This streaming service is the only one that has their best shows to be the most successful. While Netflix let their Banger shows die out while stranger things gets all the attention
Yes they’re a bit too self-censored and uptight it’s true. Although that shields them from being exploitative a lil bit, which is good fun for sure, but can make the bed for easy trashy stuff too
It’s a shame Netflix doesn’t allow their series’ time to grow. A lot of very well loved shows had a bit of a shaky start, Parks and Rec and Schitt’s Creek for example took a season or two to really get into their stride. Fortunately Apple TV seems to be throwing money at talented people and allowing for some really interesting stuff to be seen
The state of capitalism that we're in really doesn't allow for that anymore sadly. The same reason shows take so long between seasons or that we don't have long seasons anymore. It's so sad.
Probably why Apple TV is able to focus on quality stuff. They can risk running it at a loss just to be a value add for their other products and services.
I do have a question regarding this btw. I hear a lot of people saying they yearn for longer seasons, but there has to be a compromise I think.
For example, if I were to ask you to choose between these two options which would you prefer?
9-10 episodes per season released annually. So say S1 in 2026, S2 in 2027, S3 in 2028 and each season has 9-10 episodes.
18-20 episodes per season released every 2 years. So say S1 in 2026 and S2 in 2028 and each season has 18-20 episodes.
On one hand you get a new season every single year, but the season is short. On the other hand you get 18-20 episodes worth of content in a single season which allows more room for character development, slow-burn narrative, standalone episodes that fleshes out supporting characters without feeling unnecessary/taking up space in a smaller season, if it's a weekly schedule you get 4 months of discussion, but you'll have to wait 20-24 months for a new season.
Oh, I mentioned that as an addition to backup my comment (despite what the angy person in my replies has said), for me personally, I love shorter seasons, that tell a story, leaves you wanting more and doesn't overstay it's welcome as an overall series. Because of what I'd like to see from severance, I'd love for it to be 5 seasons (I won't get into what I'd like to see) but still a happy 10 maybe 12 episode season. And like you mentioned, once a year regularly.
There are some shows that do well in a 20+ season format like sitcoms, especially if there's great character progression like Brooklyn 99 or parks and recreation.
But severance I would not want to be that long and if it was I'd want it to be like 3 seasons maybe max, with multiple arcs being solved and raised throughout the season.
Genuine question, if companies aren’t making movies to earn money, what is the motivation ? Where do you think those outrageous costs are coming from ? Even if the industry were to break even you do realize that most studios make nothing and actually lose a shit ton on most movies/shows. They rely on that 1/10 breakout that makes them 10-50x over the franchise to foot the bill for the losers. Sounds like ur moreso nostalgic for how the industry worked 15 -30 years ago, which wouldn’t work today for a lot more reasons than just “Capitalism”. I suppose the convenience of the internet and streaming are just downstream of capitalism right, we should just throw it all out and leave in the Stone Age
They are making movies and shows to make money. I don't know what about my comment says otherwise. If Netflix isn't getting the viewership they think is needed, they cancel stuff. Because they're not going to keep sinking money into something that they feel is worth it. But I don't want to pretend like I know the ins and outs of studio decisions. But what I was saying is back in the day production costs were nowhere near the same as today so that's how series could simmer until it took off.
That’s actually straight up false and shows u don’t know much about the subject. If ur comparing a dollar to dollar budget then u have bigger misunderstandings in terms of inflation and the real value of a dollar today and 20-40 years ago. As well as how much the economy etc has grown
But I’m genuinely confused how ur claiming this when 1. Digital cameras are undoubtedly far more costly efficient nowadays 2. Filming gear is orders of magnitude cheaper by economies of scale 3. the use of cgi and tech massively reduced the need for massive costly physical sets 4. Infra is way more optimized bc the ecosystem of mid budget tv shows is way bigger nowadays
You're ignoring the astronomical cost of set design, actors pay, directors pay. The costs per episode that keep rising. When game of thrones was airing, they were constantly getting attention for having episodes cost multiple million dollars per episode and now that's the norm for big name shows. I don't know why you're getting so heated. And not providing a counter to why Netflix and other streamers let go of shows so quickly
lol again showing u don’t understand the industry . Game of thrones is a top tier in terms of production budget tv show, the economics of those shows work way differently, they are banking on a massive existing fan base to sustain the show and it’s almost a self fulfilling prophecy, the more shows like that u create the more viewers expect that quality and the more u have to spend on other shows like it. What i said before is the truth for the vast majority of shows, u seem to be fixated on what is like the top 1% of the whole industry , bc again u have no idea what ur talking abt
To be fair, Stranger Things is pretty good. But Netflix does cast aside some very good shows too quickly.
It’s also how little advertising I see for Apple shows. I caught the first couple of episodes of ‘See’ on a flight and that prompted us to get it. Then watched ‘Severance’ on a whim and was immediately hooked.
Apple has so many bangers, and it seems like I rarely ever see any promo for them.
I think the show that got us watching was the M. Night Shyamalan's Servant.
You're on point about their lack of advertising. We stumbled on Severance and watched because we liked Adam Scott from his performance in Parks and Recreation. But after that first episode, we were hooked. Everything we've watched on AppleTV has been incredibly good especially Silo and Murderbot
Absolutely loving that show. But where the hell do Apple advertise. I’m still not sure how I stumbled on it. I don’t recall a single advert. It should be drawing millions of viewers but nobody knows about it.
very weirdly, the only time i have heard of this show before now is when Apple ran an ad for it on a Samsung smart fridge and it sent a woman into psychosis.
I read somewhere that M. Night Shaymalan said he'd originally planned six seasons but, for what ever reason, only made four. There won't be any more, sorry.
I will NEVER forgive Netflix for dropping Kaos. That show was incredible and had the makings of a brilliant universe. As I understand it, it was a big seller for them too. But they canned it. Unforgivable.
Apple TV seems to prefer to create a prestige portfolio rather than a portfolio of view hits. And that is where the difference lies.
Their aim is to have content that is made by and for adults. Netflix is for teens, and quick watches which means simple concept shows that they can get to 3-4 seasons without spending too much. Wednesday and Stranger Things come to mind.
When they try to create quality, they cut corners at times (The Sandman) and then bury it (Messiah, The OA, etc). Unless it is European, and even then 1899 did not get a second season.
The days when Dark was a small show that augmented in viewership from word of mouth are over in Netflix.
Well another difference is, netflix exists only for streaming. It has no other sources for revenue. Apple has the streaming as an additional product, but its stil a big tech company. They can afford to not make a lot of revenue. They sell enough hardware to compensate.
Right. Apple’s profit margin was46% last year. $1B loss is a drop in a bucket business write off. I’d rather them give us quality shows like Foundation, Pluribus and Severance to state a few instead of chasing the $$$.
That is partially true. But when Netflix was starting they were less likely to cut shows. Now it's the norm and it's actually doing the opposite. People are not bothering watching shows, out of fear that they will be cut.
I think Netflix needs to copy the European models. Do shows that are 1-3 seasons MAX. Do them at once if they can. Play them to the end and do not expand them.
If they have to have lineup that's one season cut into two parts, the better. But they need an ending.
Its a self fulfilling prophecy. Ppl have so much to choose from they switch to something they like more or something they can binge instead of watching it per week. Meaning they are less likely to finish watching if it doesn't immediately click. Which then Leeds to more shows being cancelled because they don't hit the targets
This is a really good point. I’d add one thing on top it seems Netflix likes to keep churning new stuff to attract subscribers. I think there’s a once we have them we have them ideology behind what they’re doing so the focus is always on bringing in new subscribers. IE teens once they’re old enough will get their own sub separate from their parents.
I read an article a few years ago that mentioned how it's cheaper for Netflix to pump out new shows instead of continuing the good shows they do have. Something along the lines of how after s3, cast and crew can start negotiating more money so instead of paying more money to keep a good show running, Netflix will often cancel the series. That's why a lot of shows on their platform don't often make it past s3/4
I have considered that. I think i remember that old tv had that problem from a tax benefit standpoint. They'd create tons of pilots and first seasons and if they found it meh, they'd write them off.
It's well known that Apple TV is not profitable, and in fact loses a lot of money, but Apple seems to be okay with this. It's a loss leader for other Apple services, and a way to boost public perception of the company.
I have a friend who works for Apple TV and he said their entire philosophy is different from any other media company. Their goal is not a delivery system, not a network, not awards, not even money. It’s the same goal Apple has always had: to create an ecosystem.
If you own all Apple products the experience is seamless. Control your phone from your Mac, control your Apple home from your Apple TV, get Siri to play music on your HomePod, connect your AirPods to your tv etc. And then they have you locked in to paying premium prices + getting 30% of the money you spend on apps in their ecosystem.
I keep saying Apple is what HBO was for cable. Quality shows over quantity. Netflix is cable, endlessly scrolling through the same old movie catalogue and bad shows until you land on one good show and then it’s probably going to be a foreign show/movie.
With HBO poised to no longer be reliable in delivering quality, Apple TV definitely seems to be the platform that’s taking over that mantle, luckily at just the right moment. Long may it continue.
It’s also the only one that’s hasn’t added adverts back to their paid service. I’m watching as much as possible on Apple TV right now because their shows are great AND they are not force feeding me adverts like the other big services.
From what understand, Apple is extremely picky around the shows they green light.
One of Apple’s main assets is simply its name. Investing in and keeping a good reputation around their brand is paramount. What if the Apple brand was suddenly associated with Hallmark type movies?
Stranger things wasn’t for me. I stopped watching after the first season but based on the hype that first season got and the maintained popularity I’d say it probably deserves all of the attention it gets. Netflix does have an issue with keeping the shows that have smaller fan bases running. But the big hits seem fine for the most part.
The show was fine for what it was for the first few seasons. Then it’s just repeating itself. And now all the kids are over or near 30…. It’s ridiculous.
Every show I've watched on there has had s2 renewals before s1 even finishes. Even shows that aren't home run masterpieces but still entertaining (Your Friends and Neighbours and Stick were great but no Severance/Pluribus) have second seasons on the way. and I cannot wait for them.
Even shows like Dickinson got four seasons. I think the only show that got canceled after one season was Constellation. It’s a shame. I liked that show.
Fully agree. Netflix does not let their shows breathe and gain an audience. Nor are there shows promoted enough. Marketing can make or break the success of a show. Word-of-mouth is not enough to sustain something to success.
They are always far too quick to cancel some of their best shows. There’s far too many to list. There’s quite a few I cannot forgive them for and honestly would take too long to listen because Netflix is a murderer. I would do things to get more of KAOS, The Midnight Club, Mindhunter, I am not OK with this, The Residence, Shadow and Bone, Archive 81, First Kill, 1899, and so so so many others. I’ve probably watched KAOS a dozen times.
My rule with Netflix is 3 seasons must be out before I start a new series. I trust apple a bit more and only wait until there is a confirmed 2nd season before I start anything.
Netflix has become overwhelming for me. There are too many choices and it’s too difficult to find the things I want to actually watch. I’m considering canceling.

we are just lucky that Apple does‘t care about tv plus burning through money, since they want to create a valuable portfolio of shows, but that will dry up at some point.
They've been cancelling things early. The one that hurt the most is Pachinko. It's technically not cancelled but it's been so long that it's pressumed dead. It would be such a shame to not finish it. It's such beautiful and unique story.

they are taking the quality over quantity approach
Yes, they have quality writing, a bit like HBO used to but without the nudity.
They actually started to allow more and more nudity. Pluribus, Disclaimer, The Morning Show, and a few others have had full nudity.
Wait I've been watching Pluribus and I didn't see any full nudity, when did that happen?
Cmon. You missed zosia’s behind?
I wouldn't classify that as full nudity personally
How about the bathtub scene with the Elvis Presley wannabe?
I think they were referring to the scene where Carol sees the body parts.
The scene where all the women get out of the hot tub
I noticed that they were very careful not to show any nipples or bush in that scene.
I didn’t pay close attention to but they definitely showed nipples before in other shows.
I was surprised by this. An actual woman? Naked? And no 50 yo guys dick? What year is it 2005?
As If Disney owned HBO. Which is too bad - too much creative constraint.
Yes they’re a bit too self-censored and uptight it’s true. Although that shields them from being exploitative a lil bit, which is good fun for sure, but can make the bed for easy trashy stuff too
Ahem, Invasion, Ahem, Surface.
They aren’t too bad on quantity either.

Apple hasn't finished any of their new lineup of edgy shows with a deep plot. Time will tell, but I am worried this post will end up /r/agedlikemilk.
To be fair, Stranger Things is pretty good. But Netflix does cast aside some very good shows too quickly.

It looks like that story was a hoax.
They advertised that everywhere for a month before it came out
There were ads all over Reddit for it, what ads do you see on Reddit?
I run pihole so see very few ads in general.
*blocks ads “where are the ads?”
Will do, thanks for the recommendation!
Slow Horses is amazing
Where/when is the next season of Servant???? 😭
I read somewhere that M. Night Shaymalan said he'd originally planned six seasons but, for what ever reason, only made four. There won't be any more, sorry.
Nooooooo… seriously? That’s disappointing. I really liked this show :(
It made me really sad to learn that, too, because it seemed as though the story wasn't complete
Agreed! By now I barely remember how it ended but they absolutely had so much more to work with!
It was just a storyline we haven’t seen before with an interesting pov. Truly bummed to see it won’t return.
I will NEVER forgive Netflix for dropping Kaos. That show was incredible and had the makings of a brilliant universe. As I understand it, it was a big seller for them too. But they canned it. Unforgivable.
They dropped a lot of great shows after just one season. It’s a sin.
Nah, Stranger Things had 2 good season, then downfall. Overhyped, flat storylines with way too many characters.
Netflix typically does 3 season contracts. If it’s TOO successful, the creators want more money for season 4 and beyond. Cheaper to just cancel
“Stranger things is pretty good” son😭😭😭😭😭😭
[deleted]
No one said they did. We’re comparing platforms, and discussing how those platforms handle the shows they offer.
But… thanks for the clarification, I guess?
Apple didn't create most of the shows on Apple TV either.

Apple TV costs them a billion dollars a year and it’s still practically a rounding error for them lol
Right. Apple’s profit margin was46% last year. $1B loss is a drop in a bucket business write off. I’d rather them give us quality shows like Foundation, Pluribus and Severance to state a few instead of chasing the $$$.

Capitalism is always the reason
I have considered that. I think i remember that old tv had that problem from a tax benefit standpoint. They'd create tons of pilots and first seasons and if they found it meh, they'd write them off.

Dark would have been better suited on Apple TV for real.
I have a friend who works for Apple TV and he said their entire philosophy is different from any other media company. Their goal is not a delivery system, not a network, not awards, not even money. It’s the same goal Apple has always had: to create an ecosystem.
Can you explain what they mean by ecosystem please?
If you own all Apple products the experience is seamless. 10/10 would do it again though lol

Right! This show reminds me of my beloved OA and Kaos. I still can't believe Netflix cancelled them.
This is one of the posts of all time
I’m still bitter that Netflix cancelled Inside Job.
It’s cause apple has other forms of revenue, even if they lose a billion on Apple TV that is Pennie’s compared to what they make.
Meanwhile Netflix only has streaming so if a show isn’t attracting enough viewership then it’s going to get axed
The two companies are in very different situations
I literally can’t believe that I just started Ted Lasso. Already one of the best shows I’ve ever watched and I’m only like 6 episodes in
You should watch Shrinking after.
Eh, the show really fell off on the middle. I wish most of its popularity went to stronger fare. Rip Santa Clarita Diet and The Get Down
Another reminder for me to watch The Get Down S2, really loved S1. First thing I've seen Yahya Abdul-Mateen in.
S3 was the best season of Stranger Things… S1 was the worst.
The show was fine for what it was for the first few seasons. Then it’s just repeating itself. And now all the kids are over or near 30…. It’s ridiculous.
Save the OA lol
Apple TV is also the only other streaming platform with a user interface as smooth and interactive yet simple as Netflix.
All the others ( Max, Prime, Disney) are absolute garbage when browsing.

How are y’all liking Pluribus? It almost lost me after the pilot but I’m loving it now, that last episode was incredible.
Netflix has become overwhelming for me. There are too many choices and it’s too difficult to find the things I want to actually watch. I’m considering canceling.
Their menu is unusual these days. I only go there if I know exactly what I want to watch and search for it. The navigation is a joke.
I was unaware of this competition that people are concerning themselves with.
God bless Tim Apple PBUH 🙏

I don’t like everything on Apple TV but it’s the only tv sub I’ve ever paid for.
When I like something they release, I really like it.
Dunno why all of their movies are so damn awful, though.
Apple clearly wants high end stuff produced in house. Netflix is about volume.
