Hi 👋

I very sadly had to cut my Alocasia leaves off last week because of mealybugs that weren't going and this was my last attempt to save the plant.

Once cut I put it in LECA with rooting mix and covered it. So treated it as a new corm. This was a week ago.

It had healthish roots but have died since. Which I'm not too surprised by. It was in leca before, but by a wick

Guess I'm asking, did I cut this wrong? Should it be lower or is it just a lost cause? And just any tips or advice ☺️

It is a tiny dancer

  • Not me scrolling by thinking "oooooh that looks like a tasty pastry, wonder what kind it is! 👀" then seeing the reddit and title 🤣

I thought it was a burrito with cheese very uniformly baked on top 😭

hahah I can definitely see it - not encouraging 🫠

Yes!! With a delicious chocolate drizzle!

Yesssss like a croissant/eclair hybrid almost! 😆 (apparently I'm still hungry lmao)

Yes, I thought it was a deformed chocolate croissant.

  • I have never saved a stump like this. They seem to rot no matter what.

Ah okay thank you. I'll still try but be prepared for it not going well

  • I have one that’s in pretty much the same state, but I straight up put it in water. Thought I should grow it some roots back before putting it in leca/pon. Assuming it’s not just dead. Was that unwise? Should I be giving it more air?

    Edit: water with fertilizer

I'm not sure if mine is the right way or not sadly. But I'll let you know if I see any signs of life! I just thought I'd treat it like a corm so covered to give it humidity and will air it once a week

I hope it does well! What do you mean by “rooting mix”?

  • I've had success with these! Just keep an eye on any rot, eventually it will push out new roots and new growth points. Revived my very sickly polly this way. The humidity really helped and I did my best to just neglect it!

Ahh yay okay your the first person to give me a smidge of hope 😅 I'll keep at it! Would you say the way I have it set up is right?

Looks right to me! With the plastic wrap over it, it should help act as a humidity dome so you shouldn't have to water it as often as you would regularly. The clear pot also will help you keep an eye out for root growth.

Losing the initial roots may just be the transfer from whatever medium you had before to hydro. As long as the rhyzome isn't squishy, there's stuff to save!

Not sure if you've had success with sprouting corms, but it works essentially in the same way from my experience. (Edited: looks like in your original post you may have!)

You could even chop it up more for multiple propogations but I'd recommend just just keeping the rhyzome as is for now to see how it fares the next few weeks. Mine would mold a little naturally, but as long as it isn't turnung soft and mushy, you should be fine. A little hydrogen peroxide/water diluted spray can get rid of the mold.
