder thing too. American mens tailoring is hideous. They've always cut their suits with masses of shoulder padding to create a square silhouette, which aside from a few years of the 80s was considered gauche in Europe.
But the last few years it's been on steroids - they're now cutting shoulders that jutt an inch OVER the natural shoulder line, and padded to sit virtually square to the neck. It's comedy gold when you seem them move in a way that makes the whole edifice crumple inward to show how synthetic the whole looks is. Peak vanity.
It's absolutely hilarious that some seem to think this means Americans are broader shouldered.
The only thing I was in awe of when I was in the US was seeing what obesity actually looks like. My country absolutely have overweight people and probably a handful of obese people too. But nowhere near the rate of obesity that I saw in the US.
I went to Six Flags Great America, near Chicago, and I noticed that all the roller coasters had an example seat where the line to get in starts. I didn't understand why until I saw a man sit down in it, and fail to be able to close the bar over his huge belly. I later saw people who couldn't even fit in the seat. Even seats built like a couch for two people to share. I even saw people stand in line all the way through, which could be as long as an hour sometimes, only to discover once they got to the front that they couldn't fit and had to walk out.
I have never seen that in my country. It's not a thing at all.
If I was in awe of anything that was tall it was the buildings. The joke "How do you spot a tourist in New York? They're looking upwards." is incredibly true.
The 6’ thing is actually kinda funny because most Europeans don’t use feet (or even know how long a foot is) and wouldn’t use ”6 feet” as the breakpoint for being ”tall and manly”.
Tall white Americans are always tall precisely because their European ancestors came from typically tall countries like Norway and The Netherlands. This is like the mirror opinion to the 'I'm Swedish because one distant relative came to America from Sweden in 1672'
Can someone explain to me why muricans have this obsession with height (and hand size, I always struggle understanding stuff like this https://www.youtube.com/shorts/cHE4tXLviyE)?
Every day I learn something new. Didn't know Americans are a "large breed of people".
I only had american crested (guinea pig) as pets. Where can I get an pure breed American?
One thing that does shock me about Americans regarding height is how big the difference is between men and women in couples.
This is my biased opinion based on the Americans I know here in Europe, but almost all of them are couples of super tiny woman with super tall man. Like almost a meter difference in height for some of them.
I am as European as they get and my son is 6‘7 and I am 6‘3 and my Chinese wife is 6‘. We do not feel particularly liliputan when we visit the US, except perhaps weight-wise.
They have an average male height of 5’10” while many European nations have higher average male heights:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Average_human_height_by_country
People are often in awe of how wide Americans are, not how tall they are…
They are all taller than European when lying on their backs
I’ve travelled to the US many times, and I often find that I’m taller than most of the Americans I come across, and I’m not even super tall (1.83m.) Here in Ireland, I feel just slightly above average in height for a guy, and compared to some people on the continent (Dutch folks in particular), I’m barely scraping average 💀
Got the same experience here in finland. I'm just around 1.8m and most people around here feel way taller than I am.
Yeah Dutch people tend to be really tall
They prepare for the rising sea levels already. ;)
Dutchy here.....I am 1.88m and amongst the males I was 5th in lenght out of the 14 males in our class. Loads of tall farmers!
my mexican ass can't even picture it
At 1.91m I feel average as a Dutchman.
Measurement units unfamiliar. How many stacked hamburgers is that?
6'3 freedom units or 50 burgers/an average American breakfast.

My cousin was 6'7", so I he was about a decade eolse than me and I can remember as a child watching him duck to get through the door 🤣🤣🤣
When your country is below sea level, tall people have an evolutionary advantage 🤣
I'm also Irish and I'm 6"3, never felt huge here. But when I went to the Netherlands I felt like a wee baby boy
Exactly.
The belly is about two feet in the air
2 freedom units *
Those are adjusted so they seem less at high numbers
They simply care a lot more about height and therefore have more incentive to lie about it. They are obsessed with the whole 6ft thing.
I lived in North America for nearly 2 years and I'm a 5'8" (173cm) woman. I felt like a giant while living there, towering over some men and even more women, when I feel only slightly taller than average at home in Belgium.
Edit: conversion wasn't perfectly accurate
Well the average for women in the US is 5'3.5" so you are actually a giant there but also a good bit over the Belgian average (5'5")
That’s my height and I’m a typical short arsed Scottish woman
Now imagine what it’s like for me, an American woman over 6 feet tall. I’ll be traveling to Europe next month and have been told that I may need to duck in doorways in older buildings. I already do that!

And yet women there are downright bizarre in their obsession with height as the most important dating metric. Such a weird, shallow country.
I’m 6’1 and was the tallest person in any room I was in when I was last out there lol. I’m on the taller end of average in the UK
They may be not very knowledgeable but they for sure are well rounded... badum-tss.
But the US measures in feet and inches which are bigger than CMs /s
Freedom units to you.
Freedom of making shit up
2/120ths of a football field
If you sort that list, the US is 40th.
Though Germany shows up 5 times above them, so possibly it's not that useful.
I don't think Germany can really be counted in something like this. There are vast regional differences, especially between North and South.
*Averages* are so unappreciated;)
[removed]
I'm 6'2" and feel very average height in the Netherlands
I'm 6" and live in Australia. This year we visited Denmark and the Netherlands and it was the first time I ever felt short.
South Sudan is up there with the Dutch? Read this somewhere, but I’m not sure
Yeah, they are some big mfs
I had to Google it and you're right about certain ethnic groups however, apparently high ethnic diversity brings the national average down. I suspect there's a lot of guess work when it comes to South Sudan and the estimates are conservative.
Aye, it would be, in many many many cases, easier to jump over an American than walk around one when passing.
I went to Disney World years ago and the amount of morbidly obese people on scooters was truly horrifying. It was during the period where they were pushing healthy eating in kids so there were some healthy food carts around. I was so excited to be able to eat carrot and celery sticks. Netherlands literally has 6+ feet as the average.
Unfortunately all the dutch shortkings die from floodings in a yearly ritual to keep the dutch heads above sea level /s
Yeah 4x4 means 4 feet tall and 4 feet wide
Not only the width, but the circumference
Metric please :(
Like ~178cm which is shorter than many European countries, here in Norway it's 181cm
Amazed at how wide not so much in awe.
•The Netherlands enters the chat
5’10’’ means 177 cm

King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands (183 cm) next to Donald Trump (190 cm).
oh that's why they have brutish size, they lie about it.
Yeah, that's another thing... a lot of it is self reporting.
I don't think the numbers are that accurate. But the US isn't near #1, the malnutrition rates in youths are simply to high to support it.
Self-reporting + never rechecking. People shrink with age and dicks with obesity.
Yup, can confirm used to be 188 cm in my teens. Rheumatism, bad posture and losing a lot of hair has me scrambling for 183 while I am approaching 50.
What you do with your own time is your business.
No judgement here.
But I don't really believe any numbers except the malnutrition rates (which are verifiable), and the US's are simply too high for them to be in the top 27 heights.

For another example, Cristiano Ronaldo (1.87) next to Trump ("1.90")
I bet Trump's wearing his lifts too! That's what causes the forward lean.
I'm surprised he didn't move up a step
OI! That's uncalled for.
The Cankles not fitting into the shoes would too.
smh, people always accusing Trump of something/s
There's also something called dementia lean.
Maybe all those tariffs are in response to him not being allowed a box to stand on?
And William Prince of Wales (191cm) next to Donald Trump.(190cm)
https://preview.redd.it/y5mmz7hodk6g1.jpeg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21edf74e79c043bcfd367d9ff3e0e296a8550354

It's just a conversion error, Europeans can't handle real units! In reality, Trump is taller.
According to his pants, his tailor def believed 190cm lie
Fun fact: King Willem-Alexander is pretty much exactly the average male height in the Netherlands, we actually decide how tall everybody gets to be based on the height of the monarch
Was about to say this person has never been to the Netherlands.
His feet are tiny!
Not if you compare it to his brain..
I'll just leave this here. American and Polish MPs comparison.

Yeah but those are Bostonians :/
They only ever field Bostonians abroad.
It is known.
From the balkan state of Bostonia?
Yeah, they make a killer Cevapcici.
Bostonia & Herzegovina, been there :D
judging by appearance only, I know which pair look more professional
I remember watching a documentary about Poles in Scotland during WWII - one lady said in awe “and they wore cologne!”
Sounds like the accounts of women when the vikings came over "and they bathed!"
Viking eye for the Saxon guy.
I need this show.
Horrible Histories has you covered.

Absolutely beautiful ❤️
I love how well the American desert camo blends in to a Polish town in winter
Eastern Europeans are just built differently. :D
Meanwhile here I am, Romanian and 160 cm tall 🥲
Meet the Dutch
Hello, im 6'3 and I don't feel particularly large.. if anything im starting to feel a little under average with the new generation of kids growing up
I mean hell I'm 6'0 and I feel small compared to many others..
Yes I'm 181cm long and feeling short
Okay that’s nice for the misses, but how tall are you?
Hell I'm 176 cm I only feel tall in the south east of Mexico. When I went to the Netherlands, I felt like short person.
I'm actually quite short for a Dutch person. I'm 1.75m (male)
There’s little ladders and stuff around for when you have to reach the higher shelves I hope?
I have these tools for shopping, it's a bit noisy tho

hecking memory unlocked, no idea what these things are called, just remember walking on 'm
No, there wasn't. That's why I moved to Belgium.
No, we just climb up on the counter. I'm 163... (Dutch and a woman).
Yeah. I'm a 182 cm Dane and I never have a good view of any band who's concerts I attend
I'm a 163cm immigrant living in Germany and I stopped going to concerts because inevitably I will only see someone's back and nothing else.
It's difficult being short in Europe.
I'm 6'2 and when I was in my late teens/early 20's, I could stand in the back at a concert and see everything. Now all I see is the heads of the crowd.
I’m the same and I used to be the tallest in the room or at least among the tallest people in the room, almost always, back in the 90s. Nowadays.. less often!
And Danes
And Bosnians, Estonians, Montenegrins, etc etc etc
Well the have to make up for living in the low countries tho 🤔
The Netherlands is the only country I’ve ever been to where I’m standing on my toes to see the stage at a concert. I’m 6’2.
I'm a 186cm man and recently took a trip to Efteling
in, not far from Rotterdam (which is awesome btw).It was a really odd feeling being "average height" when I'm used to being the tallest guy in the room. I'd say a good 20% of the women were a similar height as me.
Efteling is not in Rotterdam…..
Oh my gosh I LOVE Efteling! I always wanted to get married there but alas, didn't in the end.
Yes. My five foot tall sister met and married an ”average” height Dutchman. The Dutch height genes must be dominant as my niece and nephew overtook my sister in height at age ten. Though apparently now as adults they are both below average Dutch height.
i feel like a dwarf whenever I go to visit
This is what happens when you flagshag. It’s so important that the UK doesn’t follow them down this route.
100%, grew up proud of the f that attitude most of the UK have for US style flag shagging and it is definitely depressing seeing it on the rise.
It’s probably not the “broad shoulders” that would not fit but rather a broad something else…
Chode?
We got a certified chode on our hands
jesus, what makes them say shit like this unironically? Do they really believe that? Could it be that they don't know their own heights?
Maybe because Daddy Trump has been height-frauding for decades and routinely claims 5-10cm more than he actually is they have a distorted perception of height? Like, they see trump who claims to be around 190cm but in reality is like 180cm they go and think "wow, I'm almost as tall as him. We are truly a nation of 6.5 feet giants. MURRICA!!!"
The NYPD apparently leaked Trump's real weight and height as 5'10" and 287 pounds, which would be ~178cm / 130kg.
If that's accurate he's not claiming "5-10cm" more height, he's claiming twelve centimetres more height.
He weighs more than I do? Wtf?
I'm a fat English bloke who's about 183cm tall coming in at 115kg
Me too, strangely.
His "official" weight has varied a lot in recent years, with records between 215 lbs (~97 kg) and 244 lbs (~110 kg) that I can find.
130kg. Holy shit. That's a BMI of 41. You're officially fat at 30 and above.
25 and above for overweight aka fat. 30 and above for obese.
40 is classed as "class III obesity" or "morbidly obese" by scales that have a 3rd category.
It's hard to say what his real height is. I do however believe that at one point he WAS around 185cm, as people get smaller with age.
Funnily enough, Donny seems to get TALLER the older he gets. What a truly great president. 😂
Indoctrination with American exceptionalism since birth. They're deluded.
Bostonian subrace has a -1 in Strength and a +2 in Intelligence from their proximity to Harvard. And of course they have waterwalking as well as an inherent trait.
Maybe -2 speech with the accent
"Breed of human" tf?!? 😭😭😭
in all the studies linked above related to height the yanks were the only one i saw who submitted their data for each "race" separately. they're so fucking weird about 'race'
They never met a Dutch, Dane or a Swede I guess.
Americans who say this kind of shite never left their own town in Bumfuck North Carolina.
6' around
As a below average dutchman. Did they wash them to hot?
I read this post at the time also
he went on to say he gets his ‘brutish size’ from his great great grandparents who were highlanders
or something to that effect
Does he not realise that Scotland has even more people who are descended from those “highlanders”? Or does he think all the tall ones emigrated to the US leaving the short ones behind?
Ofc they did. The big tall strong ones where the best of the best so they all left for the greatest country in the world MUUURIIICAAAAA
Just say you're fat. Why do you need a paragraph to say a single word ?
You can pretty much guarantee that person's about 5'5
I know, 5ft 5" people are midgets. I look down on them with me being really tall at 5ft 6" 👍
What the fuck is "breed"?
I am not native in English, and I associate this word with animal husbandry.
Correct
Average male height in the EU is about 5 cm (2 inch) taller than US. But why use data when you can use your freedumb to spread misinformation?!
The US isnt even in the top 20 for the average height of men.
Drop by Amsterdam, homeboy. We’ll see how tall you feel.
Hmm I've heard theorys of superior genetics before, can't think where
US are way down in height here: Average height for men and women worldwide
They are known for broad bellies though, maybe it was just a typo?
Oh so now Americans are a breed unto themselves. I thought they were a breed of Irish/Viking/Italian/Polish/Scottish.
My [admittedly short] parents upon returning from germany, “we felt like Chihuahuas in a land of great danes.”
Fun fact: Great Danes are, despite their names, a German breed, so they are actually not far from the truth
My dog is 2% Mastiff - I knew I always felt a kinship with the Germans for some reason.
/s
I am more in awe that a lot of people (not just USians, but especially USians) claim to be 6' and 200lbs pure muscle mass as if these specs changes anything about them.

Isn't it that Americans get smaller in height because of the lack of nutrition?

I didn't understand why until I saw a man sit down in it, and fail to be able to close the bar over his huge belly. I later saw people who couldn't even fit in the seat. Even seats built like a couch for two people to share. I even saw people stand in line all the way through, which could be as long as an hour sometimes, only to discover once they got to the front that they couldn't fit and had to walk out.
I have never seen that in my country. It's not a thing at all.
If I was in awe of anything that was tall it was the buildings. The joke "How do you spot a tourist in New York? They're looking upwards." is incredibly true.
Why is the United States out of order, it should be below Canada.
Meet the dutch :) or are they measuring horizontal? Seen alot of them upon being in the USA which left me in "awe".
I love Americans weird view of the outside world. The fucking propaganda they've swallowed is North Korean-esque.
Almost all of the countries with the tallest average human height are in Europe.
Is this the next iteration of the plus-size/big-boned/curvy/thicc chain of euphemisms?
Americans are midgets compared to normal central - north - eastern European men
Is "broad shouldered" a synonym for ...big boned?
Is broad shouldered another of their code for fatties?
I think that's "big boned." But then the definition of broad shouldered might have expanded like their waist sizes.
This is like the mirror opinion to the 'I'm Swedish because one distant relative came to America from Sweden in 1672'
Im the average male height in the US.
I am 10cm below the average male height in my country lol.
Europe has the tallest population in the world lol. The men are on average 5cm taller than North American men.

Just so we're clear; both of these men have an officially listed height of 6'3"
Typical yank who thinks being fat is on par with being intimidating
I'm 186cm and I feel like a little guy when I visit Amsterdam.
Laughs in being the original red white and blue waterbender.
Forgot to mention - Horizontally wide not vertically wide.
Aren't the Dutch the tallest by average? I read somewhere that the US was shrinking because of poor diet. I'm 6ft 3 and Canadian.
Like we didnt invent them in the first place
Growth hormone in food is not something I would be proud of.
Broad shouldered: a weird way to spell "morbidly obese".
One thing that does shock me about Americans regarding height is how big the difference is between men and women in couples.
This is my biased opinion based on the Americans I know here in Europe, but almost all of them are couples of super tiny woman with super tall man. Like almost a meter difference in height for some of them.
They are a large breed of humans, for sure.
As a 5,5" dane i feel very much alone in Europe 🤣 height vise..
Pretty sure there are literally more people meeting that description in Europe than the USA by far.
It is very unusual to be 6 feet wide to be fair. Wouldnt rolling be easier at that point?
I'm flabbergasted at how many stupid people you have.
Im 6ft, very broad shouldered (to a point I can’t buy dress shirts in normal shops, need to be tailored)
Last time I checked I’m not American
Laughs in Dutch
American height obsession is something else lol.
laughs out loud being Dutch
Must be all those neanderthal genes /s
The only thing that leaves me in awe is the extend of steroid abuse in the US
The famously small Norwegians lol
“Large breed” is a new way to spell “obese fucks that hoover up corn syrup 24/7”
They should visit the Netherlands.
I am as European as they get and my son is 6‘7 and I am 6‘3 and my Chinese wife is 6‘. We do not feel particularly liliputan when we visit the US, except perhaps weight-wise.
Yeah we in the Netherlands‘ve never seen men over 182 cm, that’s like 2 whole centimeters shorter than the average male here.
I'd imagine the Dutch wouldn't notice at all
