Now with more experience from JC and the Team and Not letting that one Tournament Match Happen again. Could get nice, could become Ubisoft Microtransaction hell with Steel being useless and new heros only unlocking for Money. Give another Publisher the rights for For Honor 2 in hindsight

    parent root
    7 points Infamous-Ad-3078

    What's the tournament match?

    parent root
    21 points BufforNerfCentPlz

It was just a really bad tournament. It was right when the game first came out. Being a tournament people were playing optimally, and doing that meant abusing some of the most goofy techs ever seen in a video game. People were unlock zoning and sprint attacking in duels. Which should not be happening, and it looked ridiculous.

    parent root
    12 points TheDekuDude888

Shugoki had the unavoidable backbreaker and everything it was the worst era of For Honor and killed any hopes of a tournament scene 😂

    parent root
    9 points Lord_Ragnok

I remember not that long ago, I saw a post about how someone wouldn’t play games that require kernel level access for anti-cheat. Most of the replies told them it’s not an issue and that they would never need to worry about hackers gaining access.

As someone who doesn’t play things that want kernel level access on my PC, it’s interesting to see the two events so close together. I hope the source code being compromised is incorrect, but it seems Ubisoft is playing it smart at the moment.

    parent root
  • 88 points Infinite-Director-62

Yet the hackers can’t do this for all the real shit crap that exists lol all those anonymous threats fall flat after all that talk.

Ubisoft is going to do some fine combing to their system to catch all the abusers of the hacks which unfortunately will only be the players and not the hackers

    parent
    26 points Select-Source2445

I mean the messages they were giving out in the ban waves in my opinion were probably targeting the Epstein files which we only got 2 gigabytes out of 200 of it .I’m sure they did it for other reasons but to get people to open their eyes more.

    parent root
    34 points BiologicDeath

Someone really cares, they'll get justice by hacking Rainbow, yeah

    parent root
    29 points NotaBuster5300

It's because digital Robin Hood's straight up don't happen. At least, not when it comes to the government.

The govt. snaps up as many skilled hackers as it can because they know they're dangerous. Hackers willingly get employed by the govt. because it's a better gig than being a cybercriminal and unless you got a strong as hell moral and ethical compass it's hard to reject a fat stack of cash on ideological grounds. In short, it makes the govt. well suited to defending against hackers and the govts. power, especially in recent years, makes it way more dangerous to hack them than some company.

    parent root
    4 points Select-Source2445

Yeah dk why they did it for real. Like last time with Sony and the interview movie. No true reason on this one. But the files is what I got from it MJ lyrics, Israel, “what else are they hiding from us”.

    parent
    182 points ghosttnappa

The Result: Using these stolen credentials, they bypassed the firewall and logged directly into Ubisoft’s internal Git repositories as if they were senior developers, allowing them to download terabytes of source code undetected.

not at all how this works

    parent root
    60 points ElegantNut

What do you mean? Sure, "bypass the firewall" is textbook non-technical person lingo, but why could they not log to a VPN with stolen credentials that allows them access to all Git repos?

    parent root
    55 points Triffinator

But they did so without putting the hard-line into the mainframe.

    That takes skill.

    parent root
    26 points sername_generic

That would fry the motherboard and take down the entire system - maybe more!

    parent root
    3 points area88guy

They didn't even try to hack the Gibson!

    parent root
    51 points Orio_n

Why? You can host git repos internally over ssh. That's probably what they meant

    parent root
    9 points JangoDarkSaber

If I were to guess, it’s most likely they used stolen vpn credentials to gain access.

    parent root
    39 points Kobidios

What you mean? I always bypass the firewall when hacking… /s

I think they mean a form of WAF maybe?

    parent

    parent
  • 2 points Cisqoe

Someone ELI5 why source code specifically is so important

    parent
    12 points blinkertyblink

Source code can tell someone everything about the game, for Ubisoft it probably is more an IP/Copyright thing as now people can see how their systems run

For players the likely scenario is better made/ undetectable hacks

For anything unreleased well, now its in the wild

    parent root
    5 points SparklingLimeade

If a game is a house then the source code isn't just a copy of the house like we all get, it's the blueprints.

If you want to mod a game (renovate the house) then it might involve some trial and error to find the part you're looking for. Can this wall be removed? Where are the structural components? Where's the wiring and plumbing? With the blueprints you can see all those things exactly instead of hunting them down by making guesses and breaking things to look for the bits you need.

This is why open source software is a category some people care about. For consumers it's often not noticeable but for some people the source code is extremely useful.

    parent root
    5 points Hxtrax

It makes it way easier to develop cheats for a game that you don't have to reverse engineer, but rather have the source code for it.

    parent root
  • 3 points SykoJr5135

The title might as well be "I had no idea that hackers were doing something that literally all hackers try to do" like wdym "I had no idea they were stealing source code" why the fuck else would they hack something this deeply? Just to fuck around? No they want the source code so they can make cheats that get around the anticheat system better

Cheat dev, it’s easier to understand what’s happening by reading the source code than taking apart the rainbowsix.exe that Ubisoft has intentionally put in (and I’ll add they’ve done a half decent job too) a bunch of effort into making harder

Plus the way battleye works this could also be some of the custom detections that’s been working against the major cheats that Ubis been doing a half decent job at keeping down

Edit: if it’s even true. The reporting around this is that they didn’t get the source code
