The exact wording of the casting call was: ”Miss Hannah. The character portrayed is a young female 14-18 years old, to play 14, open ethnicity. She works in middle management. She was pulled out of school and fast-tracked into a job. She presents overwhelmed and scared but may be more in control than she seems”. So the answer would be 14.
After they cast Sarah Bock, who was 15 at the time and 16 when they got around to filming, a few things changed. The name became Huang. The ”overwhelmed and scared” was replaced with a kind of Hitler youth confidence that scares people, especially when combined with Sarah’s trademark side-eye of death. It was Stiller who picked up this quality. Sarah:”there was a specific moment when we were doing the ball game scene with Mark S. Ben told me to just stare at Mark for a really long time, almost like an eye-contact contest. He was like, “Once it feels like you’re staring for too long, stare for like three seconds longer.” (Variety). ”When I played her, I didn’t feel very scary. But at the end of the day, crew members would come up to me like, “You freaked me out. You’re terrifying.” I was like, Okay, heard. I understand who this character is.” (Vulture)
Names are reused like this between drafts to the show. In the original pilot screenplay (which you can find online and will discover is even weirder than the show we got), Mark's dead wife is named Eleanor. That name wound up being used in the actual show for Devon and Ricken's baby, but I don't think it means anything lore-related. Scrapped names are just recycled elsewhere.
Yeah, I think they just stuck their hand in the writers’ room recycle bin and pulled out the first discarded name, and Hannah came up. Erin Wagoner (who wrote Attila where Helena shows up at Zufu) surely sat through endless meetings when they were breaking the S2 episodes, and ”Miss Hannah” was probably thrown around a thousand times before it became Huang.
I’m thinking they needed a name that was wrong enough to trigger Mark’s someone-said-my-loved-one’s-name-wrong sour face. We know that threshold is pretty low, I mean oMark said Helleny which is like 85% right but it still triggered iMark’s ire. But outie Mark is sincerely trying to get it right. Helena otoh doesn’t give a shit about Gemma, so if they had gone with ’Emma’ it would’ve been close but no cigar. And something way off like ’Stephanie’ is too specific to be a mistake. But ’Hannah’ is the sweet spot, just the right amount of wrong.
I think she was 14 when she was cast, and the character is literally a schoolgirl in the Kier leadership program, so I think of her as 14. It's funnier that way, to me.
The whole "why are you a child/because of when I was born" exchange cracks me up and is perfectly surreal for the Lumon landscape.
She looked younger to me too. She seemed so young I assumed she had to be somebody’s kid (like a nepo intern) but that was before I realized about the school. After that it seems like she must have been taken from there. Still very mysterious as to how students end up there though
Ms. Cobel grew up in Salts Neck and attended the Myrtle Eagan School for girls as a Wintertide Fellowship. That was high school.
Eunice Huang grew up around Kier and is being sent to the Gunnel Eagan Empathy Center in Svalbard, Norway which I take it was on Milchick’s recommendation.
She’s in junior high trying for the Wintertide Fellowship which would give her access to selective high schools. I don’t think she wanted to go to Svalbard. She was a junior crossing guard before she came to the severed floor. That’s a junior high school/middle school thing too. Reserved for eighth graders.
Plus I know many fourteen year old girls just like her. And I suspect many of them play the theremin too.
The purpose of Miss Eunice Huang was to be an antagonist for Milchick. Another slap in his face as he tries to do his job. He was given an assistant who needs assistance. And it was showing what type of qualifications Lumon thought an assistant severed floor needs to have.
I get the feeling that Svelbard was Milchick’s way of getting back at Miss Huang. Milchick is a very vindictive individual and I can see him “highly recommending” Miss Huang to the school.
The biggest enterprise there is literally a Russian coal mine. The largest town has less than 3000 people. The second largest is the Russian mining camp with around 500 people. And there’s no one else.
Miss Huang will be the youngest person there and the second youngest is Lars who’s 63 years old.
I think the character is supposed to be a child and is what we are presented. Eventually we will learn more of Lumen and the world to see how big and influential Lumen is and how weird they are that they have intern programs for children.
I suspect the world of Severence has some sort of weird dystopian thing going on, maybe a huge economic downturn that has shifted the work dynamic.
She was sixteen and her makeup and costume made her look younger. Her dress was fitted to remove any curves, giving her a preadolescent look. They filmed her in such away to make her appear shorter than she is too. I realized that when she took them to the former break room.
The only important thing to know about the character is that she foreshadows Mark becoming a dad. She's basically the child that would've been between Mark and his wife.... but since he chose Helly / Helena she exists only as a lumon employee.
1.) Chinese food place sign where he meets Helena was only half lit saying FU, which is father in Chinese.
2.) Miss Huang only exists when its up in the air whether Mark will pick Gemma or Helly. It's no coincidence that shes removed around the same time Gemma is made to disassemble the crib. For gods sake every single character asks "Why are you a child," they put extreme heavy emphasis for the audience to question this.
It's slightly infuriating when dullards incapable of thinking for themselves tell you that you're wrong, but I've learned to live with it.

Interesting to know it was Miss Hannah.
During a recent rewatch, when Helena visits oMark at Pips, she initially refers to Gemma as Hannah. oMark corrects her and says her names Gemma.
Wonder if there’s a connection?
You’ve cracked the code
Wait, what?
The code man, you've cracked it

One of the best exchanges in the show. 🤣🤣
The fact that she’s 14 and one of the most uneasy/scary characters is really funny too.
Leans into the Wintertide Fellowship/HitlerJugend vibe
That reminded me of the Portlandia exchange between Candace and Toni — “it’s so hot” “it’s the heat”
The actress is a university freshman but I thought Huang was supposed to be about 14-15.
I think we underestimate how dressing and doing someone up (hair, makeup etc) can make someone look dramatically older or younger.
It depends on when she was born.
However much time has passed since the time she was born.
I assumed she was 15
I must be the only who thought she was like 12 lol
She looked younger to me too. She seemed so young I assumed she had to be somebody’s kid (like a nepo intern) but that was before I realized about the school. After that it seems like she must have been taken from there. Still very mysterious as to how students end up there though
I definitely had her in the 13 year old category
She's always looked 11 or 12 to me more than anything.
Yeah, I think she’s young. I need to rewatch but I think that she’s connected to the academy Cobel attended.
Yeah. I think Harmony started when she was 8-12 but she was a child prodigy.
You are correct
Ms. Cobel grew up in Salts Neck and attended the Myrtle Eagan School for girls as a Wintertide Fellowship. That was high school.

Hope she has a good pair of mittens.
Yep. She's been placed at Lumon via the elite Wintertide Fellowship program for students
Character was about the age of the actress, Adam spoke about the actress being about 15 on set
Oh she is fourteen.
She’s in junior high trying for the Wintertide Fellowship which would give her access to selective high schools. I don’t think she wanted to go to Svalbard. Definitely thought the posting to Svalbard was a downgrade lol

pls tell me this is a Biscuit Krueger reference 😂
Love when my fandoms collide
She is in college now. It took so long to finish season 2. She is an adult in present day.
Funny how that happens.

breh i thought she was 8
6, maybe 7.

I literally was like, omg is she Gemma's daughter? fertility treatment at Lumon???
Surprised there’s no theories on her being some sort of vessel inhabiting a kier or something
There was a ridiculous theory that she was an android who arrived in the crate you can see in the background of Milchick's new office!

Helena was just making a reference to Britt Lower's husband
can’t spell severance without an S and an A
