S1 Spoiler but holy shit,Ms casey being his wife, great plot twist, I have a question tho, when the season was coming out, was this a plot twist theorized or obvious to everyone?
Og fan here. I was blindsided! I remember gasping and pausing on the picture because I was like “Ms Casey???” I must have missed the buildup to the reveal by being too distracted by everything else lol
Same. I was an OG fan from day one and the whole Miss Casey twist just hit me like a ton of bricks. I was already really liking the show for conventional reasons, the unique story, the quick pace, how empathetic the character were and of course well portrayed (I liked the work most of the actors had done prior). It totally just changed the stakes with how evil Lumon really was. And then the final moments of the finale. I hadn’t been blown away by a show in YEARS. And I see a lot of popular media for work. So yeah, still and especially after season 2, I find this show special.
I had no idea either, AND, the picture quality was so crappy, the reveal was actually lost on me, until my wife pointed out that the woman looked like Ms Casey, and I was still like, no....
Completely blown away. When they were about to show the closeup of that photo, like half a second before we saw her in that picture I was like "holy fuckin shit it's gonna be ms Casey in that"
There was just so much emotion in that scene with Mark and poor Alexa witnessing the whole thing. As an audience we already got a sense of how undone Mark could become but that was just after everything with seeing Grainer brained to death…. So yeah you’d expect him just to lose it…. So when theMiss Casey reveal was just like a bucket of ice water in addition to already how much sympathy you had for everyone at that moment because there was only one reason that had to be. They stole her.
This reveal forced me to re-assess my relationship with my phone lol. I saw he was taping the picture back together and knew the show would drag it out and focus on his emotions etc so I went for a scroll / replied to some messages. Realised afterwards there must have been something important the way the ep ended.
Then watched it carefully and realised how beautiful and intentional it was - the shots, angles, close-ups, music. Realised how much I was missing because of my stupid phone. Phone is now nowhere near when I watch shows like Severance
OMG!!! I loved the poster’s story because that is so me with knitting and crochet!!! I have my shows I can watch knitting and those I don’t dare!! You can guess what Severance is. Knitting time is for Severance podcasts (Which Ironically I was getting ready to listen before I decided to check Reddit ‘just quick’ lol!!!)
I had a feeling that maybe his wife was alive but had no idea who it might be. The obvious choice was Helly but then it was obvious it wasn’t her because they ran into each other in the first ep. I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me it was Ms Casey but it didn’t and holy shit was I shocked
It was definitely a bombshell. I like to think I’m fairly narratively savvy, and I never even considered it until it became clear they were about to make a big reveal. I chalk this up to incredibly strategic writing (cope?)
I think there was a small percentage of people who were speculating, but it wasn’t anywhere on the level of the “Helly is an important figure or Eaga” theories, which were gaining traction as we neared the finale.
Same. It was WAY obvious the effect her passing had on him and what a lovely person she was. I thought the show was going to pretty much all about the company and the journey as Innies. Which is what sold me on it to begin with. It’s funny that as later I’m trying to sell people on the show without revealing anything, most people were kinda resistant based on the fact that work stuff seemed kinda dull in a time were all struggling with the idea to head back into the office. Even fans of Mr. Robot were like…. Been there… done that…. Irrelevant.
I didn't realize she was his wife, but I knew that Ms. Casey was going to be important. Not because of anything in the story though. I was familiar with Dichen Lachman's past work on Dollhouse (where she basically had to be a new character every episode) and she was being credited as a regular so I just knew that there was going to be some twist with her.
Ugh. As someone who was completely shocked, I love this. I’m industry adjacent so know how these things work!! That makes total sense. But I also hate spoilers and it comes to shows I really like…. I try to leave ‘my cred’ at the title credits and not over analyze because I love surprises too.
i watched the show before my partner and he calls everything…not this one!! I was shocked by the reveal, and I was beside myself trying to not give anything away while I waited for his reaction. Did NOT see it coming 😏
I was rewatching it with my daughter (her first time) and I was positively vibrating trying not to spoil it. Up to that point she was invested, but I think starting to get a little bored of the office story and the “where is this all going?” of it all. Then she was like “WHATTT!”
The reveal is really what makes you go “oh, it’s THAT kind of show!” And then the last two episodes with the OTC just clinch it!
I'm not the most observant and almost never see plot twists coming so I was naturally completely blindsided by this one. My partner on the other hand has a great track record of predicting plot twists and she wisely suspected that maybe his wife wasn't really dead earlier in the season, but even she never expected it to be Ms. Casey.
I feel like the closer it got, the more obvious it became.
I dont think i had an "OH MY GOD!" moment, I kinda had a gradual lead up to figuring it out simultaneously with the reveal, like, "it makes perfect fucking sense!"
that is one of the things I LOVE about the show, it does such a great job of building up to a satisfying big moment
People look at me like I’m crazy when I tell them I prefer the weekly release. Don’t get me wrong if I hear about a show when it’s all out I’ll eat it up in a couple days but the ones that I have to wait for sit with me longer.
I did multiple rewatches of each episode while waiting for the next episode to be released. This sub was awesome back then with all the analyses and theories each week.
I’m not sure how people got this “gut feeling”… they played up the Mark/Helly romance so hard and gave us almost no information on Ms. Casey. For me it was totally out of left-field. Only when rewatching it do I pick up on the little hints, which really only come towards the end when Mark has his last wellness session.
Even then we don’t know that Gemma “ran into a tree” until S2. The only other hints at it I’ve noticed was the stuff Cobel was saying and doing (stealing Gemma’s candle, asking Devon if Mark ever feels like he “sees her,” which again come towards the end).
In season one we see Mark mourning her at the crash site after Petey’s funeral, I can’t remember if there’s a line of dialogue explaining it explicitly but it’s pretty clear from watching him cry while touching a tree next to a broken road barrier what happened (or at least what he thinks happened). Then we see innie Mark sculpt the tree in a wellness session. (That spoiler tag is probably overzealous but I want to be careful for wherever OP is at in s1)
We actually saw mark o in S1 go to the tree where she ran into, I think it was after Petey's funerals and later we saw him sculpt a tree from clay in his final session with miss Casey.
To me the romance with helly wasn't played up hard. The kiss came to me as a surprise. Their romance didn't make sense to me at the time.
Yeah someone else mentioned that, I forgot about that scene. I disagree, I thought it was pretty clear where Helly and Mark’s relationship was heading. The kiss didn’t come as a surprise to me at all. Hell even Dylan comments on it… “Baby Goats?” “Are you suggesting that ‘baby goats’ means sex with Mark S?!?” LOL.
Yeah, but Helly’s inital reaction it was sharp. LOL! Exactly how a pre-teen reacts when tease them about a crush. She totally was catching feelings at this point too.
The kiss wasn’t too surprising to me because of the way they both ended up just lighting up around each other. Even when Helly went into the break room and Milchick was like… Mark is trying so hard to make you happy…. I’m like YEAH! So the “easy to like” conversation kinda just laid things bout before the kiss. They may have kissed or at least held hands had no Milchick run into the room at that moment.
But I was glad she was the one to make the first move. It seemed like totally a Helly thing as Mark people realized there maybe a chance he never came back and Helly was as always eager to just barrel forward. Later I could totally see how Helena became just enthralled by it.
I thought it was perfect. Mark was a lot more contained and still was the boss. Although he admitted his feelings, his focus was on the mission and being brave and hopefully for the whole team. I’m so glad that Helly just could not contain herself at that moment, was amping herself up to tear the world a new one and ALSO get her kiss.
At first I thought he was going to get with miss Casey. He seemed so interested in her wellbeing and they had that moment where she said that, when she spent the whole day with them, it was the best day she ever had. But ofc in the grand scheme of things Its more fitting he's with helly.
There were moments that foreshadowed it that I noticed on rewatch. Mostly conversations between Milchick and Cobel about why she's doing what she's doing that hint at the severance barriers holding when they're together.
This doesn’t really answer the OP, but I was rewatching and kind of looking for clues for fun and there’s not much except in the reveal episode, there’s the moment where Cobel asks Devon if Mark ever thinks he sees Gemma and the camera lingers on her a fraction of a second longer than seems natural. And then as he’s taping the photo back together at the end of the same episode, a Mark voiceover is giving facts about his wife in the style of a wellness session and he says he loves all those things equally as he moves his finger to show her face.
We see outie mark had the same sort of candle ms Casey uses in the box of Gemma’s things though. I knew something was up with Ms Casey because of the candle.
There’s a small seed planted before the others mentioned here (more spoilers ahead):
Early in S1, Cobel lets herself into Mark’s house and lurks in the basement. While we might think she’s looking for Petey, she instead finds the “Gemma’s crafts” box that Mark had handled before. She takes the red-and-green candle, and it later shows up in iMark’s wellness session.
(All easy to miss especially if screen brightness is too low)
I did notice this, but I thought it was Cobel testing Mark. The wellness sessions appeared to be designed to test how well severed the innies are, so it made sense to me that she would take something of Gemma's and see if Mark would recognize it. It never occurred to me that she was also testing Ms Casey.
I did actually have an OMG moment , I was surprised that I picked up on this but not another thing that happened in season 2.
When mark passed ms.Casey in the hall for the break room, idk the scene sort of had a tension for me and I was like “wait, do they know each other? Wait is it possible that it is what I think it is? Honestly I wasn’t really thinking before that, it was that one particular scene that got me questioning and putting things together 😭
Interesting you picked up on that. In hindsight I bet that is the seed they were planting, but at the time I only read it as a brief moment of commiseration over having to engage with the Break Room.
And since they never showed us pictures or flashbacks/memories of her, I had a feeling that it could be someone innie Mark knows. Glad it didn't turn out to be Helley though lol
I guessed that we were going to already know her, but not that she would be Ms Casey, and only a few moments before we found out. So basically I was blindsided
OG fan. The Miss Casey twist was speculated, but the waters were muddied by something like an IMDB cast list spoiling it, so some people "guessing" it saw this. It definitely wasn't super obvious to everyone though. People definitely noticed that they never showed photos of her as pointing to, the identity of Gemma is going to be important, but that didnt necissarily lead them to Miss Casey.
Here's a great post from that time laying out the evidence for the other big S1 twist, which went unspoiled until the finale.

We turn our phones on DND before watching each episode for this exact reason lol!!
This was me but crocheting during it. I immediately did a rewatch, and realized what I missed haha
I’ve done this too many times
I had a feeling that maybe his wife was alive but had no idea who it might be. The obvious choice was Helly but then it was obvious it wasn’t her because they ran into each other in the first ep. I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me it was Ms Casey but it didn’t and holy shit was I shocked

I was blindsided, my sister saw it coming and yes she’s smug af about it 😑
Lucky guess 😂
I didn't even think that Mark's wife's identity even mattered. So I never put it to thought
Same. It was WAY obvious the effect her passing had on him and what a lovely person she was. I thought the show was going to pretty much all about the company and the journey as Innies. i just finished s1 and i’m so thankful i didn’t have to wait 3 years to watch the next episode holy shit
And it was released weekly so we had to wait a week between episodes!
People look at me like I’m crazy when I tell them I prefer the weekly release. Don’t get me wrong if I hear about a show when it’s all out I’ll eat it up in a couple days but the ones that I have to wait for sit with me longer.

Exactly! Unlike a show that gets dumped all at once and you have to stay off of reddit until you are done lol
This. It was a gut feeling, but nothing concrete. Until the reveal and then it was like omg 😱

Yeah definitely, but I’m suspect of anyone suggesting they caught that on the first go-around.
Yeah, it took me aback. I literally had to go back a few minutes and rewatch it to fully grasp it and make sure I was understanding it correctly.
This sub's theories ruined the twist for me.
Only started watching it last year but I was still like, "WHAAAAAAT???" lol
I did see a few people theorize it, yes! It was definitely a minority opinion, though
Completely shocked me
I was curious about the connection of Ms. Casey using Mark's wife's red n green candle but did NOT expect this reveal at all!
I‘m really bad with faces and didn‘t even recognize her from the torn photo. I had to rewind and ask my husband who she was
Nothing in the entire plot is ever obvious. I call bullshit on anyone who says they foresaw what's happening!
No one knew - it was an awesome reveal
No one knew - it was an awesome reveal
I had absolutely no idea. I wasn't engaging online for S1 though, because I came to it a few weeks late, so would have been spoiled.
I guess that makes me not an OG then 😂
I watched it when it first came out and no one was talking about it! I was stunned at the reveal and had no one to talk to lol
We suspected his wife was alive but had no idea it was Ms Casey.
Og fan - i was totally blindsided. What a great moment that reveal was!!
