"Europeans are often in awe that we have so many broad-shouldered 6'+ men."

They have an average male height of 5’10” while many European nations have higher average male heights:

People are often in awe of how wide Americans are, not how tall they are…

I’ve travelled to the US many times, and I often find that I’m taller than most of the Americans I come across, and I’m not even super tall (1.83m.) Here in Ireland, I feel just slightly above average in height for a guy, and compared to some people on the continent (Dutch folks in particular), I’m barely scraping average 💀

    parent root
    47 points Castform5

and I’m not even that tall (1.83m.) Here in Ireland, I feel just slightly above average in height for a guy

Got the same experience here in finland. I'm just around 1.8m and most people around here feel way taller than I am.

It is absolutely wild how much average Dutch height has increased. My grandfather felt like a giant when he was there in 1945 at 183 cm. When he travelled back in the late 90s with a friend visiting inlaws (Dutch war bride), he was shocked at how many men were taller than him.

    parent root
    11 points Oohhthehumanity

In the early 1950s, tall men were still very unusual in the Netherlands. No more than 3 percent of the generation from 1930–1934 reached a height of at least 190 cm. In 2020, more than 1 in 5 young men were at least 190 cm tall, 7 percent were at least 195 cm tall. A height of less than 175 cm was quite normal for a man in the 1950s: 42 percent of young men were shorter than 175 cm. This height is less common in today’s society: 12 percent of young men are shorter than 175 cm.

EDIT: we were raised on loads of dairy products (milk, cheese sandwiches, quark, yoghurt with fruits)....they contained natural growth hormones but might also have contained some artificial growth hormones.

The jump in average height inside 2 generations can't be explained by genetic and selective mating alone. Nutrition is a large factor in this!

    parent root
    6 points EmptyPossibility2551

It's probably mostly because now is one of the first times, everyone has enough acsess to food in the youth... especial the two world wars were leading to malnoutritment of young people and so to less growth in hight yhan what would be possible from a genitical standpoint

I'm also Irish and I'm 6"3, never felt huge here. But when I went to the Netherlands I felt like a wee baby boy

    parent root
    11 points Sacr3dangel

Very much a below average Dutch man here. I used to go to concerts and festivals everywhere in Europe. I had to stand up front or couldn’t see shit but the screens on the side.

Went to several festivals and concerts in the US and could stand comfortably in the back and literally look over people and see the stage and everything. It was glorious.

What they lack in height they make up in width tho.

    parent root

I lived in North America for nearly 2 years and I'm a 5'8" (173cm) woman. I felt like a giant while living there, towering over some men and even more women, when I feel only slightly taller than average at home in Belgium.

    Edit: conversion wasn't perfectly accurate

    parent root
    21 points JRS_Viking

Well the average for women in the US is 5'3.5" so you are actually a giant there but also a good bit over the Belgian average (5'5")

    parent root

If you happen to go the Netherlands, be sure to visit a castle.
Those were build back then with a LOT smaller people in mind, so you get this nice contrast of modern dutch length people navigating spiral stairs designed for hobbits, and medievil armour and weapons designed for 160cm tall knights.

    Muiderslot castle for best effect.

Oh and if you happen to go to Sardinia. Go look at some Nurage's (castles/fortified towns from 1000BC).
The hallways and doors in those things were small for the people from 1000BC already. Absolutely feels like halflings lived there.

    parent root
    7 points Eukarya_

I'm 173cm, too, from Spain (or rather 1,73m, as we say here, bless the easy metric conversions!) and I'm shorter than most men and taller than most women here. A sort of happy middle, which works very well for me.

jesus, what makes them say shit like this unironically? Do they really believe that? Could it be that they don't know their own heights?

Maybe because Daddy Trump has been height-frauding for decades and routinely claims 5-10cm more than he actually is they have a distorted perception of height? Like, they see trump who claims to be around 190cm but in reality is like 180cm they go and think "wow, I'm almost as tall as him. We are truly a nation of 6.5 feet giants. MURRICA!!!"

    parent
    48 points TheThiefMaster

The NYPD apparently leaked Trump's real weight and height as 5'10" and 287 pounds, which would be ~178cm / 130kg.

If that's accurate he's not claiming "5-10cm" more height, he's claiming twelve centimetres more height.

    parent root
    15 points Steppy20

He weighs more than I do? Wtf?

    parent root
    7 points wireframed_kb

Yeah, but those measurements were done by people willing to lie on his behalf. The measurements done at his processing, probably weren't. Providing the leak is genuine.

Trump has always lied himself taller and slimmer than he was, and given his diet and aversion to any sort of exercise, it's really hard to believe he is under 100kg.

    parent root
    6 points Perelly

130kg. Holy shit. That's a BMI of 41. You're officially fat at 30 and above.

    parent root

25 and above for overweight aka fat. 30 and above for obese.

40 is classed as "class III obesity" or "morbidly obese" by scales that have a 3rd category.

It's hard to say what his real height is. I do however believe that at one point he WAS around 185cm, as people get smaller with age.

I am more in awe that a lot of people (not just USians, but especially USians) claim to be 6' and 200lbs pure muscle mass as if these specs changes anything about them.

I have a friend who stated to be 6'3 and 220lbs just like Chris Hemsworth! Even if this was true, the only thing he would have shared with Chris Hemsworth was that they are both 6'3 and 220lbs. He still would lack the handsomeness, success and charisma of Chris Hemsworth in any capacity.

The shoulder thing too. American mens tailoring is hideous. They've always cut their suits with masses of shoulder padding to create a square silhouette, which aside from a few years of the 80s was considered gauche in Europe.

But the last few years it's been on steroids - they're now cutting shoulders that jutt an inch OVER the natural shoulder line, and padded to sit virtually square to the neck. It's comedy gold when you seem them move in a way that makes the whole edifice crumple inward to show how synthetic the whole looks is. Peak vanity.

It's absolutely hilarious that some seem to think this means Americans are broader shouldered.

    parent
  • 6 points Der_E

Isn't it that Americans get smaller in height because of the lack of nutrition?

    parent
  • 7 points Nerdy_Valkyrie

The only thing I was in awe of when I was in the US was seeing what obesity actually looks like. My country absolutely have overweight people and probably a handful of obese people too. But nowhere near the rate of obesity that I saw in the US.

I went to Six Flags Great America, near Chicago, and I noticed that all the roller coasters had an example seat where the line to get in starts. I didn't understand why until I saw a man sit down in it, and fail to be able to close the bar over his huge belly. I later saw people who couldn't even fit in the seat. Even seats built like a couch for two people to share. I even saw people stand in line all the way through, which could be as long as an hour sometimes, only to discover once they got to the front that they couldn't fit and had to walk out.

I have never seen that in my country. It's not a thing at all.

If I was in awe of anything that was tall it was the buildings. The joke "How do you spot a tourist in New York? They're looking upwards." is incredibly true.

The 6’ thing is actually kinda funny because most Europeans don’t use feet (or even know how long a foot is) and wouldn’t use ”6 feet” as the breakpoint for being ”tall and manly”.

    parent
  • 3 points Curious_Reference408

Tall white Americans are always tall precisely because their European ancestors came from typically tall countries like Norway and The Netherlands. This is like the mirror opinion to the 'I'm Swedish because one distant relative came to America from Sweden in 1672'

One thing that does shock me about Americans regarding height is how big the difference is between men and women in couples.

This is my biased opinion based on the Americans I know here in Europe, but almost all of them are couples of super tiny woman with super tall man. Like almost a meter difference in height for some of them.
