Hey,
Random thought. In season 1, Mark is shown as a pretty regular drinker at night. Do you think an innie could ever feel an urge for something they cannot explain or name? Would it show up as feeling restless or on edge for no clear reason?

For sure. Addiction is physical in the body and has very little to do with memory. An innie would struggle with addiction just like an amnesiac would.
In Mark’s case, I think he did okay because he did his drinking at night, just as many functional alcoholics are able to get through a day of work without drinking before going home to binge.
This. Also addiction largely effects the “reptile brain” and how the brain produces dopamine, serotonin, and GABA in the case of alcohol. The severance process wouldn’t be able to get this “deep” without likely lobotomizing a person, if that makes sense. There’s no mention that it triggers an innie to be “happier” for example, other than having their past traumas and pain un-remembered. Clearly it’s just the “memory” portion of the brain that’s being affected, as they all seem to retain their personalities and whatnot.
Absolutely, they would feel the symptoms. Just as Mark says to Helly “you feel the effects of sleep”. No different to feeling the effects of a hangover or whatever the outtie experiences.
In the pilot episode, Cobel tells Mark that he looks hungover. He probably was, and is most days. Poor guy.
Great hangover remedy! Make your innie deal with the effects.
She knew he was because she was watching him like a hawk.
Oh yeah I'm aware. Fun thing to notice on rewatch. Didn't pick up on it the first time.
Absolutely- innie Mark would always be hungover, and may well be experiencing cravings or even withdrawal that he wouldn't understand.
This isn't discussed much on here, but it's kind of another example of outtie Mark's selfishness- he gets to be the drunk one, but not the hungover super tired one.
Yes! And innie Mark must think that being hungover is just how everybody feels all the time: anxious, tired, sweaty, having headaches and a slight nausea. No wonder he is so easy to control.
I thought of this recently in the conflict between my self that stays up late and my self that needs to get up on time for work. I wake up tired and ask “what was I even DOING, why do I feel like this”
And that is what Lumon is selling to the masses.
That is a question I’ve asked before. Imagine an innie craves a drink (or a hit of heroine, but the innie doesn’t even understand what they’re craving. If you’re an alcoholic and you find yourself in a dry county in the US, you at least know you want a drink. Mark doesn’t even know that.
There’s a certain amount of inconsistency here. When Helly tries to commit suicide and Mark rescues her. He’s sent back down by Graner. Mark must be pumping adrenaline. His heart must be rapidly beating.
You’d think he would get off the elevator in mid fight or flight reflex. Instead, as soon as we hear the ding, he’s back to normal.
His “normal” is to be in constant fight-or-flight. He probably just figured he needed a drink.
Symptoms are as much physical as mental so yes
pretty regular drinker at night is an understatement he a full blown alcoholic who is drinking from the moment he gets home till he passes out and during the day during the weekend
id think hed be having some incredible cravings while at work and substituting with something sweet like candy
mark would probably not be a very fun guy if he was kept at lumon for say 2 or 3 days
Where would an innie find alcohol if they needed to anyway?
Im sure cobel had some to get through the day of dealing with iMark lol
Hand sanitizer
I would guess no, at least not traditionally. Just based on a comment that I can’t remember where it from but someone found out outie Mark was a drinker and said “no wonder your eyes are always red” or something to that effect. I don’t think innie mark ever was shown to feel hungover or anything
That had nothing to do with his drinking.
He would cry in the parking lot before he went into work.

This one makes me chuckle, just a bit.
