I make low 20s an hour to fight fire in California to save million dollar houses. I get paid horribly but at least I love my job. Worked 500 hours of overtime this season. Our season was 8 months.
It’s not and it shouldn’t be. It’s an imperfect world but masks will cause their own issues. Smoke inhalation is a long term chronic issue, masks will be an immediate acute problems causing heat exhaustion/ stroke. I will venture to say masks would make most crews completely useless.
They aren’t. People like OP are taking this job in the hopes of getting one of the good paying full time positions. Many of the wildfire fighters in CA are ex felons or others with records or past employment issues.
Not saying OP is but it’s in a sense an apprenticeship before going to one of the big city stations where you make 100k plus easily.
Its probably because wildland firefighters are seasonal so he made all that money in less than a year. If that's all the money he made for the year he will get most of that 21k back.
I know people who all they do is send 3-4 emails a day to other people about why they are not the correct person to email about that subject and they make 150K a year.
Wrong target. Finance and tech guys are not protected by regulations or unions or guilds, and they compete against offshoring and outsourcing. They get high pay because of pure market force.
Loving your job is rare. I have consistently sought out function and fulfillment versus high pay as well. Definitely makes me hurt a little to see the other bank people are making but such is life. Appreciate your hard work and most likely positive net addition to the world.
I'm shocked. With the salaries in this sub I thought I am missing a zero there. Honestly I feel bad, the pay structure in this state is distorted and corrupt, plenty of people make so much more due to regulations distortion and protection, and we have this guy here getting underpaid for his sacrifices.
I love how the state takes half your income and then wonders how it can help struggling Americans. Just let us keep more of our own money, that would do it
panda express workers start at about 23/hour in my city... firefighters are massively underpaid wow
It’s rough, the wildland guys like me don’t even get masks
I was wondering why your pay was so low, I know a firefighter in CA and he clears $300k a year but he's an overtime whore.
Op is not a structure firefighter, he’s a seasonal wild-LAND FF most likely
I thought nowadays it’s required to put masks on. Dude you are risking your life.

This might not even be a full time schedule.
What city? What's the average range?
wtf, I thought yall made 6 figures here in CA
There’s different organizations.
For example, LAFD is a lot different than CalFire.
53k and 21k of it is taken away for tax and deductions. Damn you gotta move out of Cali my friend.
That's where the fires are

Dude you genuinely deserve a raise. If I ever get in a position of power I’ll make it my first priority to help people like you

Meanwhile some finance tech nerd explaining why he deserves 1.7 million watching you save his multi million dollar mcmansion.

That's a shitty income. Ya'll deserve 5x that
California sucks balls
california pays super well just not wildland.
Wow, you deserve at least a 50% pay increase and a life insurance policy on top. God bless you for all that you do 🙏
What app do you use for this?
A grown man earning a child’s wages
Then you know there a lot of child wages out here in California. Minimum wage in California needs to be set at 100,000.
You could try earning more money instead of forcing the government to make companies give you more
Tell that to all the unions.
And them taxes are gonna end up in Israel or some random group in the Middle East
Yeah it’s sad

This is jarring compared to the candle salespeople or whatever that make $400,000 after taxes and post it here.

You sir do not get paid nearly enough for that
I love how the state takes half your income and then wonders how it can help struggling Americans. Just let us keep more of our own money, that would do it
OP is probably on a type II forest service crew working limited if any overtime
