I applaud all the technical aspects of the show and it is an intriguing premise, but I didn't really enjoy the first episode. There was no relief from it being awkward, uncomfortable, and unhappy.
I kind of figure it can't go on like that because it's so popular, but maybe people identify with the tone. Again, not trying to take anything away from it, but it might be it's not for me.
EDIT: Just to say thank you to everyone who has responded. I will play it by ear whether I watch further. (There are so many shows I have never watched.)

It's a show about grief, man.
For me it is first and foremost a show about identity. And grief is one of many very important pieces of it. Others being relationships, upbringing, loyalty to ideas or people, family, whether you belong to a group that's privilged or exploited etc. Grief is a very important theme, but I wouldn't say the show is about it
Not really only the main character's outie suffers from grief. Everyone else has their own issues.
If there's an overall theme it's how our job defines us. What happens when we don't have a job - the outies on this show don't work. They just get paid for what their innies do. It's not healthy at all. They are not doing well.
Local Redditor thinks show can only be about one thing
Oh boy
The tone definitely lightens in some ways i.e there's more humor/jokes etc. A lot of satire too.
But the overall atmosphere is still bleak. Definitely stick with it
Not every good show is fluffy rainbows all the time
I actually disagree a bit with the comments—the show isn’t overwhelmingly bleak. It’s mixed pretty well with comedy and action. There IS relief, at times, but it’s never… not also about grief and capitalism.
The show is a thriller in some ways but it can also be slower paced and meditative. If that not for you, that’s okay
This
''Bleak'' is definitely not the word I would use to describe it
It definitely does pick up. There's more mystery than depression. There will always be an undertone of sadness but the intrigue really takes over.
No
It gets different kinds of depressing) But for me, it is also weirdly calming and satisfying. There will also be more events and comedic moments along the way, which will serve as a bit of a relief.
Sounds like it may not be for you. I like the dark and depressing tone , there are some humorous moments but it definitely never feels like a dark comedy
The first episode is actually one of the more upbeat ones.
As others have said, it's dark. There is the odd bit of humor in it though.
There are some very funny moments
The first episode is especially slow and miserable. It will pick up by the end of episode two.
By 3 or 4 you may be hooked
The characters at the start are at their lowest before their arcs start going up and down. It’s always difficult given the situation, but as things progress things happen that give them purpose and joy, compared to the total drab grey both Marks are living in the beginning. The humor also kicks in more after the start, I’d say.
No
I think it depends on what’s depressing you. When i watched the first episode, I was overwhelmed by the hopelessness of Helly’s situation — watching her come back from the stairwell each time made me feel like a rat in a box. The total lack of consent triggered a fight/flight response in me, and I had to walk away from my TV.
Without spoiling anything, the show is interested in growing its characters and the world. I think it’s less depressing as you watch it because you see moments of change. Even if you’re a “rat in the box,” the show at least allows that box to get a little roomier.
Yes, it gets better.
They fight back.
Ahahahahahaa no... No. Just... no.
You might want to find another show to watch
I thought it was awful. its hardly watched by anyone but has a loyal fan base
