Hi everyone,
I’m a Canadian PGY-1 Family Medicine resident. I postponed the start of my residency by 7 months due to maternity leave. To be honest, I really struggled to study during that time, and now that my residency start date is approaching, I feel like I’ve forgotten everything.
I’m starting in 4 weeks. My baby will start daycare in about 10 days, which should give me a bit of time to prepare, but I feel overwhelmed and underprepared.
Do you have any advice on how to best get ready in this short time and how to start residency without looking completely incompetent?
Any tips, resources, or reassurance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you 🙏
Damn 7 months that's awesome, is this Canada or US? Congrats on both the kiddo and on your return.
I don't have any real advice for prepping content (it will likely just require getting thrown in there and things will come back to you faster than you think), but I think it will help to remember that you are not the first person to be returning after maternity leave, LOA, FMLA etc...they are not expecting you to be at the exact level as your peers at this stage. As long as you show the same appropriate growth over the next 6 months that they did in their first 6 months, that means you are on-level. Make good connections with your coresidents and let them know you appreciate their guidance and feedback, and then follow through with that. People will help you out when you take feedback well and have a good attitude.
Also, let someone at the daycare know you'd appreciate photos or other updates to help you feel connected during this transition. I see a lot of new mommies on this thread struggling more with the emotional component of leaving kiddo for long hours vs. the actual job itself. Good luck!
