In recent months we have gone from a smattering of posts by me, your mod, to a large smattering of posts by a lot of you. And that's great. However, there is a lot of variance in how these reviews are being captured.

I am not yet changing the rules, but I am considering it. Some of the posts have been the reviews, but many have been screen shots of reviews, often with resulting small images. Whenever possible, save the image itself to post. If you want to also grab a screen shot for proof, that would be great. Or link to the review, or item, or reviewer, or similarly give clues as to how to find these ourselves.

And why am I asking this? Let's consider the case of review by Amazon user ES for TWBQND Sexy Mini Dress for Women Deep V Patent Leather Hipster Dress Punk Backless Nightdress Rave Party Club Bar Honeymoon. (Gotta love those titles...) I use this one specifically because someone posted here about her reviews and included some screen shots.

A phone screen shot of ES's reviews will have tiny thumbnails like this:

Clicking through to ES's review of the dress will show more thumbnails and some text:

Specific review on phone

Clicking on a photo in that review will give a "full" photo, but the photo itself cannot be saved and screenshots will have limited resolution.

However, if you open the same review in a non-mobile browser

Review in browser

...then you can right-click that same photo and select Open in New Tab. That gives you the full-sized image to save and share.

Full image

This is much better than the smaller screenshots.

Also, I recommend Open in New Tab rather than Save Image As... because you can often get an even larger sized image. This particular image that didn't work on, because it is only 1200x1109. However, many Amazon review images are much larger, but the image you would open in a new tab (or save) is size limited. When you open it, look for and delete ._SL1600_ from the address; it will come right before the .jpg. That will give you a full-sized image.

delete this

I have info on how to do all this for Etsy and several other sites if requested. I'm even working on a Javascript bookmark to click to give full sized images for dozen of sites. I'll drop that in a comment when I complete it.

  • What’s the point of it being retail reviews if you don’t show the review portion? Otherwise it could just be any random picture from Reddit or elsewhere? I feel like the kink here is showing it’s posted somewhere as a review… just my 2 cents

I’m not at all opposed to demonstrating that it is a review, whether through additional screen shots or (like I do) actual links to the reviews.

But what I don’t want is having functionally just thumbnails of the photo reviews, not sharing the higher res photos, and no links to find them. And I’ve seen that happen and that’s why I posted this.
