LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - The man accused of a crime spree that led to a police shooting was out of custody on probation, conditional discharge, and on his own recognizance on three prior criminal cases during the events that unfolded Thursday night into Friday morning.

Winthrop Taylor, 36 of Louisville, is accused of a string of robberies and car thefts that began late Thursday night and ended in a police foot chase at an apartment complex.

Taylor allegedly stole multiple vehicles at gunpoint over the course of a few hours. One of those incidents led to a confrontation with LMPD police officers conducting an unrelated traffic stop on Bardstown Road, at which time Taylor opened fire on his alleged victim and the officers. One of the officers shot, as well. The victim was hurt, but it is unclear whose bullets hit him.

Taylor’s arrest did not occur until later Friday morning, after another alleged carjacking led police to an apartment complex, where Taylor had attempted to hide out in a crawl space.

WAVE Troubleshooters learned his history in the Jefferson County court system is not contained to the week’s events. Court records show a recent history, so much so that he was out on active supervised probation, conditional discharge and his own recognizance in three separate cases.

In October, Taylor was arrested for allegedly driving a stolen car. He was released on his own recognizance and ordered to make all court appearances and commit no new crimes.

However, Taylor was already out of jail on a conditional discharge at the time of that arrest. He was sentenced in March 2025 to 275-days in jail, which was conditionally discharged for two years on a prior felony charge that was amended down to a misdemeanor. That case stemmed from a domestic incident. His revocation hearing in this case for the new, October felony arrest was set for Jan. 9, 2026, so it had not been held at the time of the new, alleged crime spree.

However, court records also show that Taylor was also on an active, two-year supervised probation for a felony pleaded down to a misdemeanor conviction from September 2024.

In that case, officers said he was swerving down West Chestnut Street, veering into oncoming traffic. When officers tried to stop him, he took off at a high speed. Police stopped the pursuit because it became too much of a risk to the public.

A few minutes later, a collision happened nearby.

Officers found Taylor once again trying to flee. He was arrested by police, who said he smelled strongly of alcohol, had watery, bloodshot eyes and extremely slurred speech. He ultimately pleaded guilty to four charges, had his jail time suspended and began supervised probation.

To date, a probation revocation hearing has not been set in that case for any charges after March 10.

Taylor is currently behind bars on a $150,000 bond. He submitted a not guilty plea Saturday to the 20 new charges against him.

His next court appearance is set for Dec. 29. A revocation hearing for his March 2025 conviction is set for Jan. 9, 2026.

Editor’s note: This story has been corrected. The prior version said Taylor was out of custody on three felony convictions. One felony case against Taylor is still pending. Two other felony cases were pleaded down to misdemeanors.
