Thanks everyone who commented on the previous post, I wanted to keep the screen stock as much as the new IPS is likely the objectively best choice; in case you hadn't seen, the polarizer was completely burnt and made using the internal screen a no-go.

I bought some cheap polarising film sheets and a bottle of isopropanol. Honestly the process sucks, the screen is fixed to the main motherboard so it's awkwardly attached the whole time that you're carefully trying to take the shielding off the screen assembly, from the you can pop it out and get to work. I kept dabbing some IPA between the polarizer and digitizer(?) and using a razor to get the damaged polarizer off. From there it's a long process of trying to make the polarizer as adhesive-free as possible; mine was pretty bad and I had to do this for the front and back polarizer. You can cut a new piece of film to size and get that attached to the back of the screen, reassemble and power the console on with a game. Then you can test which orientation you want the polarizer to be for a correct image, if you're doing this take more time and care than I did, mine now seems to have a slightly red hue but I can live with that.

Absolutely worth it to me, I love the Mega Drive and having one that I can use on the go (when I can figure a battery solution out) is an absolute treat!

  • I could never live with that, the screen looks horrendous. I used to have a Nomad and it never looked that bad.

Honestly the images do make it look really bad, I can guarantee it really doesn't look that bad to my eyes. I can always try and get an image that more matches what I'm seeing though I was more just showing that the burnt polarizer has been replaced.

Please, maybe a short movie as now it looks like its overexposed.

  • Great job! I think it’s really cool you repaired the original screen. I have 3 Nomads. One is completely stock with a good original screen. I installed a Hispeedido IPS screen in the other two. The updated screens are WAY better than the original screen. My stock Nomad screen looks good overall but it does suffer from ghosting.

For a battery solution, I highly recommend the Nomad Pak from LaserBear. You will need to purchase batteries separately. I have the Nomad Pak with USB-C & DC input and Nitecore lithium batteries. The battery life is amazing!!

Cheers! I'll take a look into that battery pack, though it seems like I'm about to be in between jobs so maybe a side project for another time but this thing will some day be untethered to a wall :)

  • Not even really worth messing with the OEM screen these days. They're all bad and ancient. The LCDDEV is the way to go

I know but I really wanted to keep it OEM if it was possible, it isn't the best job by any means at all but fact is that it's mine and it wasn't working before, now it is and I'm happy with it. Better then it being sat in someone's 'collection' never to be used.
