Insane stuff man. I'm sad sandman is over but also happy that tom doesn't have to endure this anymore. There is nooo way you could pull off a regime like this for a long period of time.
He was working with a trainer who wouldn’t have let that happen. He was probably eating nothing but chicken breasts and roughage, but they would’ve kept him at a state maintaining his muscle.
there is no way to get a physique like this without a severe calorie deficit over a long period of time.
at first, yes, people can gain muscle even in a severe calorie deficit. this phase won't last long though. i don't think tom could have gained any more muscles than he did there. this is why body builders have bulk phases. they eat insane amount of calories because otherwise they physically couldn't gain more muscles.
if there is not enough energy available in form of fat, the body reacts by eating up muscle mass after a while. muscles burn energy constantly, so it makes sense for the body to reduce them. less muscle means less energy required to survive. unfortunately, this also affects the heart.
some anorexic people, even if they start to gain weight, still die because of this. the heart can't recover.
I mean it's more a matter of biochemistry, but that's not the point. The point is that with monitoring and constant adjustments, this goes from 'severely unhealthy, health risk' to 'uncomfy few months of training'.
It's really silly to say we shouldn't "discuss straight up facts" when you're ignoring the FACT that he had a literal professional trainer and nutritionist with him every day during this to ensure those problematic things WEREN'T happening.
Also, unless gross negligence happened, he was in little to no risk of cardiac concerns bc AN typically causes short term heart problems primarily from electrolyte deficiency related arrhythmia. Particularly from bradycardia.
Wanna know what WASN'T happening with 3hr daily training? Bradycardia. Yeah.
So in case you wanna know 'how the human body works' and not just try to sound argumentative and fake smart, there's a really cool thing called Google right there on your phone.
Stop being snarky and pedantic when you don't know what you're talking about.
That's a different conversation we're having now. In reference to your original comment, no, it isn't likely super healthy for him. But you insinuate the cardiac concerns you did, and blanket the situation with his 'body eating his heart muscle' (paraphrasing) without contextualizing that it's the 2020's and he had elite tier professional support is just silly.
I'm not gonna waste my time doing the due diligence you could've done to show you why your statements are rubbish.
I'll be honest, I was just triggered with someone being pedantic while saying it's "literally a matter of physics" while referring to metabolism, nutrition, and biochemical science. 🤷🏻 And doing so poorly.
Those thighs (and derrière) scare me every time. It’s insane that Tom did that to himself.
I remember him saying that he’d done all the work to get to that weight and then Covid lockdown hit so they had to stop filming (or couldn’t start filming - one of the two). They had a months-long break and he had to go through it all again to reduce his weight. Seems nightmarish! Talk about suffering for your art.
And sad that it could’ve turned into so much more (knowing Netflix I figured it wouldn’t last a season or two). It was a great show and is still a great story. Most actors were cast so well. Not what I envisioned Sandman on the screen but still enjoyable.
I'd have to dig up the quote, but basically they only planned for two seasons because they knew Netflix was pretty flaky about that. It doesn't feel that way because season 2 felt rushed, but that's what the TV show ecosystem is like nowadays.
I think his trainer shared he maintained single digit body fat for a year to film season 2, as well. Absolutely insane commitment. He looked fantastic though
Besides that his chest looks skinny, where you really see it is in the thigh size in comparison to the calves. Because your calves are usually for the most part, skinnier than your thighs. If they are bigger.. or look wider.. similar to the second part of the arm after the elbow for a woman.... that means you are incredibly underweight.
It is impressive that he did that effort, similar to Christian Bale and his weightloss. Though Tom had muscle training which helped reduce cardiac risk. Because loosing a lot of weight fast... reduces cardiac muscle.

Damn. This was not healthy at all. He was severely underweight.
After a while the body starts to eat up muscle mass, uncluding the heart muscle. Not good.
But his looks were perfect for this role at least.
This is a post from his trainer đź‘€

But damn, he was committed to his role.
Yeah but it was only for the first episode, when he was naked! After that, he looks normal
fuckin woof

no, it doesn't work that way.

Maybe for you there's no way but you're not him.
Dude, it's literally a matter of physics. There is no need to discuss straight up facts.
How do you think the human body works?

There is no way to make this healthy. But hey, if you have any sources, enlighten me.

It’s worse even — they kept having to stop and start again, so he had to just maintain it for months.
Tom went through LENGTHS for this role. It just shows how dedicated to the role he was

Despite how often Netflix does cancel great shows, I think Sandmans cancellation is more due to Gaiman and not Netlfix
It was cancelled/ended prior to Gaiman as the first public photos of S2 were the kindly ones. Gaiman basically sealed the deal
That's upsetting :/ I wonder if they never planned more than two
I'd have to dig up the quote, but basically they only planned for two seasons because they knew Netflix was pretty flaky about that. It doesn't feel that way because season 2 felt rushed, but that's what the TV show ecosystem is like nowadays.
If I remember correctly, they asked him if it was CGI and he felt somewhat offended.
I thought it was partially CGI too but then I saw behind the scene photos…….
I think his trainer shared he maintained single digit body fat for a year to film season 2, as well. Absolutely insane commitment. He looked fantastic though
He looks....otherworldly

Tom really did everything for Sandman. So unfortunate that he can't do it anymore ughhhh
The anamorphic lens (squished in the center, stretched on the sides) makes this look worse, but he did look pretty skinny.
The part that worries me is his thighs, they are smaller than his calves, that's a dangerous level of cut
Happy to go to his rest and pass the batton.
Lets see whats next for Tom
