Pluribus is interesting, well done, visually appealing, looks great on Apple TV, all of that.
But every 10 minutes watching it, I think of Severance.
Because as good as Pluribus is, Severance is just on a complete other level.

Its a little premature to compare the two. Severance has had 2 full seasons with months and months to digest it. Pluribus is not even done with its first season.

The current episode got me, tbh. It was so calm that the few explosive moments truly knocked me asunder. The barbs. The fireworks. I gasped, I teared up.
I really enjoyed it too. I loved the cinematography of him travelling.
Yes, it was all so gorgeous and soooo effective and really communicating the scale of his journey. The isolation and the hardship. The monotony and the endurance.
For a character who we haven’t seen interact with anyone other than the hive, I feel so connected to him and understand his perspective just through this journey.
Like this episode was kinda what Chikai Bardo was to Gemma—the rapid humanizing of a character who only existed in the backdrop.
The English learning was great too. Watching the “my name is Manousos” bit slowly change from “I am learning to speak English” to “this is how I will introduce myself” to “this is how I keep myself going” to “this is my mantra to cling to life” to “I’m just repeating this at death’s door with no idea what I’m even saying at this point.” Brutal and so good!

I hope so, I'm toying with maybe picking it up again. I'm not expecting severance-quality, and I love a slow burn, but I'm not sure it's even mid. I think I'll wait to see what you all say when it's finished, and whether it's legit or it's been a case of emperor's new clothes. It could also just be me - my kids loved the last of us, but having watched and read a lot of really good zombie sci fi, including the cordyceps concept, I got bored with it early on and they're still annoyed with me!
I will say the discourse similarities between severance season two and Pluribus are giving me ptsd lol. Endless complaining about pacing and being a slow burn.
I have ptsd over the endless nonsensical crackpot fan theories surrounding both shows. If Reddit wrote these shows, there would be constant twists out of left field that make no sense whatsoever and would break the established rules of these fictional universes. I don’t mind Severance’s pacing at all, but the pacing on the last episode of Pluribus was overkill for me.
I compare it to Better Call Saul. That show took its damn time in the first two seasons and became too slow and self indulgent.
It’s not necessarily an attention span thing. It can also be a style preference.
It’s funny, I have ADHD and a terrible attention span in real life, but for some reason I absolutely adore super slow shows like Pluribus and BCS that take their time to flesh out every nuance. I couldn’t tell you why or how that works, but it does.
Maybe because less going on means less to remember, and less to distract.
And with a show, it’s not like you need to be productive personally. I think getting sucked in to a show that’s moving slowly isn’t necessarily at conflict with ADHD, which I also have.
I didn’t like the repetition of the recording. And I also didn’t need to feel Carol’s loneliness. I felt it full force the moment the hive left town. I knew she wasn’t there yet, but I was.

Pluribus is also a very different kind of show. It's not actively building on mystery boxes like severance, it is much more character driven and the mystery element takes a back seat.

I'm the opposite. Severances reliance on the mystery box has worn a bit thin for me by now. Pluribus is so refreshing how it runs full speed at the concept. Pluribus can be slow but not in a way that it's artificially stringing the plot along.
I agree. It’s honestly insane for me to even admit because I was such a fan when s1 of severance came out. I remember enjoying s2, but frustrated with a lot of it. The gap between seasons isn’t helping. Pluribus is honestly refreshing. I loved rhea seahorn in bcs and Gilligan is an awesome director who’s been writing this show years in advance, so I feel like there’s a lot more direction in terms of what the show is actually about. Whereas severance seems to be making it up as they go along and explains why there’s so many unanswered questions still.

Breaking Bad Season 1 was good.
Severance Season 2 was strangely hard to follow but beautiful to watch and mind-bogglingly self indulgent.
Breaking Bad every season after season 1 was the best television ever made.

I find when I watch Stranger things I always compare it to the crow every 10 minutes. And I’m going “this show sucks compared to the crown. There’s too many monsters and not enough dramatizations of political and royal events that happened throughout 20th century England.”

Apples and oranges. I don't think Pluribus can reasonably be described as a comparable "mystery box" show. That said, Pluribus is brilliant, and I think it is going to get a lot of Emmy nominations next year.
Also, weird to see so many people here calling Pluribus boring. It takes its time, it has a lot of those drawn-out "Where are they going with this?" scenes that are a signature of Vince Gilligan's work. He is a very "show, don't tell" creator. But I don't see how that equals boring, unless you have a weirdly short attention span or cannot absorb any of the meaning those scenes are conveying.

As much as I love Severance I actually have been more excited for Pluribus episodes and watch more of the overviews and theory videos. It's just more intriguing. I love Severance too so that's high compliments. The show is filmed just as carefully and the acting... oh man. So so good. Tonights' my birthday and I'm most excited about watching Pluribus tonigh!

Severance is very self indulgent and it’s hard to follow.
Vince Gilligan made two of arguably the best TV shows of all time and Pluribus is only in its first, yet to finish season. The last few episodes of Pluribus’ first season could easily top Severance, but only time will tell. Comparing the two is a bit premature.

I'm still baffled by the response to that episode. I knew some people wouldn't like it but I didn't think it'd get THAT much backlash. Makes me wonder how the fuck they stuck through the show to get to that point if their attention span can only handle "Oh, hey Ellie! What are you doing standing in that doorway?" Netflix slop
I wasn’t surprised by it—I enjoyed the episode but could feel my ADHD brain shifting uncomfortably for long stretches of it, so I certainly GET the complaints in the broader sense.
It’s just I realized I was the issue and worked on my attention span a bit. And when that doesn’t work I give myself the grace to pause episodes to fuck around a bit before locking in again.
And now I have a new appreciation for art that is willing to sit with you without handholding. No second screen catering. No insecure antics to make sure everyone is entertained enough. Just pure story telling and atmospheric moments.
Pluribus is slow because it’s a story (in part) about isolation and the monotony of said isolation slowly breaking someone down. Cobel’s episode was slow because it was about a small, slow town creaking into life for only a moment.
It’s not for everyone but it isn’t a lack of greatness. It’s just a type of storytelling that is an acquired taste and demands a bit more of its audience.
It’s when people devalue the show/episode for being slow where lose my sympathy. You can not like it and still realize it’s doing something intentional and great.
Slower art isn’t lesser art.
I like that Pluribus balances out the slow pace by promptly getting right to what would typically be late in most alien/pod people/invasion arcs - virtual complete assimilation in episode 1 as opposed to after several episodes with overly dramatic cliffhangers that reveal what’s happening in bits and pieces. This way the scale of the crisis is immediately evident, and the world-building can take its time as we and Carol learn further compelling details.
I hate what the internet has become. Not all art needs to be compared. Not all thoughts need to be shared.

Pluribus and Severance are two different styles. Severance is akin to a Murder Mystery while Pluribus, much like Gilligan's other shows, is like a modern western. Out of the three Gilligan shows Pluribus feels the most accesible to get into.
While I adore Severance I do like how slow and gorgeous Pluribus is. Makes the funny moments stand out much better.

I started watching Pluribus last night and blew through 4 episodes pretty quickly. It's definitely well done and although it has a similar overall concept as some of the classics it definitely has a unique twist or two. Probably more...
I think the less someone knows about it beforehand the better. The discovery of the situation in the first episode is a fun ride.
Whilst Severance is mostly about the mystery of Lumon and everything surrounding, Vince Gilligan shows are mostly about exploring the characters. There wont be many twists because it is not the goal of the show and the situation of the hive mind is just a setting to explore Carol and the other survivors. At least this is what I got from the first few episodes, and in this way it feels really similar to Better call saul
Maintaining a strong mystery is almost always the key for all the best science fiction shows. It drags people forward driven by their curiosity. The Expanse and Silo are just two that come to mind along with Severance, of course. I'm hoping that they explore the mystery of the origin of the hive mind but it's possible that they will just leave that part as unattainable.
Severance has plenty of interesting characters and character development. The duality is a challenging thing to play as a actor and it brings a lot of color to each of their stories. Although the mystery of Lumen is the foundation of the show there really is a lot of character development that happens to both the innies and the outies. There is layers of nuance and similarities between the two valences of each individual that has been severed.

I'm into it. I'm a fan of Rebecca Ferguson and she's the main character of the show. It's a adaption from books which almost always brings a rich background and creates interesting characters.
Two seasons have been released and two more are in production. The show isn't gonna be canceled unexpectedly. It has a planned endpoint where everything is properly wrapped up. It's safe to become invested in the show which is kind of rare in science fiction. I've had so many compelling shows that didn't make it to a proper conclusion that left a cliffhanger as the epitaph for the show.
They filmed season 3 & 4 consecutively which probably saved quite a bit of production costs. Some people were hoping for a late 2025 release for season 3 but Apple hasn't made any announcements yet. Should be soon.
Even though they have all the footage for both seasons in the can they're probably gonna spread it out with a similar gap in time. Apple doesn't have a ton of content so they have to string us along to hold onto subscribers.
I just did my second re-watch of Altered Carbon. It's a one and done season 1 that ties everything together well enough to be satisfied with. There is a season 2 but if I were you I'd skip it. The show was drastically changed by a character recast for the main character. While it's internally consistent with the Altered Carbon universe the actor didn't carry the weight of making it believable. Human consciousness is basically immortal and the flesh is interchangeable.

Season 1 of Severance was masterful to me, but only once the full season concluded. Season 2 had some stellar moments, but was overall way less successful.
Pluribus has been great so far.
I've enjoyed parts of pluribus immensely, and been completely bored many many times. Was never bored with any episode of severance. I'd say if severance is a 9 then pluribus is a 7 thus far at best.
It's a great concept, production quality through the roof and acting is superp but it is simply boring with very little happening for huge stretches of episodes that already have very few characters of any substance to invest in. It's a shame, I hope they really stick the landing in a big way. If this is the show and we're in for four seasons of this it'll be a grind.
Absolutely hit the nail on the head. I’m all for a slow build and tension drama, but a lot of it has left me with that nagging “Christ almighty let’s get to it already” feeling. But the production value and overall story arc has kept me invested enough.

I remember on e thing I told myself once 6 episodes in to the first season, telling myself "I really wish I could read this series as a book!". In many ways, the thrill of this show felt like that. And I don't think any other show has come close to it.
The only thing both shows have in common is that they have sci-fi and mystery elements, but that aside they’re chalk and cheese…
Love Severence, but Pluribus has completely failed to capture me so far. Every episode I live in hope that it finally delivers and “gets to the meat of it” so to speak, but it never does. So, unfortunately, I think what we’ve seen thus far may in fact be the meat of it, and if so it’s horribly unsatisfying.

After 7 episodes I finally have to admit to myself Pluribus doesn't work for me. I give serious hard SF a fair shake since it's rare. But the show grates at all levels: irritating cast, bland writing, and art direction are all tedious and uninspired to me. It may still be a notch or two above 3 Body Problem, but that program ranks as one of the poorest SF shows of the 21st century.
At this point I only continue to watch out of commitment to the genre, alas.

Completely agreed, I think Pluribus is a beautiful looking, wonderfully acted show that has nothing interesting to say. I find it sterile and uninterested in the implications of its own concept. High concept fiction is supposed to explore a facet of the human condition in order to bring a deeper understanding of ourselves, others, and/or the world around us. E.g. I was thinking about Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind earlier, and how poignantly it talks about the value of grief, of pain, of memory. It asks us - would you do it? Is it worth it?
Severance - apart from having a much more lovable cast of characters - asks questions of identity, personhood, what makes us humans even in the face of oppression (and more). Those themes were wonderfully explored even in the first few episodes of the first season.
What I find obnoxious about Pluribus is that it could in theory pose interesting questions about, say, the value of individuality vs the grief it generates in the world, collective vs individual, is the hivemind actually the good guy? etc. but it seems to dismiss those questions outright by fully endorsing Carol’s viewpoint with seemingly no room for dissent. Anybody who disagrees with her is either a hivebot or depicted as a moron and/or a self serving fool. In any case, they are given very little time to show their point of view and why say, extreme collectivism may actually be a good thing. It seems intellectually lazy to me and coupled with 1) (IMO) a lack of a proper emotional hook and 2) the absolutely glacial place of the show, it all ends up being… well, boring as hell.
Severance was pretty weak after season 1
Despite the obvious similarities, such as the beautiful cinematography, unusual story lines, mix of oddball humor and deep emotion, etc., I think Pluribus and Severence are fundamentally different and very difficult to compare.
Severence is a puzzle box, with tons of subtle clues to be noticed and analyzed, and lots of shocking revelations. Yes, we care about the relationships between characters, but a huge and complex mystery hangs over the story. By design it is often hard to know what's true and what might be misdirection, and we're constantly confronted with new information that doesn't make obvious sense.
On the other hand, so far at least, I'm taking Pluribus mostly as a character study, full of metaphor and philosophical inquiry. It's pitting free will against the collective. It's asking about the nature of happiness and life's purpose. And so far, there have not been a lot of shocking developments that cause one to reconsider what's happening in the story.
With Severence, we want to know why things are happening, or even what the hell is happening, or where this could possibly go next.
With Pluribus, we're watching characters change in the face of unprecedented challenges. I'm basically taking at face value what I'm seeing. At least at this point in the series, I'm not really focused on why the aliens sent the instructions for the virus, or exactly how the hive mind communicates, etc. I'm just waiting to see what the characters will do next.

I started watching Pluribul when the 4th episode came out, while I was bored I wanted to find something with the same vibe and came across Severance. And oh my god... I love this show! I watched all the episodes within 2 weeks.
Now I'm at episode 7 of Pluribus I think it's not my vibe at all, I don't how slow it is and the plot is at the same place as it was a few episodes ago... But I'm so glad I found Severance instead.

I think I am more drawn into severance because it has a very unique world. Both conceptually and aesthetically.
Pluribus is basically set in the normal world just with people acting a little differently so I’m not really as transported I guess. But I’m still loving it and excited to see how the season finishes out.
i’m losing my mind a little bit here and maybe my head is just too far up gilligan & co’s ass but my god how quickly we forget our history
severance would (probably) not exist without breaking bad. it’s regularly cited as a game changer for the tv industry to a sopranos level in terms of “oh this medium can be as good if not better than movies.” it helped pave the way for shows like severance to be greenlit, when in other eras they may have been passed over not being widely palatable enough.
also imo, breaking bad and better call saul have played a not insignificant role in shaping severance’s style. the liberal use of oners, the long sequences of characters just doing tasks (sometimes making you work or wait to understand what exactly the task even is), the step-by-step way mysteries unfold, even the immense trust in the audience are all classic signatures of these vince gilligan shows. severance obviously has its own unique take on these things which i absolutely love, but idk these elements feel so inspired by these other shows that it honestly feels almost blasphemous to me to say the former pales in comparison to the latter lol
also sorry this is probably gonna be the part that gets me downvotes BUT……..breaking bad and better call saul have been solid beginning to end and stuck the landing 10s across the board for their finales. i am extremely confident that pluribus will be no different. i cannot say i am as confident that severance will stay good and stick the landing. i hope it will, and maybe im only saying this bc i haven’t gotten a ben stiller show beginning to end yet so i dont have anything to judge against. however, if i had to bet on how they’d stack up once they’ve both finished, my money’s on pluribus sorry🙊

Take Pluribus on its own terms. It’s brilliant and unexpected at every turn. Just like Severance!
Honestly? I'm loving them both about the same, Pluribus had me immediately drawn in and focused from the first episode, just like Severance did.

I had been wanting to watch severance since it premiered, but life. So I finally got sometime last week, got hooked and now I’m OBSESSED. 2027 is toooooo long. I saw pluribus and was like, this looks cool. Obviously, they are two different shows, but, comparing the way they make me feel… I was hooked on severance since the first episode. And I couldn’t put it down, despite the anxiety I could feel in my body while watching. I enjoyed the first episode of Pluribus and I am looking forward to watching the next, but, so far, I can put it down.
I think both shows are great for different reasons.
Pluribus is important, Pluribus is mysterious.
Breaking Bad was my favorite TV show of all time until I watched Severance, which says a lot because nothing else was even close.
Plurbius is nothing more than okay for me right now. I’ll probably skip season 2 then binge 1-2 right before season 3
I’m enjoying Pluribus more than I enjoyed Severance Season 2.
Two completely different shows in every way, but okay.
If the alien virus infects the severed people, will the severed people (in the basement) join the unity or their brain frequencies won’t vibe with them? Could the severance procedure be a cure to the alien virus/frequency?
Pluribus opening sequence was filled with the same creeping dread as midway points of Severance. Pluribus stated “this is not normal.” Severance said “please enjoy this puzzle box equally.”
They both approach seemingly unlikely situations with similar views: MC are likeable enough until they don’t need to be, supporting cast is utilized perfectly and the actual world mechanics remains a mystery. Even if this show is a single serving season, it’s enjoyable balance of absurd and human.
Also makes Albuquerque look like a good time.
The cast isn’t as strong or as likable as the severance crew. That’s it, I think the writing probably will hold up, but this cast isn’t on the same level.

I thought season 2 of Severance was weaker than season 1. Still good but there were a couple episodes I didn’t care for. Pluribus hasn’t missed yet. No spoilers though I haven’t seen the latest episode
Thank you. I've seen the promos. This makes me feel better about the fact I'm gonna wait until Severance 3, or at least silo, is on Apple to get it again. I can't afford to have streaming services all the time. I will look forward to Pluribus as a yummy snack and not a whole meal.
On that note…. Does anyone have any other great shows to watch?! Just finished severance and watch Pluribus every week!
Complete opposite here. I couldn't get through Severance but Pluribus is like crack to me.
Severance is a bit overly complicated
besides being on apple tv they dont have much in common so I dont get comparing them. People are okay to like them both
I haven't watched severance because it looks like one of those pseudo intellectual shows where they deliberately hide what's going on just to string you along for another week. Guaranteed it will make it to cancellation without ever paying off anything of substance. All they have is "the mystery". Maybe I'm completely wrong but that's what it looks like to me.
Comparison is the thief of joy.
Feeling completely the opposite. Severance starts very strong, but the cracks in the world-building become obvious pretty quickly and the serious bits and the comedy are mixed in a very jarring manner several times that makes it difficult to keep suspending disbelief towards the central conceit.
The world is both too grounded, and too fantastical at the same time. I would be very surprised if Severance has any sort of satisfying conclusions. I like it but it isn't *great*. It reminds me more and more of a Valve game and less and less of an important story. Entertaining, but ultimately junk food.
The economy of storytelling and the personal conflicts presented by Pluribus are thus far on a level I haven't seen since Westworld Season 1. It isn't quite to that "Anthony Hopkins at his absolute peak" level, but it's probably better than WWS2, which was no slouch either. Even if there's no "conclusion" to the mysteries presented by Pluribus, it already looks like its setting up truly deep metaphorical commentary on the human condition in a way that all other genres cannot.
Manhunter was great Ozark was great Fargo was amazing these shows on Apple are blah 👎
I enjoy both shows and could not compare the two in any way, other than they are tv shows, and they are on apple tv.
I prefer pluribus so far.
Pluribus is just visual storytelling and expose on human condition of loneliness. Idk I find it sort of boring as much as I try to watch it. Just a drag
