I appreciate you asking, curiosity doesn’t come off as rude at all! The other commenter had it exactly right. There are Jewish laws, and this collection of laws are all mitzvot (plural for mitzvah). With that in mind though, you’ll hear, “live by the rules, not die by them,” because life matters above all else.
Example: one of my favorite mitzvot is that you feed your animals before you feed yourself. There have been days where I am feeling dizzy and have low blood sugar though, and in order to keep myself healthy, I would sit to have a snack before I feed my pets.

When my boys were still alive my mom sewed their names on tiny stockings that we hung up. It makes me miss them even more because it's the first Christmas without their stockings up.

Mitzvot are just rules/laws a Jew is expected to adhere to or fulfill to the best of their ability.
But above every single law you are expected to care for yourself first and foremost
