Yeah, 250k total compensation isn't that unusual for a SWE in NYC
Lmao. You people live in a world of delusion. I wonder how many people read this sub, graduate, and realize real life isnt like its portrayed by the unemployed on reddit.
Good school, Frick ton of projects, and good luck. Give percentages please.
Edit: also if you can give industry but if not is fine king I just want your salary.
My job is semi-commissions (Construction Staffing) based but I we've had such a downturn year I'm just glad to have a job and a raise instead of being laid off
Yeah makes sense since this is a bragging sub, though I feel like including signing is highly misleading. In this case would obfuscate the entire industry of the role…
Yeah that’s def not the norm haha. Those are like the top of the top quant shops. I have friends at two sigma and it’s actually not higher pay than a Google or a meta.
If you’re good enough for a Jane street you can probably make more at an anthropic.
What type of work do you do? Also, why is the bonus so high? I’ve never seen it where the bonus matches this match unless you’re in maybe Fintech and high frequency trading.
But I thought also the starting salaries would be much higher for those in the industry
All Python. Biggest skills are being super responsive, being able to communicate well, and dealing with lots of different tasks at once. Technically it’s not the most difficult.
Any chance you could give some guidance on similar companies to yours ? I am currently job hunting and have been doing python development for the past 5 years, but feel like I have been shooting for the wrong places.
Cast a wide net, have interesting personal projects (things that solve real issues, not templates that have been done 1000 times), network with people at the companies
With that kind of bonus ik it’s finance company and you are possibly a quant swe or work in or close to trading
Yeah, 250k total compensation isn't that unusual for a SWE in NYC but 100k bonus with no RSUs seems to indicate it's not a tech company.
Lmao. You people live in a world of delusion. I wonder how many people read this sub, graduate, and realize real life isnt like its portrayed by the unemployed on reddit.
I didn't say it's average. Most SWEs in NYC are not making that much.
OP said HFT in another reply
Hf not hft
Which one I’m also an engineer at a financial company IB in nyc when you say hedge fund i assume citadel
Not gonna say but not citadel
citadel pays more than 250 total
Ah gotcha mb
my pay and education is similar and it’s not finance
we are in manufacturing
Okay but have you only been working for 1 year
Is your company hiring Mechanical Engineers?
i have no idea. company is massive
You work for a massive manufacturing company that starts its software engineers at 150k plus 100k bonus huh?
What kind of schooling do you have under your belt?
95% of CS guys will never make 175k base with a 150-200k bonus.
You just see a massively disproportionate of them on Reddit.
I’m sure 100% of CS guys can make 100k within 5-10yrs if they want to and move to at least a MCOL area.
Bachelors in Computer Science
Good school, Frick ton of projects, and good luck. Give percentages please. Edit: also if you can give industry but if not is fine king I just want your salary.
Bonus almost rivaling the salary is crazy work
pretty normal for bonus to exceed salary around mid level
that gets more aggressive higher you are
my CEO’s salary is like $500k but bonus is around $20 million
I'm in the wrong industry if the best I can get is a buffet voucher and a pizza party
i’m in manufacturing/construction industry but i imagine it’s the same for most other Fortune 500s regardless of industry
My job is semi-commissions (Construction Staffing) based but I we've had such a downturn year I'm just glad to have a job and a raise instead of being laid off
I usually see bonuses in tech hover around 10% of base
tech role or tech industry?
im in a tech role but my industry is non tech
Both, im talking about swe roles in big tech companies. My annual bonus is 10%
Pretty normal on the street. The average bonus was 250k for 2024 if I remember correctly.
By street what do you mean
Financial world ( Wall Street). OP says he works in a hedge fund
Is this finance? Never seen such a combo
Tons of swes work at banks, fintech, IB, and quant places
Would have to be quant or similar. Back of office finance doesn’t pay similar model to front office, not to mention base is way too high.
I was going to say 250 TC seems low for quant. But 1 yoe makes more sense
This would be a slap in the face to a quant in NYC lmao
Not really most places don’t actually pay a ton for swe at a quant shop. It’s just a top few that do
I think those in CS (myself included) have skewed quant pay to Two Sigma, Citadel, Jane Street equivalents 😅
Lots of TC posts you see also include the sign on in the number
Yeah makes sense since this is a bragging sub, though I feel like including signing is highly misleading. In this case would obfuscate the entire industry of the role…

No other SWE role is regularly giving bonuses that high in cash
Yeah HF
See i like a quant swe
The title says software engineer…
Yes dummy I meant swe in finance.
Did you have any internships prior to getting your job?
Interned at the company + another investment firm
What type of work do you do? Also, why is the bonus so high? I’ve never seen it where the bonus matches this match unless you’re in maybe Fintech and high frequency trading.
But I thought also the starting salaries would be much higher for those in the industry
Comp for those industries is almost always variable with a high bonus and lower base. Good in boom years, bad in bust years.
Bonus tax rate is like 40%?
Non federal withholdings are done like I make that every paycheck, will be fixed come tax return time
100k bonus... geez.
What programming languages, frameworks and skills are used here ? Would love to score a job like that lol
All Python. Biggest skills are being super responsive, being able to communicate well, and dealing with lots of different tasks at once. Technically it’s not the most difficult.

Thank you ! That is useful, did you have any cool projects that solved real issues to showcase ? Could give an example of one if you did ?
I ran a business that generated 100k+ in revenue in under 4 months of starting, so I was able to talk about that and the coding projects I made for it
Amazing !! Very inspiring
What is work life balance like and are you guys hiring? Also NYC local 6 YoE in Data
8am - 7:15ish not hiring
Well shit bro you sure earn that money, Bravo man
Do you get a sign on last year?
Yes
Curious to know what it was. Those are great base and bonus for y1
Bro how?
How many hours do you work?
8-7:15 ish
The HCOL advantage carrying a lot of weight
